Chapter 130: Sports Day Discussion
Back to the middle school…
The teachers returned to their seats after the coffee break. The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee lingered in the meeting room.
A few of them brought along plates of desserts to the meeting table, including Principal Smith.
“Now,” the principal began, his lips curling up softly, “Time to discuss Sports Day.”
Lariette, including a few of the teachers, chuckled upon hearing Principal Smith’s words. All of them knew Sports Day was one of the most anticipated events every year.
Before summer break started, the excited students began asking about it. The date was already set but, the preparations were still underway.
“They’re more excited than usual because we chose to hold it in autumn this year,” said Howard, one of the history teachers, as he referred to the students, “Their parents approved too.”
Howard’s words were welcomed with nods of agreement from his fellow colleagues. Lariette also shared the same thought.
Sports Day was usually held before the summer break. It became some sort of tradition. The other schools also did the same.
The so-called traditional was broken this year when Principal Smith decided to push it to autumn. Both the teachers and the students alike welcomed the new change, including the parents.
During Sports Day, parents and guardians could come to cheer on the students. Some of the games involved the cooperation between the adults and the children.
“Howard’s right,” Benjamin chimed in. He was a PE teacher, “The weather will be much more pleasant in autumn. We also don’t have to worry about them getting overheated.”
Bella clapped her hands, “Don’t forget the scenery! Our school has a good view during autumn. The children will like it more for sure!”
Principal Smith glanced at his notes. He shook his head in helplessness as he said, “Then, time to discuss the event lineup. We’ll have the usual popular sports but, does anyone have new ideas?”
Relays and tugs-of-war would always be on the list. Still, Principal Smith wondered if his subordinates would introduce new and fun games for Sports Day this year.
The teachers commenced another round of discussions. No one shied away from voicing their thoughts. The meeting room was buzzing with their conversations.
At the same time, the teachers divided themselves into smaller groups. Each of them had their own tasks, including Lariette.
“Lari! We get a fun part!”
“Haha! Yes! I can’t wait for it!”
Nora’s excitement was palpable, earning a smile from Lariette. Both of them, including Howard, were assigned to oversee the stalls.
Clubs were allowed to open a stall each, mostly handled by the older students. While the students tried raising funds for their clubs, they got to showcase their creativity and teamwork.
Last year, another group of teachers oversaw the stalls and the participating clubs. Most of the students managed to sell out the items they traded. They also happily gushed over their experience in trading.
Once all the role-assigning was done, Principal Smith announced they would adjourn the meeting for today. He slowly stood up from his seat. His white hair glistened under the sunlight streaming through the glass windows.
“You guys can start discussing your tasks with each other. We’ll have the next Sports Day meeting at another time. Oh, I haven’t announced.”
Principal Smith’s last remark intrigued the rest of the teachers. All eyes focused on him, wondering what the older man had to say.
“We’ll have a new teacher join us after summer break. He’s Juliana’s replacement. Because he’s currently abroad, we won’t get to meet him until later.”
“Oh? That’s in less than two weeks.”
“I wonder how Juliana has been doing. We’ll have her replacement soon, huh?”
Lariette hummed softly upon hearing her former colleague’s name.
Juliana was a language teacher like her, a senior of the faculty. She moved to another city before summer break began, having to relocate because of her husband’s new work.

‘He? I wonder who.’
Lariette hoped the new teacher was pleasant to get along with. She was sad to see Juliana leaving but, she still wished her for the best.
“Okay, you all can go home now,” Principal Smith waved his hand. He looked around the room before his eyes landed on Lariette.
“Yes, Mr. Lawrence?” asked Lariette, noticing the look given by the principal.
“Well… can I take some puddings and cakes home?”
Principal Smith’s question elicited chuckles from Lariette before a ripple of laughter from the other teachers echoed in the meeting room.
“You can, Mr. Lawrence,” Lariette smiled in helplessness, “I’m glad that you enjoy the desserts.”
“Lawrence, have you forgotten what your doctor said about your blood sugar?” Benjamin, one of the older teachers chimed in, his tone teasing, “Don’t let him, or worse, Sophia catch you.”
Sophia was Principal Smith’s wife. She often dropped by the school, sending home-cooked lunch for her husband while having a meal together.
“Haha… I won’t take that many,” Principal Smith laughed awkwardly, scratching his wrinkly cheek. His response garnered more laughter from the rest.
Soon, everyone left the meeting room. Some walked straight to the main gate, wanting to go home while a few remained in school.
Lariette texted Ruediger after leaving the meeting room. Glancing at her wristwatch, she saw the clock had almost struck one in the afternoon.
‘I better go to my desk first.’
Spinning on her heels, Lariette headed to the teachers’ lounge. She had a few things she wanted to bring back to the apartment.
“Lari, not going home yet?”
A familiar voice called Lariette when she was writing something in her cubicle. Looking up, her eyes met Emily, one of her colleagues in the language faculty.
Smiling, Lariette replied, “I’m waiting for my husband. He should be here soon.”
That particular word seemed to flow easier from her mouth now.
“Aww~ How romantic,” Emily chuckled, her eyes sparkling with delight over Lariette’s response, “I only saw him from afar. He’s a handsome lad, isn’t he? You two are a perfect match.”
Lariette’s lips melted into a softer smile. She felt the heart swirling from her cheeks.
“Thank you, Emily. I’ll introduce him to you next time.”
Lariette and Emily exchanged a few more words before the latter finally left. Not long after, she received a text from Ruediger, saying he had arrived.
Bringing the disposable food box containing the portion for Bill and his colleagues at the guard post, Lariette quickly went downstairs.
She couldn’t wait to tell him how much everyone coveted his desserts. Somehow, she wished to see how his face beamed, or even blushed once she told him.
