Chapter 125: I Won’t Shame My Wife
<.Back to the present, Lumina Spring Apartment.>
“…that’s it?”
Blinking, confusion was reflected in Lariette’s eyes. Her baffled countenance was evident under the bright lights hanging on the balcony.
That was the end of the story?
Shouldn’t there be more?
One corner of Ruediger’s lips rose higher than the other. Mischief glinted in his emerald eyes as he understood what caused such a look on Lariette’s face.
Lariette was totally engrossed in Ruediger’s story about the early years he lived in Norvonna. He only shared the good things, leaving the unsavory ones about his exile out.
Ruediger mentioned how good his days were living with Felicia and Madeline. He also included his unlikely friendship with Uncle David before his chance encounter with Nathaniel.
Picking one of the remaining fried wontons, Ruediger said, “That was the day we first met. As for when we really started being acquaintances, you have to wait until our dinner with your grandpa and Nate. He will tell the rest.”
“Oh…” Lariette pouted, narrowing her eyes at Ruediger, “That was already thrilling. I didn’t expect you guys to meet because he wanted to save you from the thugs.”
According to Ruediger, Nathaniel appeared because he assumed the teenager was in trouble. The man was amazed to see him handling all the hoodlums by himself.
The five street thugs combined were no match for that teenager.
Ruediger and Nathaniel only exchanged a few words before both of them parted ways. None of them foresaw meeting each other not long after.
But, Ruediger purposely held back from revealingĀ Lariette the rest. He said, that story was for Nathaniel to tell.
Lariette couldn’t help but think something more exciting happened during Ruediger and Nathaniel’s second meeting.
Supporting her chin with the back of her hand, Lariette shot Ruediger a meaningful look.
“Well, seems I need to convince Mr. Nathaniel to have dinner with Grandpa soon. So, I agree to the invitation.”
Ruediger covered his mouth, his cheeks puffing from eating the wonton. Swallowing the rest after munching it, he grabbed the glass.
“I’ll tell Nate then. His parents will be happy to meet you,” was what Ruediger said after drinking the chrysanthemum tea.
Lariette laughed in helplessness. She reached for another chili oil wonton, still not full from the ones she had safely eaten.
‘Mr. Nathaniel was the same as Eddy. He moved to Norvonna from Velondia.’
Lariette heard about Nathaniel being a citizen of Velondia from Madeline. Her friend only mentioned it once. The man migrated to Norvonna a few years before Ruediger lived there.
Surely, there must be a story behind it. The question was, was she allowed to know?
Lariette was already glad to hear how Ruediger and Nathaniel met over ten years ago. Whether the men would tell her more in depth or not, it was up to them.
Even after all the plates were empty, Lariette and Ruediger didn’t immediately return inside the apartment. They remained sitting on the balcony, chatting about random things.
The breeze cooled further in the summer night, gently blowing through their crimson and brown locks. Their voices resounded on the balcony, the sound drifted away by the wind.
“You’ll start working tomorrow, right?” asked Lariette while pouring another round of chrysanthemum tea into her glass, “Thankfully, you could extend your time off.”
Ruediger might work remotely but, he didn’t bring his work gear to Azure Bay. He told Lariette that he requested more time off work when they had to stay longer on the island.
Lariette didn’t notice the indecipherable glint in Ruediger’s emerald eyes.
If only she knew what he truly did for work. Well, that story was for another time.

Curling up his lips, Ruediger said jokingly, “Being the big boss’ best friend has its own advantages, you know?”
Scoffing, Lariette threw Ruediger a side-eye, “You should just ask for one year’s leave then.”
Laughter spilled out of Ruediger’s lips upon hearing Lariette’s remark. Arching his brows, he responded, “I still have integrity. I won’t shame my wife by being a crooked man.”
Lariette blinked, her eyelashes fluttering slightly. Ruediger’s words, spoken softly in his deep voice, seemed to cast a heat on her cheeks.
Ruediger calmly sipped the iced tea. The slightly flushed look on Lariette’s face didn’t go unnoticed by him.
She was ever so loveable to him.
Lariette inwardly shook her head, trying to calm herself. Maintaining her eye contact with Ruediger, her response flowed out of her mouth with a slight tremor in her voice.
“Another reason I’m glad to pick you as my husband. A man with many skills. You can even navigate a boat! So, I hope you can impress my colleagues with your baked goods soon.”
Ruediger refrained from laughing at how Lariette tried shifting the subject. Instead of teasing her, he replied confidently, “That’s a sure thing. No need to worry.”
Lariette drifted her eyes away from Ruediger, drinking the remaining tea in her glass. The beverage was cold yet, it didn’t help to chase the lingering heat on her cheeks.
Soon, Lariette and Ruediger finally returned inside the apartment, bringing along the dirty plates, bowls and glasses. She insisted on doing the dishes because he handled most of the cooking.
“You better go and relax now,” said Lariette while pushing Ruediger’s back, trying to get him out of the kitchen, “It’s getting late.”
Ruediger glanced at the wall clock, seeing that the time was still early but, he said nothing. Laughing faintly, he relented.
“Okay. I’ll be in my room now,” Ruediger curled up his lips, his emerald eyes warm under his crimson fringes, “Good night, Lettie. Sleep well.”
“You too,” Lariette nodded, smiling softly, “Good night, Eddy.”
Ruediger waved at Lariette with an easy smile on his lips. She watched him disappear at the intersection leading to where the bedrooms were.
Turning around, Lariette focused on washing the dishes. She stared at the clean water falling into the sink, washing away the bubbles from the ceramics.
Today felt so peaceful which she very appreciated.
Lariette hoped from today on, she wouldn’t be plagued by any trouble coming from the Elsher family.
But… would this peace remain?
