Chapter 119: Bananas About Groceries
As promised, Ruediger and Lariette headed to the grocery store around four in the afternoon. Both of them woke up earlier from their nap, all eager to go shopping together.
“Should we go on foot? It’s just nearby,” suggested Lariette as they walked out of the elevator.
“Yup! We can take some fresh air,” Ruediger quickly agreed.
The grocery store was within walking distance. The estimated time was less than ten minutes on foot. Because they don’t plan to buy so many things at one go, they didn’t need to use any vehicle.
Dressed casually in thin yet comfortable clothes, Ruediger and Lariette stepped out of Lumina Spring’s gate. The golden hues of the summer afternoon greeted them.
The dazzling sun hung low, casting long shadows on the bustling street. Lariette and Ruediger heard the distant laughter from the nearby park, coming from the children playing.
“Eddy, this way.”
“Coming.”
As they walked down the pedestrian walkway, the warm breeze carried the aroma of blooming flowers from the nearby florist. They also smelled the faint yet, delicious tang of street food sold from a cart down the road.
Holding a big folded reusable shopping bag in his right hand, Ruediger turned to look at Lariette. She walked on the inner side of the road.
“Have you thought about what you want for dinner tonight?”
Ruediger wondered what he should make for Lariette. He saw her eating one of the peanut bars he left in the fridge before they left the apartment just now.
“Wontons in chili oil sounds so yummy,” Lariette laughed at her own words, “We already have chili oil in the kitchen. Let’s get pre-made wraps. We can make them together.”
Lariette scrolled VibeTube while waiting for Ruediger to get ready earlier. She stumbled upon a reel of someone making wontons in chili oil. Seeing the short video was enough to make her drool.
“Alright. We can make more and freeze them for later too,” Ruediger quickly agreed. His face brightened with a smile once he heard Lariette’s suggestion of making the wontons together.
Wouldn’t this mean they got to spend more time together?
“Great! Frozen wontons in stock? I’m in!”
Laughter spilled from Ruediger once he saw the excited look on Lariette’s face. He began racking his brain, thinking of making different fillings for the wontons instead of just one.
Soon, Lariette and Ruediger finally arrived at the grocery store. The man paused while looking up at the vivid yellow color spelling its name against the green board.
“‘Bananas About Groceries’?” Ruediger mused, a helpless look casting on his face, “The name is so cheeky.”
Lariette nodded in agreement, also thinking the same. As she spoke, her voice was tinged with laughter, “I heard the founder got it from his grandson. It’s a family-owned rather than from a big chain.”
As far as Lariette knew, the owner was originally a farmer from the suburbs before he started making it big with his business. He owned several plots of land in this district, all being rented and thrived well.
“The prices are generally lower than the other stores,” said Lariette while tugging at Ruediger’s arm, urging him to go inside, “Most of the fresh produce comes from his farms.”
The cool air of the grocery store chased the lingering summer heat that clung to Lariette and Ruediger. They heard the indistinct chatters from the fellow shoppers, mixed with the upbeat music and the beeping of cash registers.
The atmosphere inside the grocery store was lively yet calming.
Ruediger grabbed a shopping trolley, carefully pushing it in front of him. He glanced at Lariette with a small smile, “First stop is the produce section, yes?”
“Hehe, yes!” Lariette nodded, her smile widening, “Let’s go get some meat.”
While pushing the trolley, Ruediger read the list he made before leaving the apartment. Some of the items written there could be used to make the wonton fillings. He just needed to increase the amount if necessary.
Ruediger didn’t mind coming to this store every other day at least, after all the distance from the apartment was small. He used to shop like that all the time back when he still lived in his residence.
Lariette and Ruediger arrived at the produce section, where arrays of fresh fruits and vegetables were neatly arranged. All of them looked very enticing.

Ruediger stopped in front of the ginger and garlic display. Letting go of the trolley, he inspected them carefully.
“We need these for the wonton filling,” Ruediger mused, getting a few pieces of ginger and garlic, “Also some scallions.”
Lariette silently looked at Ruediger, the smile on her lips softening. Turning away from him, she grabbed the scallions from the next shelf.
“These look fresh enough. We can get the premade wrappers in the frozen section later.”
Lariette showed the green stalks to Ruediger. Arching his brows, he gave it a quick sniff before nodding.
“Yes, they’re fresh.”
Ruediger placed the ginger, garlic and scallions inside the trolley. He didn’t realize that Lariette had been assessing his movement.
Ruediger really looked so much at ease when choosing the ingredients. For a second, Lariette couldn’t help but compare his crimson hair with the vibrant red bell peppers nearby.
“You act like a professional chef buying ingredients,” Lariette said jokingly, followed by laughter. Her sapphire eyes glinted under the lights brightening the store.
“I take my cooking seriously,” Ruediger replied with a smirk, “Haven’t you benefited from it?”
“I can’t deny that.”
Lariette and Ruediger broke into laughter, both were amused by each other’s remarks. Their chuckles echoed alongside the chatters and music from their surroundings.
Next, they headed to the meat section.
Ruediger picked up a pack of ground beef. He held it out, waiting for Lariette’s approval. She nodded after a brief look.
“Let’s get some shrimps too,” said Ruediger while putting the pack inside the trolley, “I’ll make two fillings for the wontons.”
“Hehe, okay, Chef Eddy~”
Lariette’s upbeat tone earned laughter from Ruediger. He got a few more items from the section before pushing the trolley to the seafood counter. A friendly attendant greeted them.
“May I help you, sir? Our sea bass is so fresh. You can just fry it and it will taste divine already.”
Ruediger glanced at the tray where shrimps were piled up. He also looked at the sea bass, placed among the crushed ice. The clear eyes, the reddish gills and the shiny scales showed how true the staff’s words were.
Ruediger replied to the attendant, his tone polite, “Half a kilo of shrimp, please. I’ll take two sea bass too.”
“Cleaning and deveining?” the attendant asked further.
“Yes, thank you,” Ruediger glanced at Lariette, “Do you want anything else?”
“That’s enough,” Lariette shook her head slightly, her lips smiling, “Let’s get some chicken too. Your grilled honey lemon chicken was so good!”
Ruediger chuckled, pleased to hear how much Lariette loved the dish he made before, “Okay. Let’s go there. I’ll make it tomorrow night.”
Lariette held back from laughing. She couldn’t describe how happy and lucky she was to get a husband, despite contracted one, who was so skilled in cooking.
She made the greatest decision by dumping the cheating trash!
