Chapter 110: Resembling a Vibrant Sunlit Forest Canopies
<.Chairman Delaney’s villa.>
Lariette felt generally better after she woke up from a long sleep later in the afternoon. The lingering fever remained but, her head was clearer and her movements were more fluid.
‘One-fifteen. Wow… I slept so much.’
Lariette didn’t remember at which hour she returned to bed after Declan and Rafael left but, she believed it was still early in the morning. Tearing her eyes away from the wall clock, she swept her gaze around the room.
‘Where is he?’
Lariette found no traces of Ruediger. The three-seater couch was empty while the door of the inner room was closed.
The bedroom was generally quiet. The only noises she heard were of her own breathing and the ones coming from the outside.
She inwardly hoped that the man managed to get some sleep after taking care of her last night.
Lariette smoothened her hair by running her fingers through her locks. She simply tied her hair into a messy bun before carefully stepping on the floor.
‘Still stings.’
Lariette tried to ignore the tingly pain from her feet as she headed to the washroom. She didn’t forget to get a change of clothes from the wardrobe beforehand.
“…did he prepare these? Or, Dr. Larson gave them?”
Lariette had just entered the washroom when something on the countertop caught her eye. Locking the door behind her, she slowly approached the sink area.
Waterproof hand and feet covers sat on the countertop. Touching the transparent plastic parts, Lariette knew these were practically weightless.
Curling up her lips, Lariette’s mood became better. No matter who was it, she felt cared for.
When Lariette emerged from the washroom feeling all refreshed, her sapphire eyes caught Ruediger sitting on the couch. He also looked at her as their gazes met.
“When did you wake up?” asked Ruediger, his lips carving into a familiar smile, “You look better, Lettie. Don’t you?”
Ruediger returned to the room five minutes ago, only to see no Lariette sleeping on the bed. Upon hearing the faint echoes of water splashing from the washroom, he knew where she disappeared into.
Soft chuckles slipped out of Lariette’s lips. She slowly walked to the couch before settling on the seat next to Ruediger.
“Just now. I do feel better now. Oh, did you sleep, Eddy? Have you eaten?”
“I ate with Grandpa and Maddie,” Ruediger kept his gaze on Lariette’s countenance, unable to look away. The smile on his lips softened, “I got some sleep before that. So, we’re even?”
Blinking, Lariette shook her head in helplessness as laughter rolled out from her mouth. She remembered urging Ruediger to sleep because he hadn’t rested much since yesterday.
“Yeah, we’re even.”
Lariette and Ruediger exchanged a soft, fond smile.
Her sapphire eyes, so deep and luminous like the ocean under the moonlight, collided with his emerald gaze, resembling the vibrant sunlit forest canopies.
At that particular moment, both of them held their breath as if afraid of breathing out loud.
Ruediger was the first to break the silence. His husky voice sounded so mellow as he spoke, the contrast in his tone was palpable.
“Do you want to go out? How about getting some fresh air while having lunch? Grandpa and Maddie are outside. They’re playing chess in the garden.”
Lariette nodded once, “I’d love to.”
Ruediger and Lariette left the room, heading to the garden in the side yard. He walked slowly by her side, deliberately matching her pace.

Ruediger texted Madeline beforehand, saying he and Lariette would join her and Chairman Delaney soon. The helpers would bring food there.
The afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the villa. The clear sky and its brightness indicated nothing of yesterday’s storm.
The gentle sea breeze carried the salty ocean air, blowing past the lush greenery and vibrant blooms of the yard. The rhyme of the waves harmonized with the soft rustle of the leaves, creating a soothing melody of nature.
Lariette saw Madeline and Chairman Delaney sit in one of the garden pavilions. A chessboard was set up on the wrought-iron table between them.
Her friend and her grandfather seemed to be so engrossed in their play, until…
“Lari!”
Madeline cried once she noticed Lariette by Ruediger’s side. She quickly jumped to her feet, catching Chairman Delaney off guard. The elderly man turned his head to look at his granddaughter.
“My granddaughter!”
Unable to stop herself, Lariette laughed in helplessness. Madeline and Chairman Delaney’s similar reaction seemed funny in her eyes, also flooding her heart with warmth.
“Did you have fun? Hehe, only playing chess? How about a stroll at the beach?”
Lariette settled on a chair next to Chairman Delaney while Ruediger opted for the one by Madeline’s side. The elderly man laughed as he patted his granddaughter’s arm.
“It’s so hot now. This old man can’t stand the heat. Playing chess is more fun.”
Lariette chuckled, amused by Chairman Delaney’s remarks. She was simply joking with her grandfather, and also with Madeline.
“Do you feel better now?” Madeline propped one elbow on the table, supporting her chin as she stared at Lariette, “Your lunch will be here soon. You should eat more to get even better.”
Lariette noticed Ruediger arching his brows once Madeline spoke, seemingly agreeing with his cousin. Her lips trembled from holding back laughing.
“Yes, yes. I’ll eat more than usual,” Lariette shrugged, her lips curling up, “Continue playing. I wanna watch you battle against my grandpa.”
“Hahaha! I’m on my way to lose! I can’t catch up with your grandpa’s skills!”
Nevertheless, Madeline and Chairman Delaney resumed playing. Lariette watched from one side while waiting for her lunch to arrive. Ruediger’s attention was also on the game.
When Lariette began eating, Ruediger replaced Madeline as Chairman Delaney’s opponent. The two ladies focused on the intense game between the men, knowing how both of them could easily rival each other.
Being surrounded by the people who cared for her while enjoying mundane things was enough for Lariette.
