Chapter 121: More Meaningful When She’s by His Side
When it was time to head to the counter, Ruediger brought along the apron with the little red bird embroidery. He smiled teasingly at Lariette whose cheeks almost resembled the color of the bird.
“I will pay!”
Lariette hurriedly tapped her card on the payment terminal machine once the cashier announced the total amount of their purchases. She grinned triumphantly at the sight of Ruediger’s helpless smile.
“Lettie, we can take turns paying, you know.”
Ruediger said to Lariette as he shouldered the reusable shopping bag, glancing at her who also had one. They walked away from the counter, back to the summer heat outside the grocery store.
Chuckles spilled from Lariette’s lips. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, she smiled at Ruediger, “Hehe, alright~ The next time we’re shopping for groceries, I’ll let you pay.”
Ruediger nodded once, refraining from looking too eager. He liked the idea of going shopping for groceries with Lariette again.
It was a mundane task, only to be meaningful when she was by his side.
Ruediger and Lariette walked down the pedestrian walkway, going back to Lumina Spring. The sun dipped more than before as the hour changed. Still, the summer heat blanketed the city with its warmth.
The laughter from the nearby playground was louder than earlier. Most likely more children played there compared to before.
“Lettie, the school where you’re teaching,” Ruediger suddenly said once they reached the apartment gate. His eyes landed on Lariette’s face, “Is it in that direction?”
Lariette’s gaze followed to where Ruediger’s index finger was pointing. Nodding, she answered with a smile, “Yes. Only ten minutes on foot from here. Speaking of, I have a meeting this Thursday.”
Ruediger raised his brows. Slowing his walking pace, he remembered what he told Lariette before they went to the island.
“It’s in two days. I’ll bake something. You should bring it to school. Does any of your colleagues have allergies or whatnot?”
Lariette chuckled, also recalling Ruediger’s promise. He was the one who suggested bringing some of his baked goods to school when she had a summer activity.
“As far as I know, no one has allergies or any special dietary preferences. Still, let me check again.”
Ruediger nodded. He already had ideas in mind but he wouldn’t finalize anything until Lariette’s clarification.
Soon, they reached the apartment unit on the tenth floor. Ruediger and Lariette immediately headed to the kitchen, bringing along the grocery bags.
“I’ll start making the fillings,” said Ruediger while wearing the newly bought apron over his front. Grinning, he added teasingly, “Oh, this apron fits me perfectly.”
Lariette rolled her eyes, “That’s just a standard size.”
Ruediger’s soft laughter pinkened Lariette’s cheeks. She shot him a glare before reaching for her own pink frilly apron. She didn’t forget to tie her long hair into a loose bun.
Once Ruediger separated the ingredients for the wonton fillings from the groceries, Lariette began sorting all of them, including the dry items. Their footsteps echoed in the vast kitchen.
As Lariette packed the leafy greens loosely inside a clear container with dry paper towels, Ruediger was chopping the shrimp into fine pieces. He had already seasoned the ground beef with blends of spices.
Lariette quietly glanced at Ruediger. This was not the first time she watched him in action but, awe still flooded in her heart.
Every one of Ruediger’s movements spelled out his expertise in cooking. He displayed no hesitation or wasteful moves.
Biting her lower lip, Lariette held back from chuckling. She couldn’t wait to taste the wontons with the fillings specially made by Ruediger. Without any doubt, they would be divine.
Soon, Ruediger and Lariette sat across from each other at the kitchen island. A neatly arranged setup for making wontons was laid on the table.
Lariette looked at the two bowls of different fillings, two packets of wonton wrappers which only one was opened, and a small bowl of water to seal the edges. Ruediger also got two large trays, lightly coated with flour to place the wontons.
“Chef Eddy,” Lariette raised her brows, teasing Ruediger, “How do you want these folded? Something fancy? Or the classic ones?”
Ruediger chuckled in helplessness. Taking one of the wrappers, he laid it flat on the wooden board, also coated with flour.

“Which one is the easiest for you? Oh, how do you usually fold your wontons?”
Lariette told Ruediger before that she made wontons a few times in the past. He heard from Madeline that her cooking skill was decent thus, he believed she might not have difficulty with folding wontons.
“I usually do it like this.”
Lariette began demonstrating to Ruediger. She took a scoop of the shrimp filling and wetted the edges before folding the wrapper into a triangle.
Once the filling was sealed, Lariette brought two sharps of the triangle toward the middle. She placed one corner on top of the author and then, pressed to stick them.
“Hehe~ This style always reminds me of a small boat.”
Lariette put the wonton on the tray, lightly tapping the wonton. She smiled sheepishly at Ruediger.
“You’re quick and neat,” Ruediger couldn’t help but praise Lariette. The light in his eyes softened, “I’ll fold it in another way then for the beef filling. You handle the shrimp one, okay?”
“Okay~”
Lariette and Ruediger worked in harmony as they focused on the wontons. As time passed, half of each tray was already filled with folded wontons. Their movements never faltered.
“Haa… I can’t wait to try these,” Lariette sighed softly, feeling her tummy grumbling, “Can we fry some too?”
“Sure,” Ruediger replied quickly. He glanced up from the wonton he was folding to Lariette, “So, we’ll have fried wontons and chili oil wontons for dinner tonight.”
“I’ll send photos to Maddie later. I bet she’ll be jealous,” Lariette said, her eyes glinting mischievously.
Ruediger simply laughed. At the same time, he hoped Madeline wouldn’t suddenly appear at the door, demanding to feast on the wontons.
Now that they were back to the city, he wished to have more private time with her.
Ahem.
