Chapter 234: I Learned from the Best
Ruediger returned to the apartment with a decision, the one he had been holding off for ages. Walking down the hallway from the elevator, his footsteps rang heavily against the floor.
‘Now is the right time. Why delay any longer?’
Frowning, a dangerous glint flickered in Ruediger’s emerald eyes. He quickened his pace, reaching the apartment in no time. Once inside, he shut the door behind him with a soft click.
The silence in the apartment was thick, but Ruediger’s mind was anything but that. Exhaling softly, he headed to the kitchen first.
Soon, the hiss of the coffee machine resonated in the kitchen. Its aromatic smell wafted in the air as Ruediger helped himself to another cup of coffee, needing to clear his mind and calm his excitement down.
Leaning his hip against the kitchen countertop, Ruediger stared at the dark coffee, his gaze was sharp. His mind had begun calculating his next steps.
For what?
To get back at his estranged father for the stunt he pulled yesterday.
That bastard thought he could use her to get to him. He was dead wrong!
Dead wrong!
After being exiled by Chairman Alvord decades ago, Ruediger begged to be given chances, but to no avail. Then, he stopped trying altogether. He had never planned on looking back.
The man who held the title of his father in name only had just made a fatal mistake. He would learn soon how much he had screwed up.
Leaving the kitchen with the half-cup of coffee, Ruediger headed to his home office. He clenched his jaw, trying to suppress the new flares of anger that burst within him.
Stay calm. He had to stay calm.
He possessed the upper hand in this game. He would never shoot himself in the foot by acting sloppily.
Ruediger reached for his phone. Sitting on the office chair, he dialed a number. The call barely rang twice before it was answered.
“Boss, why are you calling me? Any new job? …hello?”
Edmund’s voice was smooth, echoing from the end of the line. He seemed to sense the danger from the heavy silence from Ruediger’s side before the man finally spoke.
“Prepare to leak the info this Monday,” Ruediger said, his tone was even yet with silent fury at the edges, “Do it anonymously.”
Edmund paused, before he inhaled a breath. He asked cautiously, “Is this about Chairman Alvord?”
Ruediger replied in a beat, “Yes.”
Remained sitting in the chair, Ruediger tapped his finger on the armrest. Despite his fury, he wouldn’t let emotions cloud his judgment and action.
Exploding in anger would just make him careless in planning his next moves.
“We’ve had the info for months,” Edmund stated, reminding Ruediger, “You’ve never wanted to use it before, even when I suggested. What changed now?”
This was something Ruediger had been planning to do, but he took his sweet time delaying it because there was no immediate need. But the waiting ended now.
“He went after my wife,” Ruediger said, his voice measured as he briefly told Edmund, “He approached her. I won’t let him feed her lies and manipulate her like he has done to everyone else.”
Edmund cursed, his voice low, “What a bastard.”
Ruediger didn’t respond. His silence was enough to tell Edmund that he shared the same thoughts.
Ruediger knew that Edmund crossed paths with Chairman Alvord a few times before, including Vincent. The encounters were unpleasant because both men tried to get information about Mr. R, but Edmund successfully dodged them so far.
Edmund’s voice echoed again from the end of the line, “How much do we release? We won’t release everything at one go, don’t we?”

Ruediger didn’t immediately answer Edmund. Exhaling a breath, he thought deeper about the situation.
The information, and the concrete evidence they had wasn’t just a scandal. It was a bomb. With one right detonation, the Alvord Corporation would suffer from its explosion.
Through his diggings before, Ruediger found out that his estranged father had deep ties with the People’s Century Party, one of the powerful political factions in Velondia. To be specific, with two of their top figures.
Senator Grayson Fowler and Minister Lucian Firth had received millions of under-the-table funds from Chairman Alvord. The reason? To push for more corporate-friendly legislation that benefited Alvord Corporation.
A very classic bribery, the one Ruediger had every single receipt.
Bank transfers. Emails. Private meeting logs. All were obtained from Bradley Sherman, one of Chairman Alvord’s right-hand men.
The arrogant Bradley had grown careless, something Ruediger was grateful for. The middle-aged man had been sending internal emails to confirm the payment distributions.
Ruediger’s sources managed to get their hands on everything, just waiting to be exposed.
After a long period of silence, Ruediger instructed, “Make the leak look like an independent investigative journalist dug this up. I want him to believe someone else is coming after him.”
Edmund hummed, approving Ruediger’s plan, “Good idea, Boss. He has many enemies. He won’t ever think you’re the one after him.”
And, one of them was Jonathan Elsher.
Letting out a scoff, Ruediger said, “No. He won’t doubt me. I’m trash in his eyes, remember?”
Edmund said nothing. He knew this issue had been a thorn in Ruediger’s heart. Chairman Alvord viewed him as someone useless, someone without a bright future.
If only the damn old man knew what his exiled eldest son was capable of.
“Anyway,” Edmund coughed awkwardly before saying, “He’ll start hunting for a mole who leaks this info to the said journalist.”
Somehow, Edmund regretted not being there the moment Chairman Alvord discovered how reckless Bradley was. His arrogance made him think nothing could ever touch him, especially being under Chairman Alvord’s wings.
Ruediger nodded, “Yes. People’s Century Party will scramble to protect itself once this story breaks. The senator and the minister will turn on him to save their own skins.”
“Hmm… Leaving the man to take the fall, huh?”
“You can say so.”
Edmund chuckled, low and sounding so impressed, “Damn, Boss! You’re more vicious than I remember.”
Ruediger didn’t smile. The expression under his darkened gaze was unreadable. He replied, his voice cold, “I just learned from the best.”
From the very man he was about to destroy.
Before ending the call, Edmund promised to make the preparations before releasing the information this Monday. Ruediger simply reminded him to be careful and keep him up to date with everything.
“Haa…”
Exhaling a sigh, Ruediger pinched the space between his brows. His lack of sleep from last night started to catch up to him. He felt better after telling Edmund his plan.
Ruediger was aware that doing this wouldn’t end Chairman Alvord and Alvord Corporation. And, that was fine. He never intended to completely ruin his estranged father and the legacy he was proud of.
Nevertheless, this would serve as a warning to the man who thought he was above the world.
The leak would be anonymously done, but…
‘He has it coming.’
Carving a sneer on his lips, Ruediger couldn’t help but imagine what kind of face his father would show once he got a clue that this useless eldest son of his was involved in revealing this scandal.
