Chapter 227: He Is Gracious Enough To Come See Me Here
“Each club has to be responsible for keeping their areas clean. We don’t want the school covered in trash by the end of the day.”
Howard’s words received a collective nod of approval from Lariette, Nora and Mr. Eastwood. They were nearing the end of their meeting.
“Shall we summarize our points?” Lariette tapped her pen against her planner, “I think we can meet the students this week.”
“Let’s!”
The four teachers went through their discussion from the very beginning. The Sports Day was still one month away, but it was better to keep being ahead of schedule.
Distant and muffled chatters of the students echoed from the outside, coming from the students. Most of them were on their way home, while the others stayed for club activities.
“I think these cover the essentials,” Howard commented once they were done, “If we have to, we’ll make any last minute adjustments once we meet the students.”
“Will you do the announcement?” Nora glanced at Howard, wearing a playful grin, “Tell them to gather after school this Friday.”
Narrowing his eyes, Howard scoffed, “You’re so intent on pushing more work on me, huh?”
Nora rolled her eyes while Lariette laughed. Mr. Eastwood simply smiled. They concluded the meeting not long after the end of the school hours.
“Lari, shall we go together?” Nora asked as she rose to her feet.
“Sure! I have all my things already,” Lariette quickly agreed.
The two ladies headed out of the language faculty room, saying goodbye to Howard and Mr. Eastwood. They walked past the teachers’ lounge where most of it was still occupied.
“Your darling husband didn’t come to pick you up, huh?” Nora nudged Lariette by the elbow, she grinned mischievously, “I’ve only seen him walking you here every morning.”
“I told him not to,” Lariette chuckled. She playfully swatted Nora’s arm, “If it’s occasionally, it’s fine for me. I don’t mind him accompanying me in the morning tho.”
Lariette was telling the truth. She liked her new routine, going to school with Ruediger by her side. Because the apartment was nearby, she usually took her sweet time walking.
They often shared mundane chat, including exchanging jokes and also what they should have for dinner. Accompanied by the crisp early autumn air, the atmosphere between them was nice.
Nora chuckled, “Invite him to Sports Day. We might as well get more labor. Of course, you can pay him in bed later. Right?”
Lariette froze, her cheeks flushed red. She smacked Nora’s back, “What are you saying?!”
“Oww! Why are you so shy?” Nora laughed, trying to escape Lariette’s palm, “You guys are already married!”
“Still!”
“Hahaha! Okay, okay!”
Lariette and Nora bantered until they walked out of the building. The golden afternoon sun bathed the school under its light, showering its warmth.
The students still flocked toward the school gate, some even ran as if they couldn’t wait to make their exit. The two ladies continued walking together.
Nora rented an apartment nearby. Like Lariette, she also usually came to school on foot. The ladies chatted while occasionally returning the greetings from the passing students.
Lariette took her phone out, intending to text Ruediger that she was on her way home. Suddenly, Nora tugged at her arm.
“Lari… look at the gate.”
“Huh?”
Lariette’s eyes wandered to the school gate, finding how strangely the students, and also the guard flocked to one particular spot. Because of the distance, she couldn’t see what happened properly.
“That’s strange… Should we check it out?” Lariette muttered. She craned her neck to look, but still was unable to see what caused the little crowd.

“We should.”
Lariette and Nora resumed walking. They quickened their pace, reaching the school gate in no time. The students made way for them as they strode forward.
The nearer Lariette got to the gate, the clearer the hushed whispers coming from the student. She also saw Bill, the security guard, standing among them. He appeared cautious but, not too alarmed.
“Lari… do you see it?”
Nora gasped once she caught what attracted the students. Lariette froze, also was surprised by what she saw.
A sleek black limousine was parked just outside the gate. Its polished surface gleamed under the golden sunlight. Its presence was imposing against the usual after-school bustle.
What was a limousine doing here? This was just a regular public middle school, not a high-tier private one.
Then, Lariette’s eyes shifted to the man standing beside it. Nora, Bill, and the rest of the students were also staring at him.
Under Lariette’s surprised gaze, the man walked away from the luxury car, heading in her direction. He paused a few feet before her.
“Miss Elsher, it’s my pleasure to meet you,” the man slightly bowed at Lariette.
The middle-aged man dressed impeccably in a tailored dark-gray suit. His silver-streaked hair was neatly combed back. Despite the smile on his face, the heavy weight of his aura was unmistakable.
Lariette was on high alert as soon as the man greeted her. She was not aware of who he was, but he acted as if he knew her well. It was clear he came from high society.
“Who are you?” asked Lariette, her voice stern, “I do not know you, mister. What are you doing at a school like this?”
Lariette inwardly groaned as she realized the eyes shifting from her to the middle-aged man. She could say with certainty that whoever this man was, he wasn’t affiliated with her grandfather.
“Someone wants to meet you, Miss Elsher,” the man glanced over his shoulder, looking at the limousine before staring at her again, “Chairman Alvord is waiting for you. Please come with us.”
Lariette’s breath caught in her throat. She abruptly turned to look at the limousine. Her heart began thumping rapidly in her chest.
Chairman Alvord? Ruediger’s estranged father?
Why did he want to meet her? To pressure her to leave Ruediger?
Lariette still remembered the first time she saw Vincent, Ruediger’s younger brother[01]. The man demanded them to break off their marriage.
Frowning, Lariette unconsciously gripped her hands into fists. The initial surge of fear died down the moment she remembered the resentment Ruediger faced from his biological father.
She might not know the details in depth, but no adults in their right mind would ostracize their own young children like this.
“L-Lari… Do you know him? Should we do something?”
Nora’s anxious voice pulled Lariette out of her trance. Looking at the former, she saw the signs of worry on her face.
“It’s fine, Nora,” Lariette patted Nora’s arm before clearly enunciating her next words, “My husband’s father is gracious enough to come see me here.”
Lariette sneered seeing the slight twitch of the middle-aged man’s lips. She knew he was bothered by what she had just said.
With so many eyes on her, Lariette decided to speak the truth. Nora, and everyone who would know about this might question her about Ruediger’s background soon, but this was the better choice.
“I’ll meet him, mister,” Lariette said, deliberately smiling too sweetly, “But, I don’t want to go any further. My husband is waiting for me at home.”
The middle-aged man turned around, ignoring what Lariette said, “Come this way, Miss Elsher. Chairman Alvord isn’t one with patience.”
Lariette patted Nora’s back, reassuring her nothing was wrong. Taking one step forward, she followed the middle-aged man. She subtly fiddled with her smartphone before slipping it back inside her bag.
The man opened the door, gesturing for Lariette to get inside. She stood still, her eyes met with a sharp gaze, coming from a much older man sitting inside the limousine.
