Chapter 247: Favorite Things to Do in Autumn
<.Blossom Phoenix Middle School.>
The crisp autumn breeze rustled the leaves of the tree outside the classroom. The morning sunlight cast a golden glow inside, bathing the entire room under its lights.
Lariette had just stepped inside the classroom for the sixth graders, preparing to give them lessons. The wall clock pointed to a nine.
Lariette intended to start the week’s first lesson with something easy and entertaining. Some of the students looked bored already despite being early into the school hours.
Standing at the front while facing the students, Lariette clapped her hands once, “Okay, class! It’s autumn now, right? We’re going to write about our favorite things to do in autumn. What do you think?”
“Yes!”
“Ms. Elsher, should we share ideas?”
“Ah! I wanna be the first, then!”
Some students eagerly responded, while several hands shot up. Lariette chuckled seeing the children’s enthusiasm. Only a few seemed lackluster about it, but she didn’t feel the need to point it out.
“Okay. We’ll start with Annette,” Lariette smiled, pointing to a girl sitting in the middle row, “Annette, what do you like to do when autumn comes?”
The girl called Annette giggled before saying, “Jumping in leaf piles, Ms. Elsher. Hehe, my sister and I always run and jump right in when our dad rakes them up.”
“That sounds so much fun,” Lariette laughed, “I think you can describe how the leaves feel. Also, the sound when you land. Don’t forget about how excited you and your sister feel too.”
A boy with a crew-cut waved his hand, “Ms. Elsher, I love carving pumpkins! Should I write about the designs I’ve made?”
“Why not include the mess you’ve left behind too?” Lariette added jokingly, earning laughter from the boy and his classmates.
Another student, a boy raised his hand. He proudly declared, “Ms. Elsher, I like drinking hot chocolate while reading books with my parents. We have a comfy reading nook.”
Lariette’s eyes gleamed, feeling the warmth of the boy’s family as they did their favorite hobby together.
“Ethan, that’s so lovely. Seems like your parents are avid readers like you too, right?”
Ethan smiled sheepishly, “I like reading because of my mom and dad’s influence. I really enjoy reading together with them.”
Lariette nodded in approval. She remembered seeing Ethan reading fiction books during breaks. The other teachers also noticed the same.
As long as the students didn’t read sneakily when the lessons were ongoing, the teachers wouldn’t forbid them. Of course, the books they brought to school should be appropriate.
The girl beside Ethan giggled. She raised both of her hands, “Ms. Elsher, I like dressing up for Halloween the most! Getting free candies is the best!”
Laughter rippled in the classroom, elicited by the girl’s declaration. Lariette also joined along, her shoulders slightly shook as she giggled.
“Emma, I believe you have your favorite costume or the best trick-or-treat memory,” Lariette gave the examples, “Why don’t you share both in your essay?”
“Okay! I will do that!”
As the students excitedly shared their opinions, also talked to each other, a boy sitting in the front raised his hand. He asked Lariette, “Ms. Elsher, what about you? What’s your favorite thing to do in autumn?”
The boy’s question garnered the attention of his classmates. Some of them stopped chatting, wanting to hear their teacher’s answer.
Pleased with the question, Lariette smiled, “I love autumn walks, especially when the leaves have changed colors. Also, I like reading and watching shows with a cup of hot tea and some cinnamon rolls.”
“Cinnamon rolls… they sound so good.”
“Ms. Elsher, I love cinnamon rolls too!”
Lariette clapped her hands again, laughter rolling out of her mouth. She said, “Take out your notebooks now. Write a short essay in half an hour. I’ll pick some of you to read them before the class ends.”

“Okay, Ms. Elsher~”
The students replied in unison, agreeing with the task given by Lariette. This was one of the activities their language teacher liked getting them to do.
As the students began taking their notebooks out and getting their pencils, Lariette sat at the teacher’s desk. She smiled as she listened to excited whispers that rippled in the classroom.
Halfway through the allocated time, Lariette began walking around the class. Sometimes, she stopped when the students asked for opinions.
“Who wants to volunteer first?” Lariette asked once the time was up. She swept her gaze across the classroom, “Let’s have five students. The rest can send me their essays after class.”
“Ms. Elsher, me!” Ethan eagerly volunteered himself, his small face beaming with anticipation.
Lariette grinned, happy seeing how enthusiastic Ethan was, “Go on, Ethan.”
Standing up, Ethan picked up his notebook and started reading his essay out loud. Lariette and the other students gave their attention to the young boy.
After Ethan, a few more students raised their hands. Lariette picked four of them. The clock continued ticking on the wall as the students read their essays, eventually reaching the end of the lesson.
“Class, that’s all for today. I like what I’ve heard so far,” Lariette smiled at the students, seeing some of them giggle, “I’ll read the rest and return your notebooks before our next lesson.”
“Thank you, Ms. Elsher.”
Lariette left the classroom after telling the class monitor to collect the notebooks and bring them to her desk in the teachers’ lounge. Her steps were slow as she headed there.
“Lari!”
Lariette abruptly halted her steps when Nora suddenly appeared. Confused, she stared at her colleague whose face showed hints of concern.
“What is it, Nora?” Lariette arched her brows, “Do you need any help?”
“Well,” Nora paused, looking a little hesitant. She glanced around the hallway before stepping closer to Lariette, “I didn’t mean to pry, but… that man from before, your father-in-law… is his company really in trouble?”
Blinking, Nora’s question earned more confusion from Lariette, especially when the former suddenly brought up Matthew Alvord.
Nora let out soulless laughter. Patting Lariette’s back, she asked, “I think you should check the news. The ones on The Sentinel Report site.”
Still puzzled by what Nora said, Lariette grabbed her phone from the inside of her bag. She quickly searched for the news outlet, only to have her eyes flung open in surprise.
