Chapter 162: The Sheer Happiness in Her Eyes
Throughout their meal, Nathaniel conversed with Elsie and Lorianne. He wanted to know more about their lives. The ambiance in the private dining room was better.
The topic shifted to Lorianne’s new kindergarten. It came up because the little one happily mentioned it. Then, Elsie briefed Nathaniel about the kindergarten.
“Lorrie will start there next week. The place is just ten minutes from our current residence. I’ll give you the details later.”
The little one bobbed her head up and down, beaming at the mention of her new school.
“The kindy is so cute, Daddy. I saw bunny statues in the garden. They’re a family!”
Seeing the evident joy on Lorianne’s face, Elsie put down her fork and knife. She reached for her phone inside the bag. After a few taps on the screen, she pushed the phone to Nathaniel.
“These photos were from our visit last week,” Elsie explained. She glanced at Lorianne, “Lorrie, why don’t you tell your daddy more about your new kindy?”
“Hehe, okay!”
Swinging her short legs under the table, Lorianne happily chatted about the kindergarten. She also pointed out a few things in the photos.
Nathaniel couldn’t deny how excited Lorianne looked in the photos. She carried a pink backpack during her visit to the kindergarten. Her soft blond hair was tied into a high ponytail.
“The pumpkin carriage is pink and white. Hehe~ I love it! It’s like in Cinderella story.”
“Daddy, do you see the bunny family? This is Papa Bunny, this is Mama Bunny and this is Baby Bunny.”
“The teachers are so nice. They give me candies. Daddy, do you like candies?”
Lorianne’s chatters filled the air of the private dining room. She told Nathaniel everything that she liked about the kindergarten, also quickly answering his questions.
Curling up his lips, Nathaniel nodded. His gaze on Lorianne’s face softened, “Yes. I like candies. What’s your favorite, Lorrie? How about chocolates?”
“I loveee everything! Grandpa and Grandma gave me strawberry candies and chocolate before Mommy and I left.”
Without asking, Nathaniel knew Lorianne was referring to Mr. and Mrs. Winslow. From how merrily she sounded, she seemed to have a good relationship with them.
Nathaniel made a mental note to ask Elsie about the Winslows later. He just needed to find the right time. For now, his focus was on Lorianne.
“Don’t forget to eat, Lorrie,” Elsie smiled in helplessness. Her eyes drifted from Lorianne’s plate to her face, “Or, are you full already?”
Lorianne was not a picky eater. She ate almost everything, except for spicy food. She also loved vegetables, usually carrots, tomatoes and zucchini.
“I’m still hungry,” Lorianne smiled sheepishly, her chubby cheeks pinkening, “I will eat again, Mommy.”
Lorianne resumed eating. Nathaniel handed the phone back to Elsie before doing the same. He quietly chewed the bite of food.
After some time, Lorianne forked into a chicken piece before glancing at Nathaniel. Her action, albeit minor, didn’t go unnoticed by him.
Nathaniel arched his brows, asking softly after swallowing his food, “Do you need anything, Lorrie?”
As always, Elsie watched Nathaniel and Lorianne’s interaction without commenting much. She silently chewed her food, also wondering what the little one wanted to do.
Lorianne tilted her head, staring at Nathaniel openly. When she replied, her voice had a hint of caution, “Daddy, do you like chicken?”
Nathaniel blinked, never expecting that question from Lorianne. He glanced at his plate of grilled chicken. Half of it had been eaten by him.
“I do,” Nathaniel nodded before he quickly reiterated, “I like chicken. Lorrie, do you like chicken too?”
“Hehe~ I like chicken so much. Daddy, here!”
Lorianne held the fork up to Nathaniel, clearly intending to feed him the chicken she speared. Her brown eyes glimmered with anticipation as she waited for her daddy to open his mouth.

Nathaniel hesitated for a second, his chest tightened at the casual way Lorianne acted with him. Opening his mouth, he bit the chicken piece and chewed it thoughtfully.
This should be a simple act of a daughter sharing her food with her father but, this meant so much more to Nathaniel. Gratitude and relief flooded his heart because of Lorianne’s willingness to become closer to him.
“It’s tasty, Lorrie. Very delicious.”
Somehow, this particular chicken piece was more delicious than the ones Nathaniel had eaten. He wondered if this was due to the sheer happiness in Lorianne’s eyes.
Glancing at the fruit plate, Nathaniel asked Lorianne, his voice careful, “Lorrie, do you want the apple? I will feed you.”
The fruit plate was mostly untouched. Slices of red apples, strawberries and kiwis were arranged neatly on the plate.
Her eyes flung open, Lorrie bobbed her head up and down again, resembling a little chick pecking grain. Her tone rose higher as she excitedly exclaimed, “Daddy, I want strawberry too.”
“Hehe, of course.”
Nathaniel felt his fingers shiver as he reached for the fruit plate. Using the small fork, he pierced through the apple slices before bringing it to Lorianne’s lips.
“Careful, Lorrie,” Nathaniel frowned slightly, couldn’t help but worry about the sharp fork also if the slice was too big for Lorianne, “Take a small bite. Ah, let me cut this first.”
“Daddy, Lorrie can eat,” Lorianne shook her head before opening her mouth wide, “Ahhh.”
“But… what if you choke?”
Elsie chuckled once she heard Nathaniel’s question. She gently interjected, “Niel, don’t worry too much. You don’t need to cut the apple.”
“…okay.”
The heat emanated from Nathaniel’s cheeks. Smiling sheepishly, he let Lorianne take a bite of the apple slice.
“Yum! Tasty!”
Thump.
Nathaniel swore his heart suspended beating for a second when Lorianne chirped how yummy the apple was. Pursing his lips, he wondered if the gush of warmth within him was a sign of pure bliss.
‘No. I shouldn’t cry again.’
“L-Lorrie… You want strawberry next, en?”
“Um! Um!”
Still chewing the apple, Lorianne nodded eagerly. Nathaniel laughed soundlessly, tears pricking his eyes as he pierced the strawberry slice.
Ah… He was so happy.
He hadn’t been this happy for over five years.
Unconsciously tightening his grip on the fork, Nathaniel swore he wouldn’t ever lose his family again.
