Chapter 219: Courting You in Our New Beginning
“…sorry, I didn’t mean to… make your shirt damp.”

Elsie pulled away from Nathaniel after some time, her green eyes had the traces of red. The man’s soft chuckles echoed above her head as she stared at the wet spots on his pajama shirt.

This was… quite embarrassing.

Elsie chewed her lower lip. She kept her head low, too shy to look at Nathaniel, whose gentle laughter tickled her heart.

“You know that you don’t have to worry about such a thing,” said Nathaniel, his voice having the hint of tenderness that he reserved for Elsie only.

Elsie replied nothing. She couldn’t help but feel ashamed for crying like this again in Nathaniel’s arms, like the one time back in the flower garden a few weeks ago.

Nathaniel’s lips quirked into a smile. He placed a palm on one side of Elsie’s face, gently pressing his thumb under her eye. The warmth of her remaining tears seeped into his skin.

A newfound relief flooded Nathaniel’s heart upon reaching the same stance as Elsie. He knew that they still had so many things to talk about, but he believed they would be alright.

Because they would be together again from now on.

“…I need some water.”

“Oh! Drink some.”

Nathaniel hurriedly grabbed the glass of water once Elsie mentioned it. He also pulled some tissues from the box, carefully wiping her tear-streaked face.

“Niel… I want to ask…” Elsie looked at Nathaniel, her eyes having the lingering uncertainty, and so did her voice, “We’ve agreed to start again, but… can we take things slowly?”

Taking this step was crucial to both Elsie and Nathaniel. Still, their interpretation of getting together again might be different. She needed to voice her requests and opinions so that they would find a middle ground.

The light in Nathaniel’s eyes softened at the sight of Elsie’s cautious but hopeful look. Putting the crumpled balls of tissues away, he gave her his full attention.

“Does it mean I can court you from the beginning? Asking you out for dinner dates, giving you flowers, strolling in the parks, and sending memes to you?”

Elsie blinked. Unable to help herself, she scoffed, her right fist meeting Nathaniel’s chest. Her action barely left an impact, earning laughter from him.

“You did all those even when we’re already together, not only when we’re just started dating,” Elsie pointed out, bringing up the days in the past.

More chuckles rolled out from Nathaniel’s mouth, signifying how lighthearted he was right now. He said teasingly, “Still, you liked them. Hehe, I still remember you scolding me because I took so long to confess.”

Elsie narrowed her eyes, purposely giving Nathaniel a knowing look. The man laughed again, the sound chased the lingering tension in the air.

“What do you think, Elsie?” Nathaniel asked softly after he ceased laughing. Tilting his head, he locked his gaze on her, “It’s different this time. We have our dear Lorianne with us.”

Nathaniel’s last sentence reminded Elsie of the same thing she was concerned about. Starting over again with him wouldn’t be easy because not everything would be sunshine and rainbows.

“Lorrie has warmed up to you, Niel, but… I know she has her fears. She’s afraid of losing you again, her father.”

Before meeting Nathaniel, Lorianne often asked Elsie about her biological father. The little one’s questions were simple thus, she didn’t have enough difficulty in answering them.

Now, Lorianne clearly showed that she didn’t want to be separated from Nathaniel again. Despite only meeting each other in less than a month, the child’s desire was strong.

Understanding how valid Elsie’s concern was, Nathaniel reached for both of her hands. He enveloped them in his broad palms, hoping to channel some of his strength to her.

“Elsie, we’ll face this together,” Nathaniel said, his voice as gentle as the passing summer breeze, “Let’s start by spending more time together, either with or without Lorrie.”

Nathaniel knew that Elsie needed more time. He wouldn’t press on living together yet. Once he moved into Elysian Heights, he could visit Elsie and Lorianne more frequently.

He might live in another unit on a different floor, but it would be easier to be with them. As much as he would love to live together already, strengthening their bonds was the topmost priority.

“Yes, Niel. I love your suggestions. Let’s do that.”

Elsie exhaled softly. Nathaniel’s propositions, spoken gently by him, eased a part of her worries.

He was still the same gentleman, previously a boy, the one she had been admiring since their teen days.

Nathaniel had always been respectful to her, much to Elsie’s delight. He didn’t invade her space and demand her to make changes to suit his preferences.

Instead, they worked together to ensure the life they chose together was built under their shared trust and understanding.

No matter what had happened in the past that involved his revenge against his paternal family, she couldn’t deny he was the best partner one could ever wish for.

The smile on Nathaniel’s lips faltered slightly. Exhaling a sigh, he tightened his grasp on Elsie’s hands. He kept his eyes, brimming with determination, on her hopeful ones.

“You could choose to ignore me after what I did before… but, you didn’t,” Nathaniel spoke, his voice becoming more raspy as he struggled with his conflicting emotions, “I can’t thank you enough… for coming back to me.”

She was indeed the biggest blessing in his once-wretched life. With the appearance of their lovely child now, a more dazzling light showered onto his path.

Elsie swallowed, her heart tightened as she heard the unmistakable longing and gratitude in Nathaniel’s voice.

“You let me back into your life, Niel,” Elsie whispered, once again her eyes glazing with tears, “You have my gratitude.”

Elsie’s earnest words touched Nathaniel’s heart. He leaned forward, gently bringing her in his arms. His smile deepened when she returned his hug.

Tonight marked the new beginning of their relationship, the one they would nurture with their precious child by their side.
