Chapter 250: You Two Glow So Much
Garlic butter steak bites and roasted butternut squash with thyme—Ruediger’s request to Lariette. Their first destination before going back to the apartment was the grocery store.
“Why are you smiling like that? You look kinda suspicious.”
Lariette narrowed her eyes upon seeing the mischievous smile on Ruediger’s lips. The man replied with a smirk, followed by a wink. They had just stepped inside the store.
“I can’t wait to try your cooking tonight. You won’t set the kitchen on fire, right?”
Lariette immediately shot Ruediger a look. She exclaimed in a mock offense, “Excuse me? You have seen me cook before, haven’t you? Did I set the stove on fire?”
Laughter spilled from Ruediger’s lips, softening his rough facial features. Lariette pretended to huff before nudging his elbow once, causing him to laugh more.
“Get me a trolley.”
“Aye aye, ma’am.”
Lariette let Ruediger push the mid-sized trolley as they walked down the aisles. Seasonal delights filled the shelves, attracting buyers to get the fresh and vibrant produce.
“I wanna get some green beans too,” Lariette said after getting butternut squash and some fragrant herbs, “Sautee them with lemon zest. Don’t you think they’ll be perfect?”
“They’ll pair well with roasted butternut squash and garlic butter steak bites.”
Ruediger nodded, agreeing with Lariette. He gazed at the rows of fresh produce before staring at the firm, orange squash sitting inside the trolley.
Lariette and Ruediger moved from one stall to the next, procuring ingredients for their dinner. They also bought some fresh parsley and a well-marbled sirloin steak. As for garlic and lemon, they still had some stock left at home.
“Should we get some grapes?” Lariette slowed her steps once they reached the aisle displaying fresh fruits. Her eyes scanned the tangerines, apples, grapes and strawberries.
“You like the green ones, right?” Ruediger reached out for a pack. He carefully scanned through the clusters of green grapes, “They look so fresh.”
Lariette glanced at Ruediger, a hint of blush colored her cheeks upon hearing Ruediger’s words. It was just a simple remark, but enough to flutter her heart.
“Oh! It’s you two again.”
A cheery yet unfamiliar voice echoed behind Lariette and Ruediger, luring them to look at who it belonged. They saw an elderly woman in a bright green cardigan with a basket of items.
Lariette and Ruediger exchanged a confused glance for a second before greeting the elderly woman.
“Hello.”
“Hehe, please don’t mind this nosy old lady much,” the elderly woman chuckled. She smiled warmly at the couple, “I’ve seen you together a few times now. You two look so well matched. I can’t help but greet you two.”
Lariette blinked, clearly caught off guard. Ruediger was the same, but his expression quickly mellowed for he appreciated the words spoken by the elderly woman.
“Thank you, ma’am,” Lariette chuckled, her tone bashful.
“That’s so kind of you,” Ruediger returned the elderly woman’s smile with one of his own, “Are you getting ingredients for dinner too, ma’am? Are you here alone?”
“My old man is over there,” the elderly woman laughed while pointing in a direction, “He’s so excited to make banana bread. Our granddaughter will visit us tomorrow.”
Lariette and Ruediger exchanged a few more words with the elderly woman before she wheeled her trolley away, heading to her husband. She left some parting words to the couple.
“You two glow so much. Reminds me of my husband and me, hehe. See you around again.”
Lariette and Ruediger stared at the elderly woman’s back, still quite stunned from their short encounter. They saw an old man in a blue coat smiling at her before reaching for her shoulders while showing some ripe bananas.
The image of the elderly couple gave off a heartwarming sensation, for they might have weathered decades together, yet they still treated each other with care and affection.
“The ma’am… She thinks we…” Lariette tilted up her chin, looking at Ruediger. She was still a little pink, “Us? Glow?”

Ruediger arched his brows. A playful smirk tugged at his lips, “She’s right. You’re always glowing. So I’m kinda affected because I’m always with you. Hm?”
Half amused and half shy, Lariette swatted Ruediger’s arm, “You’re teasing me.”
“I’m just agreeing with her.”
Lariette shot a look at Ruediger, whose teasing smile seemed more annoying now. But she couldn’t deny something else bloomed in her heart, one feeling that she still hadn’t dared to put a name on it.
“Let’s go and pay,” Lariette broke the eye contact. She unconsciously tightened her grasp on her tote bag, “I still need to prepare the ingredients before cooking.”
“Okay.”
Ruediger held back a smile as he had already noticed the familiar flush on Lariette’s face. His eyes lay on her dainty back, half concealed by her long hair. He clenched his hands, fearing he would reach for the strands and bring them to his lips.
Lariette and Ruediger didn’t talk much as they returned to the apartment. She immediately changed into comfortable casual wear and tied her hair into a ponytail before heading to the kitchen. The ingredients had been laid out by Ruediger earlier.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to help?” Ruediger asked as he stared at Lariette who tied the apron around her waist. He sat on a stool by the kitchen island.
“No need,” Lariette shook her head, “You should watch some TV. Or just be on observation duty if you still insist on staying here. No interfering, okay?”
“Okay, okay. I’ll be your sole yet attentive audience then.”
Lariette chuckled as Ruediger raised his hands, pretending to surrender. She began by peeling the butternut squash before chopping them into cubes, her movements quick and precise.
Ruediger quietly watched Lariette, his lips spread into a slow yet soft smile. He couldn’t deny that her culinary skill was good. His gaze never failed to follow her movements.
‘This is nice.’
Ruediger appreciated the comfort he received by just sitting still on the stool. Thoughts about his estranged father left his mind as he was lost, wandering in another one.
The unfamiliar yet kind elderly woman’s remarks echoed again in Ruediger’s mind, swelling his heart with happiness and anticipation.
This was still early, too early in his initial planning, but…
‘I wish to let her know my feelings soon.’
Ruediger knew that he still kept secrets from Lariette. He also knew that by professing his feelings too early, he risked ruining their current relationship. He was no stranger to both facts.
But he also wanted to believe in his instincts. His heart had been telling him of the more intimate changes he sensed from her as they spent time together.
The adorable blush on her cheeks. The little touches when their hands grazed each other. The more flirty moments they experienced together.
He was not that naive to mistake the changes for something more innocent. At the very least, he believed she saw him more than a man she was linked to in a contractual marriage.
Lowering his gaze, Ruediger stared at his hands clenching the edge of the stool. Concern flickered in his emerald orbs before resolve quickly replaced his initial worry.
‘Yes. I will confess to her. Maybe…’
