Chapter 137: Of Yogurt Panna Cotta and Berries Compote
Ruediger wasn’t aware of how sleepless Nathaniel’s night was. He woke up the next morning in a happier mood, considering how well the previous night’s dinner was.
But, Ruediger’s joy faded slightly as he wondered what would happen in the afternoon later.
Lariette invited Declan and Rafael to join them having lunch with Chairman Delaney. Ruediger believed whatever the two men had to say, it might be unpleasant.
‘Anyway, Declan is capable. I’ll take over if he screws up.’
Ruediger initially entertained the idea of having his men discreetly follow Declan’s subordinates during the investigation. He dismissed the thought after weighing it further.
Thus, Ruediger had been silently waiting for the day Declan came forward with the investigation results. His wait most likely would end this afternoon.
Lariette and Ruediger planned to go early to Chairman Delaney’s residence. They wanted to spend some time with the elderly man before lunchtime arrived.
“I can’t wait to have it again.”
Lariette’s remark elicited laughter from Ruediger as he drove the truck down the expressway. Briefly turning to look at her, he smiled in helplessness.
“You already had one this morning,” Ruediger teasingly reminded Lariette, his focus returned to the road ahead, “There are some in the fridge too.”
“One isn’t enough,” replied Lariette as if stating a very truthful fact. Her response made Ruediger laugh more.
After returning from Seacastle last night, Ruediger immediately headed to the kitchen. He wanted to make some yogurt panna cotta for Chairman Delaney. Making it earlier allowed a longer chilling time in the fridge.
In the morning, Ruediger prepared some compote from strawberries and blueberries. Lariette helped herself to one cup of panna cotta after breakfast.
“Get one or two later,” Ruediger said, his voice still lacing with laughter, “I substituted sugar with monk fruit sweetener. The yogurt should make it healthier than the usual ones too.”
Chairman Delaney had a sweet tooth but, his doctor forbade him from consuming desserts without any caution. Ruediger made the panna cotta with the elderly man’s health in mind.
“Grandpa will be so happy,” Lariette mused. Her eyes landed on Ruediger’s side profile, “You’re being considerate to him.”
Glancing at Lariette, Ruediger simply smiled. The emerald orbs under his crimson fringes glinted softly.
Lariette and Ruediger arrived slightly before eleven. Chairman Delaney merrily welcomed them at the front door. He had been waiting for them since he received his granddaughter’s departure message.
“Eddy, how about playing chess before lunch?”
Chairman Delaney’s question earned laughter from both Ruediger and Lariette. They had just stepped inside the lounge when the elderly man asked.
“Grandpa, you think of chess whenever you see Eddy now?” Lariette playfully chided Chairman Delaney, “You haven’t asked about me yet.”
“Hahaha! Forgive me, my dear,” Chairman Delaney burst out laughing. He hugged Lariette sideways, playing along, “So, how are you, my dear granddaughter? Everything’s good?”
Ruediger smiled as he watched Lariette and Chairman Delaney bantering. The housekeeper, Helga also witnessed the scene as she brought chilled mineral water for them.
Soon, the soft clinking of chess pieces echoed in the lounge as Ruediger and Chairman Delaney faced each other. The polished wooden board was placed on the coffee table between them.
Chairman Delaney’s eyes scanned the board with quiet intensity. Every move he made previously showed the weight of his experience.
Opposite him, Ruediger leaned slightly while placing his elbows on his knees. He interlinked his fingers together, resting his chin on it as he contemplated his next move.
“Your faces are the same now,” Lariette spoke, her voice breaking the silence between the two men, “So serious.”
Ruediger smirked while Chairman Delaney chuckled. They lifted their eyes from the chess board, looking at Lariette who nestled comfortably on a rattan chair.
“It means we’re so focused on this, my dear,” Chairman Delaney replied.
Ruediger nodded, sharing the same point as the elderly man. Arching his brows, he asked teasingly, “Who do you think will win, Lettie?”

Lariette shifted her sapphire eyes from Ruediger to Chairman Delaney repeatedly. A hint of a playful smile was evident on her lips.
“I’ll answer once I hear checkmate from any one of you.”
Ruediger and Chairman Delaney burst into giggles, amused by Lariette’s answer. She pursed her lips in an attempt to hold back from laughing as well.
The two men resumed playing, once again pouring their focus on the chess board. Lariette raised her phone, silently taking a photo of Ruediger and Chairman Delaney. She quickly sent it to Madeline.

[Lariette: Playing chess again 🤣]
[Lariette: Grandpa immediately asked Eddy to play it once we arrived lol]
Madeline couldn’t join lunch because she had a meeting with her staff at the cafe today.
Suit & Tie planned to throw an event soon. Most likely they needed to finalize the details before advertising it.
No matter what kind of event it was, Lariette couldn’t wait for it. She believed it would be as entertaining as the previous ones.
After sending the messages to Madeline, Lariette returned her gaze to Ruediger and Chairman Delaney. Her ears caught the echoes of footsteps coming from the hallway.
“Grandpa.”
The familiar man’s voice turned Lariette’s eyes to the sound. Chairman Delaney and Ruediger also did the same, looking to where the voice came from.
Declan and Rafael appeared, standing straight near the entrance of the lounge. Both of them were in their casual outfits today.
“Dec and Ray, when did you arrive?” Chairman Delaney raised his brows, “Come and sit.”
The elderly man was aware of Declan’s true intention of coming here today. His grandson told him that he had something to reveal in front of Lariette.
“We’ve just arrived, Grandpa,” Ray replied. He nodded at Lariette and Ruediger, greeting them, “Hello, Lari and Mr. Ruediger.”
Lariette and Ruediger simply nodded in response, while verbally acknowledging their presence. Declan and Rafael quietly occupied the vacant two-seater couch.
“We’ll have lunch soon,” Chairman Delaney glanced at Declan and Rafael before looking at the wall clock, “First, let me finish this round.”
Without wasting time, Chairman Delaney shifted his eyes to the chess board once again. Declan and Rafael blankly stared at their grandfather, knowing how picky he was with his opponent.
He willingly played with Lariette’s new husband.
