Chapter 95: Strength from Tomorrow
Scott paced back and forth with Lady Fortress still cradled in his arms and a massive grin plastered across his face.
Her tiny body barely weighed anything, and the way she snored peacefully, completely oblivious to everything happening around them, only allowed him to be much more expressive of his excitement.
“This is crazy!”
Scott chuckled as he shook his head.
“Time travel is real. Like, actually real! I mean, it makes sense, considering interdimensional warlords like Gremulaxx were a thing in Blue Atom Comics back in the day—bestsellers for years—but still!”
He paused mid-step, shooting a wide-eyed stare at Denise and Future Scott, who stood silently watching him.
“But the fact that I time travel?!”
His grin stretched impossibly wider.
“That’s so fucking awesome!”
Unable to contain himself, Scott rushed toward them, stopping just short of colliding with Future Scott. He leaned in close as his eyes sparkled with anticipation.
“So, tell me…”
He was practically bouncing in place.
“What happens a few years from now? Do I join some massive tech company and invent cool stuff? Ooooo, maybe even make my own? Or maybe I finally get my own scientist reality TV show?”
He clapped his hands together, careful not to drop Lady Fortress.
“No, wait—better! Please, please, pleeease tell me I solve the Riemann Hypothesis!”
Denise tilted her head as her black hair flowed over one shoulder. She placed a thoughtful hand on her chin, her long fingers gently stroking it as her beautiful, black eyes drifted upward.
“Ah, Riemann’s Hypothesis…”
She was trying to recall something.
“I remember the guy who solved it. Poor bastard got sucked into a black hole that led straight to the Dreamsphere.”
Scott blinked. “Eh?”
Before he could process that bizarre revelation, Future Scott’s expression darkened. His eyes narrowed, and a flash of anger crossed his face. Without warning, he lunged forward to grab Scott by the neck with startling force.
“IS THAT ALL YOU CAN ASK ABOUT?!”
Future Scott roared as his voice boomed with fury.
“SOME STUPID UNSOLVABLE EQUATION?! TECH COMPANIES? A REALITY TV SHOW?!”
Scott gasped.
His mind racing as Future Scott’s grip tightened.
“Wha—what are you—?!”
Future Scott leaned in closer with rageful eyes.
“Are you so blind and dense that you can’t even ask about what happens to Gwen? Or Brigid?! Or Amalie?! Even Beca?! Don’t they matter?!”
Scott’s breath hitched. “What are you talking about?”
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Future Scott’s voice cracked.
His fury carried something deeper—pain.
“It’s because of this stupid shit you do that Emma dies!”
Scott’s eyes widened in horror.
“Wh—what? Emma… dies?”
Future Scott’s voice broke.
“YES! And you’re the one who kills her!”
The words hit Scott like a freight train.
“Wait… what…?”
His arms instinctively tightened around Lady Fortress as he stared up at his future self, fear and disbelief etched across his face.
“No…” he whispered. “That can’t be…”
Future Scott staggered back, clutching his chest as if the weight of his own words was too much to bear.
“I’m the one… who killed her… my mistakes…”
His voice was barely audible, his breaths ragged.
Scott turned to Denise.
“I don’t understand. What does he mean?”
His voice trembled, almost like a lost child.
Denise crossed her arms under her bare breasts.
She had her usual calm, indifferent look, but even that couldn’t fully mask the frustration showing through.
“In the future…”
Her tone was softer than normal.
“There was a huge fight between you and Emma. It was about your… well, harem.”
She hesitated, then glanced at Future Scott.
She wanted to know he was alright with what she was saying before she could continue.
“It left Emma broken. And before you could tell her you’d find a way to fix things—to avoid the harem entirely—she’d already made up her mind.”
Scott’s blood ran cold. “No… she didn’t…”
“She did…”
Denise was blunt, but there was still sadness in her voice.
“Emma killed herself. And it was… one of the saddest deaths I’ve ever felt.”
Denise’s eyes grew distant, carrying a mesmerizing emotion Scott couldn’t quite place.
“Very few deaths ever affect me, but hers… it was so strong, so painful, so unresolved, it almost felt like I would die. That’s how much she loved you.”
Scott staggered back as Lady Fortress still slept soundly in his muscular arms.
His mind reeled as Denise’s words became clearer.
It felt like a heavy curtain over his mind had been pulled away, and suddenly, he understood everything—both what he should and shouldn’t have known.
The sheer weight of it all made him feel like collapsing.
“No… she… she really…”
Denise nodded. “She really did.”
“But…”
Scott stammered.
“That doesn’t make sense. How would you—”
“She would know…”
Future Scott interrupted.
“Because Denise isn’t just some goth chick.”
Scott turned back to Denise as his forehead wrinkled.
“Wait… then who is she?”
Denise offered a mild smile, then tilted her head slightly.
“I’m Demise…”
It came out very simply.
“The Queen of Death and Rebirth. One of the high ranking nobilities in the Sphere of Darkness—what your philosophers call the Darksphere.”
She pressed an index finger against her chin as her eyes gently crawled to the side.
“… or was it called the Atrumsphere?”
Scott’s mouth fell open. “You mean… you’re…”
“Mhm. The personification of Death itself…”
Denise finished as her smile widened ever so slightly.
Future Scott exhaled heavily.
Finally, he regained some composure.
“I thought all my worries were over when you didn’t go rogue and kill all those innocent civilians. But now… something worse might be coming.”
Scott frowned, still processing everything.
“Worse? Like what?”
Future Scott took a moment to prepare his words.
“Denise wouldn’t let me tell you about that, but for now, it doesn’t really matter. What matters is that Emma, in this timeline—the main one, the original from which all other timelines branch out—is in serious danger.”
“I-, Is she really though? You said Emma in your timeline kills herself, so that shouldn’t equate to mine, right?”
Scott was eager to know.
Future Scott hesitated, then glanced at Denise.
“The only people who should be able to see her are the dead, the dying, or those already teetering on the edge of death itself. The only other exceptions would be Immortals and those who are beyond life and death…”
Scott froze. His gaze darted between the two of them.
“Then why… can I…?”
Future Scott’s eyes sharpened darkly.
“Because… you’re about to die.”
“What──?!”
“The Black Disaster Armor… its overuse destroyed your heart. You’re basically a breathing corpse right now.”
Scott staggered, his mind spinning.
“What the fuck?! This is too much! Way too much!”
“I guess so…”
Denise managed to reply while playing with her breasts.
“Sometimes I think my nipples are a little too fat… yunno? It’s not like I even lactate or anything like that.”
Future Scott knocks Denise on the head.
“OW──!!” Denise hissed painfully.
“Focus. Now.”
“Tch, alright…”
The goth lady gave Future Scott a mean side-eye while she gently rubbed the top of her head.
Denise tilted her head back to Scott.
Her arms once again crossed under her bouncing breasts.
“Your death isn’t really a big deal, you know…”
She said, as though commenting on the weather.
Scott stared at her with half-lidded, dreary eyes, the life completely drained from his expression.
“Oh. Fantastic…”
His tone was so flat it could’ve been mistaken for sarcasm… if not for how genuinely dead inside he sounded.
Denise sighed, massaging her temples.
“Listen, it’s not as simple as that. The prime timeline is always experiencing constant changes. What was supposed to happen doesn’t just disappear. Instead, it creates a new branch where it happens, and things keep progressing there… infinitely.”
Scott raised an eyebrow as a spark of skepticism returned to the dullness of his eyes.
“What? Like… really? An alternate timeline?”
“Yes…”
Denise said, nodding.
“In this prime timeline, we were hoping Emma would be safe. But for some reason, she can still see me, which means her death is likely inevitable.”
She jabbed a finger in Scott’s direction.
“That’s where you come in, genius. If you don’t want her to end up killing herself, you’re going to have to fix it.”
Her finger shifted to point at Future Scott.
“Otherwise, you’ll turn into this mess.”
Future Scott frowned, arms crossed tightly over his chest.
“Oh. Fantastic…” he muttered darkly.
Scott’s gaze dropped to the tiny, peacefully snoring Lady Fortress in his arms.
He stared at her for a moment, then grunted lowly.
“I’m not sure I can… I mean… you guys said I’m about to die and besides… I failed to even get Lady Fortress out of here. If I can’t even do that, what makes you think I can save Emma? Or anyone else, for that matter?”
Future Scott’s jaw tightened.
There was such a conflicted expression on his worn face.
He didn’t look like he wanted to help… whether out of resentment or the sheer impossibility of undoing what had already been done.
However, Denise wasn’t having it.
She shoved Future Scott forward with surprising strength as her sharp black-painted nails dug into his back as she gave him an impatient nod.
“Go on, big guy… give him the pep talk. It’s why you’re here, isn’t it?”
Future Scott sighed heavily, then his shoulders slumped.
Reluctantly, he stepped closer to his younger self and placed a firm hand on Scott’s shoulder.
“Look…”
He cleared his throat to get a softer, comforting tone.
“Do you really think I hate you for what happened?”
Scott flinched as guilt flashed across his face.
“Don’t you?” he asked quietly. “I mean… Emma…”
Future Scott’s lips pressed into a thin line.
He took a long breath, then shook his head.
“No. I don’t hate you. I hate myself.”
He paused just so he could frown.
“Which… yeah, I guess is kind of the same thing, isn’t it?”
Scott looked up at him.
His eyes searched for something—anything—that could make sense of the mess he was in.
Future Scott sighed again and stepped back.
He held out a hand.
“But here’s the thing. We’ve never really liked ourselves much anyway. So instead of focusing on what we hate, let’s focus on what we love.”
Scott blinked.
“What we… love?”
Future Scott nodded, a small, weary smile tugging at the corners of his chapped lips.
“Yeah. Like taking responsibility for the women in our lives and all the innocent lives that’ll be lost if we don’t do what we were always meant to do.”
Scott hesitated and his grip tightened slightly around Lady Fortress.
“But what if…”
He swallowed hard.
“What if I don’t have the strength to do it?”
Future Scott’s smile widened as a sliver of warmth broke through the bitterness in his tired face.
“Then you’ll borrow some from tomorrow.”
Scott’s eyes widened.
“Tomorrow…”
Slowly, he extended his hand.
Future Scott clasped it firmly, and the moment their hands touched, a surge of blue energy erupted between them.
… ZUUUUUUUU!!
It was warm, alive, and pulsing with power—a vibrant, slime-like entity that wrapped around Scott’s body. It seeped into his skin, his blood, his very being, filling him with an overwhelming sensation of strength and clarity.
He could feel himself getting stronger!
The light was blinding for a moment, and then it was gone.
… and so were all of them.
━ ━ ━ ━
South District, Metro City…
The streets were chaos.
Soldiers shouted orders that were dulled by the deafening roar of Red Titan’s battle in the distance.
Camera drones hovered in the smoky air to broadcast the scene live to millions of horrified viewers.
Civilians scrambled toward evacuation zones as military vehicles rumbled by.
“Move! Keep moving!”
Barked a soldier, gripping a megaphone.
He waved frantically at the panicked crowd.
An elderly woman tripped as her cane skittered across the asphalt. Without hesitation, a young soldier rushed to her side and lifted her frail body with surprising gentleness.
“I’ve got you, ma’am!”
He spoke softly.
Next, he carried her toward a waiting transport.
Nearby, a man clutched his screaming toddler as he tried to shove through the throng.
“Please, my wife is back there!”
“We’ll find her, sir…”
Another soldier snapped, pushing him forward.
“But you need to get to safety first!”
Pregnant women were ushered into armored vehicles, some sobbing as soldiers supported them. A group of young men, unarmed but determined, formed an impromptu line to help carry children and guide the flow of people.
The livestream chat was relentless.
[Metro City civilians are soft as hell. This would NEVER happen in Meteor City.]
└ [Real talk. Metro thinks they’re better, but look at this mess. Whose mortality rate gonna hit 10k in one day? 💀]
└ [Y’all trolling, but this is low-key funny.]
└ [Meteor City would’ve sent a real hero, not just tanks and jets.]
[Y’all don’t have an ounce of sympathy? People are dying!]
└ [Bro, it’s Metro. Sympathy not included.]
└ [Bet this stream gets demonetized anyway.]
└ [💀💀💀]
[Respect to the soldiers, though. They’re doing the best they can.]
└ [True, Artillery Suit Squad >>> the clowns flying jets.]
└ [Nah, jets are just there to get farmed. Red Titan speedrunning that powerup.]
・・・
The Artillery Suits were relentless as their massive cannons fired plasma rounds at Red Titan’s colossal form.
… pew! pew────BOOOOOOM!!
Above, fighter jets streaked through the air to launch volley after volley of missiles.
… sheeeeeww────BOOOOOOM!!
Nothing worked.
Red Titan absorbed every attack as its glowing red eye flared with each impact. As if mocking its attackers, it sprouted more cannons and grotesque metallic limbs, which swatted jets out of the sky with terrifying accuracy.
“General Stone, permission to speak!”
Came a pilot’s voice over comms.
Standing stoically at the Forward Command Post, General Stone growled.
“Granted.”
“Sir, I don’t think this is working. The more we attack, the stronger it gets. Maybe we need an alternative strategy.”
Stone’s face hardened.
“Our orders are clear. We fight to the last breath. The Hero Agency has abandoned us, so it’s on us to stop this thing.”
“But sir──!”
“If the evacuation fails, we’ll nuke the entire city. That’s the President’s call, and we’ll execute it if needed.”
The pilot’s voice wavered.
“General… you can’t be serious.”
Stone’s cold gaze burned into the comms monitor.
“Do I look like I’m joking, boy? Now focus on staying alive and keep firing!”
“YES, SIR!!”
The pilots and soldiers responded in unison.
The livestream erupted.
[LMAOOO, bro really said, ‘Just don’t get absorbed.’ Like that’s an option. 💀]
└ [General Stone speedrunning the ‘Most Hated NPC’ award.]
└ [This guy’s about to nuke his own city. Who voted for this man?!]
└ [#StoneOut2024 trending yet?]
[Wait, what about Black Knight? He’s not dead, right?]
└ [Nah, Black Knight’s done. Pack it up.]
└ [Cap. He’s coming back. Just wait for the anime moment.]
・・・
No End in Sight
Red Titan’s massive claw slammed into a building, sending debris raining down on the streets below.
Fighter jets spiraled out of control and crashed into skyscrapers or exploded mid-air.
On the ground, soldiers in Artillery Suits were crushed, disintegrated, or swept aside like insects.
The chat oscillated between despair and dark humor.
[Damn 💀 This monster’s gonna wipe Metro and hit the next city by dinner.]
└ [Metro’s gone. GG.]
└ [At least evacuate the pregnant ladies. Come on.]
[Where’s the Hero Agency? They’ve got one job!]
└ [Probably sipping tea in their ivory tower.]
└ [Nah, they’re waiting for the death toll to get spicy before showing up.]
・・・
Amid the chaos, Red Titan froze.
Its massive body trembled and sent ripples through the ground.
Soldiers halted their attacks.
They were unsure of what was happening.
“Why are we stopping?!” Stone barked.
“Sir, it’s… it’s not moving…”
A soldier stammered over the comms.
“Its head… it’s glowing blue. Like it’s about to—”
“KEEP ATTACKING!” Stone roared.
But before the order could be executed, Red Titan released an ear-splitting roar that shook the entire city. Its head began to swell and deform, glowing brighter and brighter.
Then it exploded.
… krak────BOOOOOOM!!
A brilliant streak of blue energy shot skyward, illuminating the entire metropolis. The beam was visible from every corner of Metro City, leaving soldiers and civilians alike staring in awe.
“What the hell is that?”
Mercury whispered, her wide eyes fixed on the sky.
“Is it a star?” Pulsar murmured.
“Or a missile?” a wounded soldier muttered.
The chat exploded alongside the blue streak.
[“WHAT WAS THAT?!”]
└ [Alien weapon? God? WHAT?!]
└ [Metro City unlocking secret weapons now?]
[This isn’t over. No way it’s over.]
└ [Plot twist incoming.]
└ [I’m hyped. Let’s GO!]
