Chapter 124: You’re a Good Fighter
“Be careful, lad! Thank you for the chicken!”
“See you this weekend, Uncle David. Enjoy your dinner.”
Ruediger waved at the cheery Uncle David. The elderly man stood on his porch, watching him leave the cottage where he lived alone after the death of his beloved wife.
Ruediger dropped by Uncle David’s residence today with a pack of roasted chicken and some bread. School ended earlier than usual thus, he decided to visit the elderly man.
The private school Ruediger and Madeline attended was in the middle of Felicia’s townhouse and Uncle David’s home. He took a bus to reach the old man’s neighborhood.
Ruediger still remembered how he started befriending Uncle David. Since then, they had gone fishing together on the old man’s boat. The latter also taught him various practical skills.
Never once did he imagine to be closer to the elderly man yet, he regretted nothing.
‘What should I do tonight, huh? I don’t feel like studying.’
Putting both hands into the pockets of his pants, Ruediger stared at his sneakers as he walked toward the main street. Her shouldered a black bag on his back, holding his school items.
The early spring sun was warm, showering on Ruediger’s figure. The chilly breeze caught the short strands of his crimson locks, swaying his bangs gently over his clear forehead.
Uncle David lived in a relatively quiet neighborhood. Most of the houses here were quite old. Ruediger heard from the former that the majority of its residents were elderly people like him.
‘I smell roses.’
Ruediger slowed his pace, turning his head to one house on the left. Bushes of red roses were reflected in his emerald eyes, their color was so vibrant under the bright sunlight.
Curling up his lips, an idea crossed Ruediger’s mind. There was a florist near Felicia’s townhouse. He might as well drop by to get some flowers for his aunt and Madeline.
A few years had passed from the first time Ruediger began living in Norvonna. It was hard to adjust to the changes but, Felicia’s constant support and Madeline’s friendly playfulness made it easy.
“…who are you?”
The smile on Ruediger’s lips vanished in a split second. Glancing behind his right shoulder, his eyes narrowed into a sharp gaze as he looked at the faces standing behind him.
Five young men, all dressed casually while carrying the unpleasant air of street thugs. The mockery on their faces convinced Ruediger that his assumption was not wrong.
He was still relishing in the beauty of the roses when all of a sudden, he sensed their presence.
One of them, a brunette man in a shabby checkered shirt walked closer to Ruediger. His brown eyes assessed the latter, his lips widening into a smile.
“Wow, don’t you guys see that badge? This boy attends that Valemont!” exclaimed the brunette, referring to the badge embroidered on Ruediger’s navy blue coat.
The brunette’s friends cackled, waves of distasteful laughter. Two men strode toward Ruediger whose expression was tense, mirroring his displeasure.
“His sneakers and bag look hella expensive,” a black-haired man in a T-shirt whistled. He openly looked at Ruediger from head to toe, “But, I don’t see their logos. Are they fakes?”
“Haven’t you heard? Tho, I dunno the truth,” a blond chimed in, glancing from Ruediger to his friend, “Low-key designer items are more expensive.”
Ruediger inwardly shook his head. He didn’t know where all these men came. He hadn’t seen them even once during the previous times he visited Uncle David’s residence.
They might just be passing by this area before they decided to mess with him. Not that he would allow them to.
Spinning on his heels, Ruediger resumed his walk. He didn’t want to waste his time or breath with these street thugs.
“Hey! Who told you to leave?”
The brunette grabbed Ruediger’s shoulder before forcibly turning the teenager around. He snickered at the sight of the crimson-haired teen scowling in disgust.
“Don’t bother me,” Ruediger hissed, his emerald eyes glinting dangerously, “Stay the fuck away.”

“Tsk, language, kid,” the brunette laughed, entertained by Ruediger’s show of resistance, “You’re too tall for your age, huh? Still, you have to respect your elders.”
His heart blazed with fury, Ruediger pursed his lips. He gripped his hands into fists, still hidden inside the pocket of his pants.
It seemed like he had to teach these guys a lesson.
“Let’s drag him there,” said the black-haired man, pointing to a quiet back alley not far from where they were.
“Come here, lad.”
Rolling his eyes, Ruediger decided to follow the men. He said nothing when they started ridiculing him, saying how spineless he was despite looking as if he wanted to fight them.
Ruediger followed the street thugs into the shadowed back alley. It was a narrow and grim space, flanked by towering moss-covered brick walls.
“Give us your wallet,” the brunette crossed one arm behind Ruediger’s back, acting as if he was close to the teenager, “Oh, your watch too. It looks so… ARGH!”
“The hell?”
Ruediger struck a punch at the brunette without anyone anticipating the attack. The man fell on his bum, right into a puddle of dirty water.
What Ruediger did was never foreseen by the thugs.
“What the hell did you do?!” one of the men shouted, he quickly helped the brunette to stand up.
Enraged by the humiliation, the brunette hollered, his voice cracked, “Get him!”
The three men charged toward Ruediger, one of them aiming to grab Ruediger by the collar. The teenager sidestepped, his leg swiftly swung to kick the man’s knee.
“Ouch!”
Ruediger didn’t pause even for a second when the man fell. He continued attacking the thugs, sending them crashing into the wall and the street.
“What the…” the brunette blinked, not believing his eyes, “He’s just a boy! Get him!”
“Arghhhh!”
In the end, all five of the street thugs were defeated unceremoniously. Their combined strength was nothing to the teenager. They groaned in pain, looking ever so pathetic.
“You’re lucky I didn’t break your bones,” muttered Ruediger, his voice tingeing with frost.
Seeing some dust clung to his clothes, Ruediger patted his coat. He walked out of the alley, not intending to spend more time there. The men’s whining resounded from behind.
“You’re a good fighter.”
“…who are you?”
Ruediger hastily paused once he saw a young man, taller than him, standing beside a lamp pole. The man’s brown eyes flickered with admiration as their gazes met.
