Chapter 104: The Two Men’s Identities
Declan didn’t immediately continue. Fishing out an item from the inside of his jacket, he placed it on the coffee table before Lariette.
“Before I tell you more, I’ll give you this.”
Lariette lowered her gaze from Declan to the item on the table. She unconsciously arched her brows slightly at the sight of the familiar thing.
It was her lost phone, placed inside a clear plastic bag. The screen was black and, despite being cleaned, she still saw traces of mud on its sleek body.
Ruediger told Lariette that he informed Declan about her missing phone but, she didn’t expect the latter to find it. It seemed like the bodyguards did a good job scouring the isle.
“We couldn’t turn it on,” Rafael said, his voice imbued with slight guilt, “Most likely it’s damaged already. But… you can try sending it for a repair.”
One of the bodyguards found the phone hidden under a bush near the cabin. Rafael himself cleaned the muddy frame of the smartphone before trying to switch it on.
But, nothing happened. The rain and the mud broke the phone.
“I will do that,” Lariette replied curtly as she reached for the phone. Lifting her eyes back to Declan and Rafael, she added, “Thank you, anyway.”
Lariette didn’t care whether the phone was damaged or not. She only minded the data inside, including the tens of thousands of photos in the phone gallery, especially the screenshots.
Well, even if she rarely looked at the screenshots again, it was still a pity to lose them.
Sigh…
Chairman Delaney and Ruediger simply watched the short interaction between the siblings before Declan resumed his story. The latter’s voice resounded clearly in the bedroom.
The breeze from the outside blew past the open sliding doors, carrying along the faint echoes of the waves kissing the shore.
“They’re regular visitors here, coming from the city. Joseph Brooks and Thomas Morgan. They’re friends from the same uni before working together.”
Within a short time, Declan’s team of bodyguards successfully found out the identities of the two men. The men were still confined in the same place, waiting to be handed to the authorities.
From the surface, Joseph and Thomas seemed to be simple tourists. They were colleagues from an architecture firm in Avaloria City.
“They stayed together at a chalet. Those Brooks and Morgan lads came here this Thursday. They’re supposed to stay until this Monday. We’ve checked. They often rented the boats to tour the tiny islands.”
No one spoke as Declan continued narrating the findings related to the men. Lariette paid her full attention to her eldest brother, unwilling to miss any information.
“We found the remaining drugs in their chalet room. From what we knew, they already had the drugs with them upon their arrival.”
“We checked their whereabouts before they docked at the isle. Those lads were seen drinking in the bar until late last night. We got footage of them there.”
Declan paused, taking a moment to assess the look on Lariette’s face. Her face was still slightly pale yet, her sapphire eyes were sharp as she focused on him.
Was this the first time she ever looked directly at him? At least, without fear or hesitation?
Declan was unsure. Inwardly shaking his head, he resumed, thinking he owed Lariette all the details about the men.
“Up until that point, there wasn’t anything suspicious about them. They partied and mingled with the other clubgoers, most likely getting high from the drugs too. But…”
Once again, Declan took a pause. The slight edge at the end of his sentence earned a deeper frown on Lariette’s face. Rafael and Chairman Ruediger tensed up while Ruediger silently clenched his hands.
Clasping his hands tightly, Declan continued, “Around midnight, Brooks and Morgan sat together at one of the cubicles. Someone, a man, approached them.”
The drunk Joseph and Thomas sat far away from the other clubgoers as the night deepened. They enjoyed bottles of alcohol while chatting and smoking in between.
Then, a tall man clad in black appeared. His hoodie and mask concealed his face, only revealing a pair of eyes. Still, the cap worn by him obscured them.
“Was he someone important? Perhaps, their drug dealer? Or, something else?”

Lariette spoke for the first time after being quiet from the beginning. Her voice hinted at the tension clawing her heart.
Ruediger glanced at Declan as he stopped himself from answering Lariette. He was also surprised when he heard about the mysterious man, including the mention of Joseph and Thomas.
“Not their drug dealer,” Declan shook his head, his face expressing regret, “But, the man seemed to know the broker. Brooks and Morgan insisted they didn’t know him.”
Declan made sure the bodyguards questioned Joseph and Thomas separately. The two men said the same thing about the mysterious figure.
Aside from the initial denial, Joseph and Thomas cooperated with the bodyguards upon realizing their fates might turn worse if they insisted on being innocent.
The details spoken by the two men didn’t differ much. Declan could say for certain they were telling the truth.
“Brooks and Morgan said the man exchanged a few codes they previously used with the dealer. They initially thought he was an undercover police.”
According to Joseph and Thomas, the mysterious man simply chatted with them without revealing anything about his identity. They couldn’t help but be wary yet, their drunken states made it hard to think rationally.
Lariette found nothing was wrong. If she was in the two men’s shoes, they would be wary of the mysterious man too.
But… it seemed like there was something more behind his sudden appearance.
“What did they talk about?” asked Lariette, pressing to get more details, “Was there anything specific?”
Declan heaved out a sigh. The frown on his face deepened as he answered Lariette, his tone lowered.
“Before that man left, he mentioned something about Lilybrook Isle. He told the lads that a couple would visit the isle the next morning. Meaning, you and Mr. Ruediger here.”
Lariette unconsciously straightened her back. She abruptly looked at Ruediger who was also staring at her.
Those men… indeed went there because of them?
