Chapter 126: Who Is this Gentleman?
On Thursday morning, Lariette woke up and got ready for her first meeting at school after being busy the past few weeks. She took a quick shower before changing into a pastel yellow shirt and loose denim pants.
While tying her long hair into a ponytail, Lariette stepped out of her room. Her lips were drawn into a huge grin. As always, delicious scents originating from the kitchen greeted her morning.
“Eddy, good morning.”
Lariette saw Ruediger’s tall figure standing before the coffee machine, in his V-neck shirt and long khaki pants. He glanced behind his shoulder, his crimson locks swaying gently, following his little movements.
“Morning, Lettie,” Ruediger’s lips curved into a smile. Arching his brows, he asked, “Ready for your meeting, en?”
“Hehe, yes.”
Lariette made herself a cup of black tea while Ruediger brought his coffee mug to the dining table. He prepared some savory pancakes for breakfast per her request last night. As for the specific ingredients, she didn’t mind.
“Wow! Spinach pancakes? With smoked salmon and sour cream? Perfect!”
Lariette was elated upon seeing the stacks of green pancakes on her plate. The orange salmon, white sour cream and yellow dill complemented each other, very visually appealing.
Ruediger’s smile softened at the sight of Lariette’s beaming look. He was glad that she generally enjoyed every dish he made so far.
“Dig in. I hope you like it,” Ruediger grabbed his own fork after sitting down, his emerald eyes glinting softly as he continued staring at Lariette.
“I don’t doubt any of your cooking now. Everything is so tasty!”
Lariette quickly sliced through the fluffy green pancakes with a fork, not forgetting the smoked salmon and sour cream as well. As expected, the explosion of flavors inside her mouth was divine.
Lariette didn’t leave anything on the plate once she was done with breakfast. She even scooped the remaining sour cream and dill before drinking her black tea.
“Your meeting is at nine, right?” Ruediger glanced at his wristwatch, seeing the clock turned to eight-thirty, “We should head there now.”
Lariette replied from the sink as she washed the plates, “I’ll go and grab my bag first.”
Ruediger placed the chilled box of mango coconut pudding inside a paper bag before putting the box of lemon blueberry loaf cake on top. He made both yesterday for Lariette’s meeting.
Ruediger carefully thought of what kind of dessert he should make before deciding on these two. He hoped Lariette’s colleagues would enjoy both the pudding and the loaf cake.
“Are you ready?” Ruediger carried the paper bag, glancing at Lariette who had just reappeared with her handbag, “Let’s go.”
“Okay~”
Lariette and Ruediger left the apartment, heading to the public school on foot. He insisted on accompanying her there, even saying he could introduce himself as her husband once they met her colleagues.
Liking the idea, Lariette agreed without another thought.
The golden morning sun bathed the streets, already bustling with people at this hour. The light cast dappled shadows through the trees by the sidewalks.
A light breeze gently carried the scent of blooming summer flowers, harmonizing with the divine aroma coming from a nearby bakery. Echoes of footsteps, indistinct chatters and vehicles’ engines mixed in the air.
Soon, Lariette and Ruediger saw the gate of the public school, followed by the three-story primary building. It stood in the middle of a vast yard, accompanied by several other structures.
Velondia paid greater attention to education over the past decade. Each public school received more than adequate funding from the government. The schools in rural areas were not excluded.
The first person Lariette and Ruediger met was the guard. The middle-aged man was a retired veteran, taking up the job as the security guard of the school.
Lariette often exchanged greetings and small talk with the security guard called Bill. The other teachers were the same. They appreciated his easygoing yet hardworking persona.
“Good morning, Lari! How have you been? Oh? Who is this gentleman?”
Bill, dressed in his guard uniform, looked from Lariette to Ruediger. He had never seen this young teacher bring a man here before.

Was this her rumored boyfriend?
Bill knew some teachers and administration staff were a bunch of gossipers. They sometimes wondered about Lariette whose life was quite a mystery.
They were aware that she had a boyfriend but, they never saw him. The young lady was quite secretive about her life.
Fortunately, none of them was being pushy with the topic.
Smiling, Lariette glanced at Ruediger before introducing the two men to each other.
“Good morning, Bill. This is Ruediger, my husband. Eddy, this is Bill, one of the school guardians.”
Ruediger chuckled upon hearing Lariette’s cheeky remark. At the same time, Bill blinked in confusion, seemingly caught off guard by what she said about the former.
“…husband? Oh! Congratulations! Hahaha! I didn’t expect to hear this but, congrats! This is good news!”
“Thank you. We just got married last week. We only registered at the courthouse tho. Nothing fancy.”
Lariette smiled at Bill. She felt slightly guilty because of the true nature of her relationship with Ruediger but, she quickly dismissed the feeling.
Whether their marriage was a contractual one or not, he was still her legal husband.
“Hello, I’m Ruediger, Lariette’s husband,” Ruediger nodded once at Bill while extending his right hand, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Bill.”
“Likewise, Mr. Ruediger,” Bill smiled, shaking hands with Ruediger.
Ruediger and Bill exchanged a few words before Lariette led the former further inside the school compound. She saw a few of her colleagues looking at them from afar.
“I’ll give some of these to Bill later,” said Lariette, her eyes drifting to the paper bag in Ruediger’s hand, “By the way, the three ladies are my colleagues.”
Ruediger cast a look at the three figures standing near the entrance of the main building. His lips curled up as he noticed the same curiosity on their faces.
Ruediger loved it when Lariette introduced him as her husband to Bill earlier. He knew his joy would amplify once she did the same to her colleagues.
As the husband and wife got nearer to the three ladies, Lariette waved at them, greeting, “Morning, Nora, Phoebe and Bella.”
The ladies greeted Lariette back but, their attention was more on Ruediger. The similar confused look worn by Bill earlier was reflected on their faces.
“Lari, who is this?” asked Nora, her lips smiling sheepishly, “Your boyfriend?”
Phoebe and Bella nodded, showing they shared the same question as Nora. Their reactions lured chuckles out of Lariette’s lips as she glanced at Ruediger.
“Wrong, he’s not my boyfriend,” Lariette shook her head, holding back from laughing, “He’s my husband.”
“Husband?!”
The three ladies hollered at the same time, their eyes flung open.
“O-oh! Look!” Bella suddenly smacked Nora who stood closer to her, “They wear matching wedding bands!”
Lariette almost burst out laughing. Neither she nor Ruediger openly showed their rings but, Bella’s hawk eyes quickly spotted them.
Nora and Phoebe darted their eyes to Lariette’s ring finger, seeing a platinum band with a tiny sapphire stone. They saw a similar ring worn by Ruediger.
They were indeed married!
