Chapter 105: His Plan Had Loopholes
Despite not being his intention, Declan’s words sent alarm bells ringing in Lariette’s mind. She inwardly told herself not to panic because as of now, she was in a safe environment.
No matter who that man was, he couldn’t hurt her.
“Who was that man?” Lariette returned her gaze to Declan, her narrowing eyes flickering with suspicions, “Have you known his identity?”
Declan lightly shook his head, seemingly regretting not being able to give Lariette the answer she needed.
“Unfortunately, no.”
Lariette held back from sighing. She forced herself to relax instead of being agitated. Doing so wouldn’t be good for her.
“What else did you hear from them? Anything from your investigation?”
Lariette knew Declan learned more from what he had just told her. She could only hope there were more clues about the two men.
“Yes. There’s more.”
Under Lariette’s gaze, Declan resumed from where he paused. Ruediger, Chairman Delaney and Rafael said nothing, allowing the former’s voice to resound in the bedroom.
According to Joseph and Thomas, they barely remembered what the mysterious man said due to their drunken state. Still, the important pieces clung to their minds.
“The man appeared so suddenly. He only gave a vague message to Brooks and Morgan before he left, about how a couple will visit Lilybrook Isle the next morning.”
“He said they could get more drugs from you because you also knew the dealer. He left after handing them some of the drugs, most likely to convince them.”
“At first, they ignored what the man said until the next day they went boating. They saw you and Mr. Ruediger from afar.”
“They were still wary about what the man told them so, they approached you when you were alone. They panicked when you ran instead of… giving them the drugs…”
Pursing his lips, Declan stopped himself before saying something he was hesitant about. He purposely left a detail out, unsure whether to tell Lariette or not.
To Declan and Rafael’s ire, Joseph and Thomas fearfully said how the man mentioned the couple was prone to inviting people for a threesome.
That was another reason that lured the two scumbags to approach Lariette at the cabin, also trying to assault her. They thought they could have fun with her.
Fortunately, Lariette fought for herself before successfully fleeing. She even risked getting lost and heavily injured if she misstepped during the heavy rain.
Declan didn’t know what would happen if the men got what they desired. Even to imagine the occurrences frightened him.
‘They’ll pay for what they did.’
Declan was adamant about sending Joseph and Thomas to the authorities. Not only did the two men try to defile Lariette but, they were also in possession of drugs.
Who knew what kind of crime they had done before?
Inwardly shaking his head, Declan came up with his conclusion. He tried keeping his voice steady despite the tempestuous waves in his heart.
“The thing is… the man’s plan, if he really wanted to harm either you or Mr. Ruediger, was full of loopholes.”
Declan stopped after saying the last sentence, his countenance worsening. He could feel how the tension thickening in the air, reflecting everyone’s feelings.
Lariette was quiet as she let every word spoken by Declan into her mind. Her insides boiled with rage the more she heard him but, she held back from acting senselessly.
“Indeed,” Lariette parted her lips, her tone monotonous as her eyes remained on Declan, “Whoever that man was, his plan had loopholes.”
Ruediger nodded, followed by Chairman Delaney. Declan’s stories wiped the smiles off of their faces. They looked at Lariette, being concerned about her more than anything.
“He talked to those guys when they were drunk,” Chairman Delaney exhaled a sigh, sounding a little more exhausted than usual, “As if he didn’t mind whether they clearly heard him or not.”

Ruediger threw his questions to Declan once Chairman Delaney ended his remarks, his voice having a slight bite at its edge.
“Was there any contact between them afterward? Perhaps, through calls or messages? If that man simply left it at that, he really seemed unbothered whether his plan succeeded or not.”
Lariette nodded without saying anything. Her grandfather and Ruediger’s words mirrored her thoughts about this situation.
“There was no contact,” replied Declan as he swept his gaze to the three people sitting across him, “We’ve checked their phones, any electronic devices. There was none.”
The bodyguards not only scoured the isle but, they also did the same to Joseph and Thomas’ chalet room. Aside from the drugs, there was nothing suspicious.
“The man left the bar after he’s done talking to them,” Declan added cautiously, “We checked the surveillance cameras in the vicinity but, no traces at all.”
From the footage collected and reviewed by the bodyguards, they last saw the man disappearing into the pine forest near the bar.
The surveillance cameras only captured the edge of the forest, not further inside. At the same time, the dark night and looming shadows worked wonderfully in concealing him.
Declan assumed the man deliberately walked through the forest and exited where there was no monitor. His men also scoured the pine forest but, it was hard to unearth any clues.
Lariette clenched her hands, unable to hold back the disappointment. She really wanted to know who the mysterious man was.
Why did the man risk getting caught for a lousy plan?
Was he just fooling around? Or, did he not care whether he would succeed or not?
Lariette had no answer. Everything sounded stupid to her.
“Most likely he’s a regular tourist too. Seems like someone who knows even the rarely used paths on this island.”
Rafael chimed in, speaking for the first time in a while. His voice pulled Lariette out of her thoughts, drawing her attention to him.
Declan nodded, showing he shared the same opinion as Rafael. Straightening his back, he swept his gaze from Lariette to Ruediger and Chairman Delaney.
“We’ll keep investigating. Please keep your worry at bay.”
Lariette said nothing. She simply chose to trust Declan’s ability and resources in looking for the mysterious man.
