Chapter 221: Humans Are Capable of Being True Evil
As the movie progressed further, it brought Lariette and Ruediger deeper into the mother’s journey. The clock continued ticking on the wall, signaling that the time had changed to midnight.

Neither Lariette nor Ruediger showed signs of being sleepy. They witnessed the battered and exhausted mother, whose right hand was broken, finally finding her missing daughter in the climax.

“Oh, thank goodness…” Lariette covered her mouth, her eyes teary, “I was so scared when she got locked in the vault. She didn’t give up until the end.”

Ruediger glanced at Lariette, seeing her teary face dimly illuminated by the dull lights. Smiling faintly, he said, “She didn’t stop. Not even when her bones were broken.”

Lariette hummed, agreeing with Ruediger. Her eyes were still locked on the screen, watching the final moments before the credits rolled in. Her bag of popcorn was left forgotten by her side, still half full.

The mother’s muffled cries due to her broken jaw and teeth tugged at their heartstrings. She collapsed as she cradled the child, her body finally giving up.

The scene faded, showing the mother’s point of view, blurred as she hugged her small daughter. Rushed footsteps echoed in the background, coming from a group of police.

Soon, the movie ended by showing the mother in a hospital bed with her child by her side. Despite how bruised and broken her body was, her spirit remained unchanged.

“That was so intense,” Lariette turned to Ruediger. She wiped her eyes, bloodshot from her silent crying, “But, so good! I didn’t expect the mastermind to be her own mother-in-law!”

Ruediger chuckled upon hearing Lariette’s words. He leaned forward, grabbing the remote controller before turning the lights bright again.

“The old lady was the true evil,” Ruediger exhaled a sigh, “How could she stage her own granddaughter’s kidnapping? All because the mother divorced her useless husband.”

Lariette nodded a few times. Chewing her lower lip, she remembered how surprised and enraged she was when the true mastermind was revealed.

“I’m not surprised if such a thing really happened,” Lariette shook her head. She ran her fingers through her hair, her brows furrowing, “It’s disgusting, but humans are capable of being that evil.”

Lariette occasionally listened to true crime scene podcasts. Some of the cases truly shook her to the core. The criminals’ sheer insanity, including how some of them appeared normal in public, terrified her.

Ruediger smiled in helplessness. Keeping his gaze on Larriete, he said, his voice low, “It’s undeniable, Lettie. The most evil one can be the most likeable person in a neighborhood, for example.”

Lariette crossed her legs on the couch, hugging them to her chest. Tilting her head, she replied, “I hope we won’t encounter any. I’ve had my share of running away from deranged people already. My feet and calves hurt! Grrr!”

“Hahaha! That’s so true! You have a real life experience of running away once.”

Throwing his head back, Ruediger laughed out loud. He knew Lariette referred to the time she ran across the rain-soaked forest weeks ago, trying to get away from the two men sent by Leon[01].

Lariette shot Ruediger a look, to which he replied with a wink. The previously intense atmosphere due to the movie gradually dissipated.

“Let’s watch something lighthearted next time,” Ruediger chuckled. Grabbing his bag of popcorn, he grabbed a handful of it, “Maybe an old movie instead of the new one.”

“That sounds good. I don’t want to cry again,” Lariette grumbled. She also reached for more popcorn.

Ruediger’s lips formed a smirk, “Well, who says comedy won’t have sad moments? Don’t worry. I’ll take your photos if you cry again later.”

“Eddy!”

“Hahaha!”

Lariette widened her eyes, glaring at the laughing Ruediger. She held back from throwing a pillow at him, not when he was holding a handful of popcorn!

Even though Ruediger was the one who handled most cleaning in this apartment, Lariette didn’t want the sweet caramel popcorn to scatter around on the floor.

What a waste of good popcorn!

Lariette only left the living room half an hour later. She finished the entire bag of popcorn while bantering with Ruediger, whose laughter kept echoing in the living room.

“Good night, Eddy. Thank you for the popcorn,” Lariette waved at Ruediger as she dragged herself to the hallway, heading to her bedroom.

“Night! Don’t dream of the evil old lady!”

“…”

Halting in her tracks, Lariette turned around. Ruediger smiled cheekily as he shrugged, pretending not to understand when she glared at him.

Lariette huffed. She was tempted to smack Ruediger’s back, the one that had fully recovered from his previous bruises.

More chuckles were spilled from Ruediger’s lips. He waved at Lariette, who made the gesture ‘I’m watching you’ before turning around, stomping her fluffy home slippered feet on the floor.

‘She’s so cute.’

Ruediger couldn’t help but think how adorable Lariette was. He enjoyed the gradual changes in their relationship. They were already comfortable with each other before, but now the feelings were much better.

Shutting the TV off, Ruediger also walked away from the living room. He glanced at the wall clock, seeing that the time had shifted to a quarter past one.

Tonight’s movie time was indeed memorable. Hopefully, they would make this a routine.

Once Ruediger stepped inside his bedroom, his emerald eyes drifted to a suit hanging on the wall. He would wear the navy blue suit tomorrow, paired with Lariette’s gorgeous blue dress for the cafe’s event.

Ruediger followed Lariette to get a few accessories a few days ago, the ones that would befit the event. One of them was a matching trinket.

‘I gonna ask her when we should go to the amusement park.’

Smiling to himself, Ruediger still remembered their plan to go to a theme park together. Unfortunately, neither of them had the time yet.

Ruediger lay on the bed, his gaze sweeping across the ceiling. In the quietness of the moment, his mind inevitably recalled the movie he had just watched with Lariette earlier.

The sacrifices of a mother.

Decades might have passed, but he still remembered his.
