Chapter 156: Sweet Karma
Stepping out of the shower while raking her fingers through her hair, Lariette realized her phone was vibrating on the bed. She put it on silent mode previously.
‘Who is it?’
Someone was calling her. Lariette’s eyes caught a brief glimpse of Declan’s name on the screen before the call ended.
Raising her brows, Lariette muttered to herself, “Is it about that?”
Lariette tightened the bathrobe sash around her waist as she headed to the bed, her steps slow. The remaining droplets of water clung to her skin, chilled from the cold shower.
Lariette heard nothing significant from the outside but, the buttery scent of the pie being baked slipped through the thin gap of the door. Ruediger was most likely still in the kitchen.
She chuckled as she imagined how good the pastry would taste. Surely, his craft wouldn’t disappoint her.
‘Let’s check this first.’
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Lariette grabbed her phone. She quickly checked the notification bar, propping one elbow on her thigh.
Declan called Lariette twice. Despite failing to reach her, he didn’t leave any voicemail. She quickly guessed he might want to talk about Leon today.
‘Has he been arrested?’
Lariette didn’t know how law enforcement worked, but she still hoped that Leon wouldn’t roam freely outside. That man was a menace, an obsessive freak.
As much as Lariette disliked Stephanie, the latter or anyone else shouldn’t be coerced into a marriage they didn’t want.
Ha.
Lariette scoffed. This was actually ironic considering Stephanie tried to force her to marry the cheating scumbag just a few weeks ago, only for Stephanie to be in the same situation.
Was this what people called sweet karma?
‘The fiance she held so highly shamed her on their wedding day and now, this. Who told her to cheat?’
Lariette believed Stephanie would try to get Matthias back despite the treachery she had committed against him. Still, it would be a futile attempt.
No matter how much Stephanie wanted Matthias back or claimed how remorseful she was, Lariette believed the Silvera heir wouldn’t return to Stephanie.
Unless he was a complete moron.
Anyway, Declan and Chairman Delaney wouldn’t let Leon force Stephanie into this marriage. Both sides went against him at the same time with crucial evidence, leaving little chance for the man to retaliate.
Ding! Ding!
Lariette’s phone rang twice, notifying her of new unread messages. Once again Declan’s name appeared on the screen. His texts were long, unable to be fully displayed by the notification bar.
Tapping on the screen, Lariette’s gaze fell on the text Declan had just sent.
[Declan: We’ve filed reports over Leon and his accomplices. Our lawyers will work together with the police. The bodyguards are watching him now. We haven’t gotten an arrest warrant.]
[Declan: You don’t have to go to court if you don’t want it. We have plenty of ways to handle the men who attacked you. They didn’t exactly keep their old crimes secret.]
Curling up her lips, Lariette sneered. She understood what Declan meant.
The two men, Joseph Brooks and Thomas Morgan, certainly did more heinous things in the past. Whether they committed the crimes under the drug’s influence or not, it didn’t matter.
Lariette believed Declan’s men would uncover what Joseph and Thomas tried to hide long before the police did. If this would lead to no involvement from her side, she didn’t mind.

Pressing her thumb on the screen, Lariette only sent Declan a short reply.
[Lariette: Okay]
No asking for more details about today’s events.
No asking about the pitiful Stephanie.
Tossing the phone to the bed, Lariette rose to her feet. She couldn’t help but feel a little sleepy. Getting a quick nap before having a wonderful tea time with Ruediger sounded good.
‘Hopefully, it’ll be less chaotic soon. I want to see Grandma.’
Lariette lay on the bed after changing into a fresh set of clothes. She couldn’t help but think of her trip to Moonville Village soon with Ruediger.
Lariette had intended to visit Mrs. Evans’ grave before the summer break ended but, many things happened within a short time. Unwilling to just let the chance go, she brought it to Ruediger last Saturday.
‘I’ll get to introduce him to Grandma.’
Smiling faintly, Lariette closed her eyes. Her heart yearned to share the exciting things that happened in her life with her dear grandmother.
Despite not sharing the same blood, Mrs. Evans was the grandmother Lariette treasured. The old lady’s warmth was comforting, helping to ease her worried mind.
One of Lariette’s dreams was to bring Mrs. Evans to live together with her once she was more established in the Elsher family. But… her dear grandmother passed away before she could fulfill it.
Fortunately, Chairman Delaney’s assistance helped in getting Mrs. Evans the best of hospice care before the day she breathed her last.
Not long after Lariette slept soundly, Ruediger had just taken the pie out of the oven. He carefully placed the buttery sweet pastry on a wire rack before covering it with a lid.
‘It’ll be perfect for tea time later.’
After making sure the kitchen was tidy, Ruediger headed to his bedroom. The alluring scent of the pie clung to him.
Ruediger wanted to get a cold shower before resting. He had been busy since the early morning. Untying his hair, his crimson locks fell freely below his broad shoulders.
‘Any news about that man?’
Before walking inside the bedroom, Ruediger glanced at Lariette’s closed door. Perhaps, Declan had relayed the latest news about Leon to her.
Either way, Ruediger believed Lariette refused to give more attention than necessary to that case. Leon and Stephanie had bothered her enough during their trip to the island.
Ding! Ding!
His phone rang when Ruediger had just taken off his shirt. With only his sweatpants on, he extended his arm, grabbing the phone from the bedside table.
The message came from Nathaniel, including a few photos of… gifts?
A mountain pile of gifts in various sizes and shapes of boxes.
[Nate: What do you think? Should I get more?]
“…Ha… Hahaha!”
The messages turned Ruediger speechless before helpless laughter slipped out of his mouth.
Without any need for a photo, Ruediger could tell how nervous Nathaniel was right now.
He was going to meet his recently discovered daughter tomorrow!
