Chapter 57: ~Intermission~ Buying Condoms
The cold night air stung their skin as Scott and Emma walked through the quiet streets of Meteor City. Their breaths puffed out in little white clouds before fading away. Both of them had their hands buried deep in their pockets, trying to fight off the biting chill, though it didn’t seem to help much.
“Man…”
Emma hunched her shoulders.
“Yunno, I really wish I’d grabbed a coat or something. This is brutal.”
Scott nodded as his lips twitched into a faint smirk.
“Yeah. Feels like the city’s trying to freeze us solid.”
Emma blew into her hands and rubbed them together briefly before tucking them back into her pockets.
“Wouldn’t be surprised if it succeeded. Meteor City’s like that—hostile, dangerous, unforgiving… basically a real-life boss fight.”
Scott let out a quiet chuckle but didn’t answer right away.
His eyes drifted over the dark streets, where dim neon signs from old, run-down shops flickered.
He turned his head slightly to look at Emma.
“So… no superheroes stationed here, huh?”
Emma shook her head. “Nope. Not really.”
“None at all?”
“Well, I mean…”
She tilted her head to think.
“There’s a few who claim to protect this place. Rope Girl, Deathmark, Black Dragon, and a couple of others.”
Scott raised a brow.
“Uhh… Deathmark? Black Dragon? Those sound more like supervillain names than anything.”
Emma burst out laughing.
“Right? It’s like Meteor City only attracts edgy try-hards and people with questionable branding choices. But hey, it fits the vibe.”
Scott folded his arms and let out a small sigh.
“Why’s that? I mean, why are all the heroes here so… you know, that type?”
Emma shrugged.
“Because the softer, goody-two-shoes heroes wouldn’t last a week in this hellhole. You need people who can handle the grit. The Agency’s sent plenty of heroes here over the years, but most of them either died, got messed up so bad they had to retire, or just bailed the first chance they got.”
Scott’s lips tightened into a thin line as he exhaled another frosty breath.
“So it’s that dangerous, huh?”
Emma nodded solemnly.
“Yup. Meteor City isn’t your average urban nightmare. It chews people up and spits them out, and that’s before you factor in the crime and villain population.”
Scott didn’t respond right away.

He let the silence stretch between them as he stared at the cracked pavement underfoot.
『Maybe staying here a little longer wouldn’t be such a bad idea. It’d give Tess some breathing room, and I’m pretty sure she’s still pissed at me. But damn, it’d screw with my school stuff. Then again…』
He barely noticed Emma slowing her pace and turning to point her thumb at a nearby convenience store.
Her voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Hey… let’s stop by there and grab some condoms.”
Scott’s eyelids fumbled to stay open.
“…Seriously?”
It caught him completely off guard.
Emma shrugged nonchalantly.
“What? No matter how good sex is without a condom, we gotta be responsible, babe. You don’t want me getting pregnant, right? Imagine trying to juggle heroing with a screaming baby. Talk about career-ending injuries.”
Scott sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
“I wasn’t talking about—about that! Geez, Emma!”
“Oh… so what were we talking about again?”
Emma tilted her head innocently.
Scott groaned and ran a hand down his face before stomping toward the store.
“It’s just weird, okay? We were talking about Meteor City, and now suddenly we’re… ugh, forget it.”
Emma followed after him and patted his back gently.
“Hey, the current state of this city isn’t gonna screw me good tonight, so priorities.”
Scott sighed deeply and muttered to himself as they stepped into the convenience store.
The door gave a soft jingle which caught the attention of the bored-looking clerk behind the counter.
He barely looked up as he mumbled a lazy greeting.
“Welcome…”
Immediately after, he returned to his phone, where the faint sound of the most recent Nightwatch stream played quietly.
Scott leaned against the counter, arms folded, as Emma wandered toward the back of the store. She stopped in front of the rack of condom packs and her eyes quickly scanned the rows thoughtfully.
“Hrmm…”
She hummed while tapping her chin.
“What’s the best kind? I’ve never actually bought these before. So, it’s kinda…”
Scott shifted uncomfortably at the counter as he avoided the clerk’s curious glance.
“Babe, can you not announce that to the entire store?”
Emma ignored him and pulled out her phone.
“Maybe I should call Jenna for advice. She’s the expert on this kinda stuff—”
“Don’t even try it!” Scott hissed.
Emma smiled impishly but put the phone away.
Her eyes landed on a brightly colored box, and almost immediately her face lit up.
She snatched it off the shelf with an exaggerated flourish.
“Aha! This one looks perfect! You don’t need to be an expert to know this is the winner.”
She practically skipped back to the counter and waved the box triumphantly in front of Scott’s face.
He groaned and buried his head in his hands.
“Just… pay for it and let’s go.”
“Alright, alright.”
Emma walked up to the counter with a soft smile and tossed the condom pack onto the scratched countertop.
“This, please~”
Her voice was so light and enticing voice.
The store assistant was a tall, skinny guy with messy hair and a very tired look on his face.
At first, he barely looked up from his phone.
When he finally did, his eyes landed on the box.
“Oh… alright~” he mumbled as he reached for it.
As he picked it up, his eyes lingered on the packaging, and his brows furrowed slightly.
Then, as realization hit, his eyes widened.
“Whoa… you’re really going for Vixen Shield condoms?”
Emma tilted her head, then blinked in confusion.
“Uh… yeah? Why? Are they bad or something?”
The assistant quickly shook his head, looking almost offended at the suggestion.
“No way! These are top-tier. Like, the best you can get. Premium stuff. Ultra-thin, super durable, and they’ve got this… uh… special ‘enhanced sensation’ tech or something. I think it was an ultra-sensitive gel formula or so. They’re practically legendary.”
Scott was leaning against the counter with his arms crossed when he raised an eyebrow. He reached out, grabbed the box, and started looking it over.
“Vixen Shield, huh…”
He turned it over in his hands.
After a moment, his lips quirked into a dry smirk.
“Man, that Foxgirl sure was getting busy.”
Truly, she was.
The product’s slogan was:
“Fierce Protection, Wild Satisfaction.”
The centerpiece of the front cover featured an image of a sultry fox girl in a very seductive pose. Her fox ears were perked, and her fluffy tail was strategically wrapped around her curvaceous body, providing tasteful attraction. She held a sleek, foil-wrapped condom card between her teeth. Her superhero outfit was partially torn, revealing even more of her smooth, flawless skin.
The back cover mostly showcased detailed illustrations of the condom’s texture and benefits.
A [Fox Tip] read:
“Whether you’re saving the day or heating up the night, always stay protected.”
Scott tossed the box back on the counter and sighed.
“These heroes are crazy…”
That was all he could say.
Emma folded her arms and nodded like she was serious.
“Yup. If Foxgirl’s gonna partner with a condom company, you know it’s gotta be the best one out there. Branding’s everything, babe.”
The store assistant looked at Emma as his bored expression changed the longer he watched her.
She was stunning… her curves, hourglass figure, and natural beauty were impossible to ignore.
There was something about the way she moved, so self-assured, and the way she spoke that screamed independence. For a moment, he looked confused, like he was trying to solve a puzzle about her.
『Weird… women this stunning are usually actresses or… I dunno, influencers with a million followers. What’s someone like her doing in a dump like this?』
His eyes drifted to the side, where a copy of Hero Weekly lay on a magazine rack. The glossy cover featured Miss Mercury in her signature pose, all radiant energy and charisma.
His eyes darted back to Emma.
『Wait a second…』
Emma stiffened slightly when she noticed the subtle change in his expression.
Her lips twitched into a forced smile.
『Oh no. He’s probably a huge Miss Mercury fan. I know exactly where this is going.』
She turned her head slightly, pretending to be engrossed in a rack of snack foods.
The assistant, now practically vibrating with realization, glanced at the box of condoms in his hand and then back at Emma.
His thoughts sprinted like a mad man.
『Of course, someone this gorgeous has to be having sex. Damn, thinking about that makes my mouth water. And it’s probably with that guy next to her! Lucky bastard!』
“Hello? Dude?”
Emma’s voice snapped him out of his spiral.
She was leaning over the counter now as she waved her hand in front of his face.
“C’mon, answer me already. Do I need to speak to your manager or something?”
The assistant jolted upright with a bright, red face.
“S-, Sorry!”
He hurriedly scanned the box and bagged it.
As he handed the bag over, he awkwardly extended it past Emma to Scott.
“Huh?” Emma said, blinking at him.
The assistant cleared his throat.
“A lady as beautiful as you shouldn’t have to carry anything. A man should handle it!”
Scott raised an eyebrow, clearly baffled. “…Uh, okayyy?”
Emma stared at the assistant in surprise for a moment, then let out a laugh.
“Good answer, kid.”
She reached out and gently patted him on the head.
The assistant stiffened as his face turned an even deeper shade of red while his eyes darted to the floor.
Scott and Emma headed for the exit.
The glass door jingled softly as they stepped outside.
The assistant watched them leave, still rooted to the spot.
Slowly, he reached up and touched the spot on his head where Emma’s hand had been.
“I’m never washing my hair again…”
He couldn’t be more content.
Meanwhile…
Tess’s fingers reached for her temple and massaged the dull ache that had been plaguing her for hours.
Her lips pressed flat as she muttered to herself.
“Seriously, how does a hospital not have aspirin?”
She sighed out her frustration.
“Unbelievable…”
She stepped forward as her heeled boots clicked softly against the concrete. Just as she was about to push the door open, something caught her eye.
Her eyebrows pulled together in a slight frown as she turned her head.
She saw someone she recognized.
He was tall, with broad shoulders, and moved with an easy, confident stride. Beside him was a woman who stuck close to his side, clutching his arm, subtly pressing her breasts against him, and laughing very softly.
Tess froze as her heart skipped a beat.
“Wait a second…” she murmured under her breath.
Her eyes narrowed as she leaned forward and squinted to get a better look. The young man turned slightly, and the soft glow from a nearby streetlamp illuminated his face.
It was Scott.
“What’s he doing here…?”
Her gaze shifted to the woman beside him—Emma.
The way she leaned into him and her hand brushed his arm as they walked, made Tess feel irritated.
They were laughing, completely at ease, as if the world around them didn’t exist.
『Isn’t she a little too old for him…?』
It didn’t sit well with Tess.
Her lips parted, but no words came out.
Instead, she slipped her phone from her coat pocket and her fingers went on autopilot. With a quick swipe to unlock the screen, she opened the camera app, zoomed in, and snapped a picture.
As she stared at the screen, her face squeezed more.
The image was crystal clear—Scott and Emma, close enough to look like a couple and their faces so bright with a happiness that felt oddly irritating to Tess.
『Disgusting woman…』
Tess gripped her phone like she wanted to crush it.
