Chapter 165: Both of Us Want the Best for Her
Nestling in Nathaniel’s arms, the little Lorianne slept deeply. As if she was dreaming of a castle of yummy food, she smacked her lips and mumbled a few food names.
Lorianne’s antics drew a helpless smile on Nathaniel’s lips. His heart swelled with quiet happiness just from cradling the sleeping little one.
The gentle sun rays streamed through the rustling leaves above, casting light and shadows on Lorianne’s face. Nathaniel hovered his other hand, trying to block the glare from disturbing her sleep.
She was truly an angel, born by a goddess—the one holding his heart.
Tearing his eyes away from Lorianne, Nathaniel looked at Elsie beside him. There was quite a space between them. He hesitated for a moment before carefully asking her about something.
“Lorrie… she likes anything princessy, doesn’t she?”
Elsie arched her brows slightly, thinking the question was quite random. Still, she liked knowing Nathaniel was eager to learn more about Lorianne.
“She does. She loves anything about the princesses in fairy tales. The demure and also the warrior princesses.”
Lorianne was an energetic child. She loved the pink color, also cute items but, she didn’t mind getting dirty by rolling in the mud or trying to catch a chick in the ranch.
The Winslows owned a ranch in their countryside home. Lorianne enjoyed following Mr. Winslow riding the horse, feeding the livestock with Mrs. Winslow and also running around the field.
Elsie let Lorianne freely explore everything she desired as long as it was not too dangerous. The little one might cry at getting cuts but, her spirit usually returned soon after.
“All princesses, huh?”
Nathaniel nodded once as he listened to Elsie, murmuring under his breath. Lorianne’s photos and videos evidently showed the little one’s preferences.
After returning from the flower field the other day, a few things crossed Nathaniel’s mind. Most of them were related to bonding with Lorianne.
Despite knowing Elsie wouldn’t outrightly reject his idea, doubts still nagged at the back of Nathaniel’s mind. He racked his brain, trying to rearrange his words before voicing them.
Elsie quietly stared at Nathaniel, seeing hesitation and worry on his face. Her mind told her that this most likely would be related to Lorianne.
What would it be?
Elsie refrained from asking, understanding if Nathaniel had a lot of concerns. The image of him crying silently while hugging the sobbing Lorianne in the restaurant was still vivid in her mind.
Hmm… Should she give him a nudge later? She just didn’t want him to beat himself later for being hesitant.
“I have something… to ask.”
Elsie’s train of thought was interrupted by Nathaniel. His voice was low, having a hint of uncertainty. Still, the tense look in his brown eyes was mixed with hope.
“What is it, Niel?” Elsie replied, her smile softening, “Is it about Lorrie?”
“Yes.”
Nathaniel exhaled a sigh. Looking away from Elsie, he glanced at the sleeping Lorianne. The little one was deep in her slumber, seemingly unaware of what was happening around her.
“I want to invite you and Lorrie to my place,” Nathaniel began, still sounding cautious despite the familiar smile on Elsie’s face, “And… I’ve been thinking of renovating one of the rooms for her.”
Nathaniel’s meaning was clear. This was one of his attempts to form a closer bond with Lorianne. By renovating a room to her preferences, he hoped that she would feel welcomed staying at the villa.
Elsie’s smile didn’t falter. She had been anticipating such a request from Nathaniel. Also, this arrangement was normal for children between two separated parents.
Nathaniel had informed Elsie where his residence was, including giving her his address and the location on the map. He also sent her some photos, not forgetting the pictures of the scenic lavender garden surrounding the villa.
Elsie knew Nathaniel currently lived at a cliffside villa in Seacastle with Tristan, the son of his adopted parents’ long-time employees. She had known the former for a few years already, when Tristan was still a young teenager.
“It’s a good idea,” Elsie replied after a period of silence. Shifting her eyes from Nathaniel to the sleeping Lorianne, she resumed, “Lorrie will be so happy. She has been talking about going to your place.”

Elsie remembered the photos sent by Nathaniel. She admitted the villa looked pleasant to be live in, but her attention was drawn to the surrounding lavender garden. She almost didn’t believe her eyes the first time she saw it.
Without having to ask Nathaniel, Elsie was aware of why he opted for a lavender garden among the countless flower species. He chose the purple flowers because of her.
Even after years, even after how she left, he still had her in his mind.
Inwardly shaking her head, Elsie put the thoughts about her and Nathaniel to the back of her mind. She shifted her attention back to Lorianne, understanding it was more crucial for them.
“We can discuss the arrangements more in-depth later. Feel free to tell me your opinions. I believe both of us only want the best for Lorrie.”
The lightheartedness in Elsie’s voice, including the way she looked at him, stirred something in Nathaniel’s heart. Nodding twice, a small smile curved on his lips.
“Yes. I’ll prepare Lorrie’s room in the meantime,” Nathaniel replied, another wave of relief flooding his heart. He added softly, “Thank you, Elsie.”
Elsie returned Nathaniel’s smile, her response gentle, “I know Lorrie can’t wait to see her room in your house. Her daddy is so considerate of her. How could she not be happy?”
“…”
Nathaniel had to lower his eyes from Elsie’s serene gaze, feeling his heart flutter inside before the heartbeat quickened more. He simply nodded while sweeping his gaze on the sleeping Lorianne.
Nathaniel tightened his hold around Lorianne’s tiny figure. He silently hoped that the little one wouldn’t wake up from how loud his heartbeat was.
Elsie held back from laughing. Nathaniel’s body language, including his reddening ear tips became the tell-tale signs of him being shy.
