Chapter 155: This Is a Work of Art!
If he could do it, he would certainly do so.
Ruediger closed his eyes, trying to calm the turbulent waves within him. Seeing Lariette taste the filling made him wonder how sweet it was if he could kiss her now.
The desires often took over his heart but, he knew he had to stop.
Unaware of what was on Ruediger’s mind, Lariette savored the flavor of the blueberry walnut filling. Her eyelashes fluttered the moment the mixture hit her tongue.
The sweet and tart blueberries, the warmth of cinnamon, the hint of lemon and the crunch of the toasted walnuts seamlessly harmonized with each other.
Its scent was also divine, making the mixture more delicious. The fragrance of warm berries and toasted walnuts rose in the air.
Swallowing the filling, Lariette pressed her lips together. She still savored the lingering taste.
“Eddy, it’s so delicious! It’s… are you okay?”
Lariette had just looked up at Ruediger, only to see his face suddenly tensed up. A faint redness also was cast on his cheeks.
“Nothing. It’s quite hot today,” Ruediger hurriedly shook his head. His crimson fringes swayed over his forehead. He quickly asked, “Anyway, do you like it? The taste is good?”
“Yes,” Lariette nodded, her face beaming, “I can’t wait to try the pie soon.”
“Good. The fun part is latticing.”
Retrieving the spoon, Ruediger turned back to his work. He silently hoped his face and behavior didn’t give away how much in a frenzy his heart was now.
Lariette returned to being a spectator by Ruediger’s side. She watched him spoon the glossy filling into the crust, leveling it gently with the back of the spoon.
‘What will he do with the pink dough? For latticing?’
Lariette couldn’t help but think about that because Ruediger only used the golden one for the pie base. Her assumption came true within minutes.
Standing before the kitchen island, Ruediger rolled out both doughs before cutting them into even strips. He carefully arranged the strips over the rich blueberry filling, alternating the colors.
“Wow… Eddy, that’s so cute.”
Lariette’s eyes widened slightly. She admired how Ruediger created a lovely pattern over the filling. The golden and pinkish-purple doughs contrasted beautifully.
“I’m not finished yet,” said Ruediger while glancing at Larriete. His lips curved into a smile.
Ruediger twisted a few extra strips into braids before moving to the remaining dough. Under Lariette’s admirable gaze, he crafted flowers and butterflies from them.
“…Eddy.”
Without looking at Lariette, Ruediger was aware of the weight of admiration in her eyes. He carefully pressed the flowers and butterflies along the edges of the crust.
“What do you think?”
Ruediger stepped back, allowing Lariette to get a clearer view of his work. He held back from smiling too eagerly once her sparkling eyes stared at him in full admiration.
“This is art! Can I take some photos?”
“Haha, you can.”
Lariette quickly fished out the phone from the pocket of her pants. She moved closer to the pie, carefully capturing a few photos.
This was a work of art! Aaa! She couldn’t wait to see the finished product next!

Ruediger simply watched Lariette, joy flooding his heart. He was glad to see her being excited with the pie’s appearance. That was his intention once he saw the original photos on the Internet.
“What’s next?” Lariette took a step back, looking at Ruediger while still holding the phone, “Apply the egg wash, en?”
“Yup. Then, we can bake it.”
Ruediger lightly brushed the egg wash over the crust. The liquid would give the pie a beautiful golden color with a slight sheen.
Lariette trailed behind Ruediger when he brought the pie away, sliding it into the preheated oven. After setting the timer, he turned behind his shoulder, smiling at Lariette.
“It won’t be ready soon. Also, it’s better to cool the pie down first before cutting it.”
Lariette mused, agreeing with Ruediger, “Perfect for tea time later. Let’s have it with the tea I cold brewed.”
Intending to make use of the dried lavender buds and hibiscus petals she got from Andrea, Lariette cold brewed some in a jug. She left it in the fridge since this morning.
“That’s a good match with the pie,” Ruediger nodded with a smile of approval, “Oh, do you want lunch?”
“I don’t want anything for lunch. Eddy, you should rest once the pie is done.”
Lariette knew Ruediger wouldn’t simply leave the pie like that.
He said he set the temperature higher in the beginning. It was to set the crust quickly, including to create a crisp and flaky texture. Then, he would lower it to prevent over-browning.
As the heat swirled inside the oven, the scent of melted butter, sweet fruits and toasted walnuts wafted in the air. Lariette almost drooled from how yummy the scent was alone.
“I might take some nap,” Ruediger nodded. Untying the apron straps behind his waist, he waved one hand, “Shoo now. Lest you’ll flood this kitchen with your drooling.”
“You’re shooing me?” Lariette purposely widened her eyes, glaring at Ruediger before she shrugged, “Well, you have a point tho.”
“Hahaha!”
Lariette shot Ruediger a look before turning around. She didn’t forget to take off the apron, hanging it back on the hook. She still heard his hearty laughter as she left the kitchen.
Despite not being the one who cleaned the apartment and made the pie next, Lariette wanted to have a quick shower. She disliked the feeling of sweat clinging to her.
‘Hehe~ I can’t wait to try the pie.’
Lariette’s mind was occupied by the pie baking in the oven as cold water cascaded down her skin, washing away the sweat and cooling her body in general. She kept her hair in a high bun, not wanting to dampen the locks.
As Lariette continued standing under the shower head, her thoughts drifted from the pie to Ruediger. His emerald eyes gleamed with focus as he worked the dough with precision.
Truly, he was an admirable man. Not only from his attractive looks but, also his charming qualities.
There was so much time before their contract ended.
Would they be good friends if they remained in a decent relationship during the entire year?
Or, would he choose to be reclusive again?
‘…I shouldn’t think of that.’
Blinking, Lariette shook her head. She cupped her face, feeling the heat emanating from her cheeks. She silently watched the water pooling around her feet.
As the thought of Ruediger lingered in Lariette’s mind, what might happen within the Elsher family slipped out of her attention.
