Chapter 120: A Little Red Bird
Ruediger and Lariette continued their shopping journey. They walked through the aisles after getting the seafood packed by the attendant, heading to the poultry section.
“Let’s get the ripe bananas. I wanna make a banana cake.”
“Grandma! Mimi want chocolate please~”
“Both cookies look yummy! Should we get both?”
The air in the grocery store buzzed softly with the chatters of the shoppers, echoing alongside the song played by the speakers. Lariette and Ruediger walked past them before reaching the poultry section.
“Everything has been packed,” muttered Ruediger, his eyes scanning the rows of neatly packaged chicken cuts, “I’ll get thighs and drummettes too. What do you think?”
Lariette nodded eagerly. She almost salivated as she said, “Spicy honey drummettes sound good. Don’t you think so?”
Lariette’s remarks spilled laughter from Ruediger’s lips. He shook his head in helplessness as he saw the hungry look on her face.
“Hehe, seems like that will be on this week’s menu,” Ruediger commented teasingly. Leaning over the shelf, he looked for packs with fresh chicken cuts.
Lariette bit her lower lip, feeling the heat emanating from her cheeks. She inwardly told herself not to show too much of her gluttonous self to Ruediger.
“T-that’s the frozen section. I’ll look for the wrappers.”
Lariette pointed in a direction before quickly rushing to the frozen product aisle. She swore she could hear Ruediger laughing at her antics.
Walking down slowly in the aisle, Lariette looked for the premade wonton wrappers. She stopped once she spotted them nestling among the other frozen products.
“He said we should make extra so… two packs should be enough.”
Lariette picked two packs of wrappers, one having fifty pieces each, from the frozen shelf. Even if she and Ruediger didn’t use all of the wrappers, they could keep the remaining pieces in the freezer.
Holding the packs with both hands, Lariette winced from the chill. She quickly returned to Ruediger. He was just done with picking the chicken cuts.
“Do you think these are too many?” Lariette asked once she reached Ruediger’s side. Her voice was soft as she smiled sheepishly.
Ruediger briefly looked at Lariette’s face before his eyes lowered to what she was holding. He took them from her, finding her palms reddened from the frozen wrapper packs.
“These are enough,” Ruediger curled up his lips, his husky voice hinting of mellowness, “They’re perfect for the wontons. Thank you, Lettie.”
“…you don’t have to thank me for this,” Lariette murmured, her cheeks pinkening.
Ruediger said nothing but, Lariette saw how his emerald eyes lit up softly. She darted her gaze away, suddenly feeling conscious of his eyes on her.
“What else should we get?” Lariette swept her gaze around the area, purposely changing the subject, “How about some fruits?”
“Yeah. We should get some,” replied Ruediger, acting normally despite wanting to tease Lariette.
The pair got some red apples, strawberries, blueberries and bananas. They ventured to the other aisles after getting some fruits.
“Oh… I forgot,” Lariette muttered to herself once she and Ruediger walked down the aisle of the household items. Without saying anything to him, she dashed in a direction.
Ruediger caught the sound of Lariette walking away. He turned around, finding the lady stopped opposite the area showing various kinds of aprons.
“Is she looking for new aprons?” Ruediger questioned himself. He quickly pushed the trolley toward Lariette.
Standing before the display rack, Lariette looked from one apron to the next. Her silky strands swayed behind her back, hanging just above her waist as she moved within the area.
“You wanna get a new apron?” asked Ruediger, curious about Lariette’s behavior. He stopped the trolley right before the display rack, not wanting to disrupt the middle of the aisle.
“Well…” Lariette tore her eyes away from the apron, a sheepish smile curling on her lips, “I should have gotten you an apron but, I forgot about it until now.”

Blinking, Ruediger stared blankly at Lariette until a bulb suddenly lit up in his mind. Shaking his head, he asked, “Is it because of your pink frilly apron?”
“Yes…”
Shaking his head slowly, Ruediger let out helpless laughter. He recalled the adorable pink apron owned by Lariette, the one he often used when cooking or baking in the kitchen.
“I don’t mind a pink apron, but…” Ruediger scratched his right cheek, his eyes darting from Lariette’s face to the aprons, “One with a frilly is a bit… especially to wear every day.”
Ruediger’s remark elicited laughter from Lariette. This was the first time he said something about the apron.
“Hehe, want me to pick the apron or you do it yourself?”
Ruediger paused for a second before saying, his voice low, “I’ll let my wife choose one for me.”
Lariette blinked, never seeing that coming. Once again her cheeks were dusted with the pink color.
For some reason, she thought he spoke so softly when he mentioned the word ‘wife.’
“T-then, I’ll pick it for you.”
Lariette coughed awkwardly as she shifted her eyes from Ruediger back to the aprons. She reached for a few, feeling the fabric while assessing the designs and prints.
“This one, what do you think?”
Lariette grabbed one of the aprons, picking a dark blue one with subtle checkered patterns. The neck strap, including the one at the waist, was in the plain black color.
Also, he saw the embroidery of a small red bird on the right side of the apron. The sight of it elicited chuckles out of him.
“This one is cute,” said Ruediger, pointing to the little red bird.
“…sorry! I didn’t notice it!”
Horrified, Lariette’s eyes widened in disbelief. She scolded herself for not seeing the embroidery sooner.
“Hahaha! It’s fine!”
Ruediger took the apron from Lariette, more laughter rolling out of his mouth. Holding the fabric in his hands, he liked how it feel against his skin.
And…
The little red bird was already adorable but, it became much more cuter because she was the one who picked this apron.
How could he say no to this?
