Chapter 276: The Roar of a Superbike
<.Norvonna, around fourteen years ago.>

The hues of gentle blue painted the late spring sky. Puffy white clouds drifted lazily, following the breeze. A warm gust of wind rustled the canopy of trees in the park.

A young, teenage Ruediger pedaled his bicycle to his usual fishing spot, the tires moving along the gravel path. A fishing rod was strapped to his backpack. The scent of river water and grass filled the air as he reached the place.

The park was quieter than usual that morning. Ruediger rode past a few joggers. At the playground, only a few children ran here and there, accompanied by two mothers.

Ruediger grinned once he saw Uncle David was already there. The elderly man was settled in his fold-out chair, sheltered by the extending branches of the nearby tree.

“Thought you bailed out,” Uncle David grunted with a smirk, briefly looking behind his shoulder to look at Ruediger.

“Gotta help my aunt with a chore,” Ruediger replied as he dismounted the bike.

The teenager whose crimson locks shone fiery under the sunlight walked toward the elderly man. Their unlikely friendship began over two seasons ago, and it only grew stronger.

“Uncle David… Look at that.”

As Ruediger was about to set up his rod, the corner of his eye caught something strange. He pointed in a direction, leading Uncle David to be wary of what he saw.

A black van with tinted windows circled the other side of the park slowly—too slowly. Whether it was a coincidence or not, the vehicle only moved near the playground.

Ruediger frowned, “It looks off.”

Uncle David narrowed his eyes, finally staring at the black van, “You’re right. Should we… Damn it!”

Uncle David hollered, his eyes flung open. Ruediger’s breath caught in his throat as he witnessed the gut-wrenching scene unfolding.

The van stopped abruptly near the playground. A man, dressed in black, burst from the side door. He grabbed a little girl with one swift motion, right off the swing.

“HEY!” Ruediger shouted.

The man shoved the screaming child inside the van, the door slammed shut before everyone in the playground could react. The van’s tires screeched on the asphalt as it fled from the scene.

Dropping everything, Ruediger jumped on his bike, speeding off. He shouted without looking back, “Call the cops!”

“Rudy! Wait!”

Uncle David screamed back, but Ruediger was already tearing down the path. His legs pedaled furiously, the wind slicing against his face and hair. His eyes never strayed from the van roaring ahead.

“You won’t get away!”

Ruediger growled through clenched teeth, trying his hardest to chase after the van. The main road was quite deserted from other vehicles, but the bicycle still limited his movement.

Until…

VROOMMM!

A deafening roar cut through the other noises, startling Ruediger, coming from behind. In a split second, a black and chrome superbike sped past him, charging toward the van.

A rider, dressed in a fitted black jacket and helmet with a tinted visor, cutting the distance with terrifying precision. The van veered left, trying to shake him.

“NOOO!”

Ruediger shouted when the superbike sped fast the van, thinking the rider might decide it was a hassle to stop the black vehicle. His eyes widened once he witnessed a brutal scene.

The rider made a sharp turn, tires squealing against the asphalt. The bike came around too fast, angling itself directly at the van’s path.

Without hesitation, the rider rammed the superbike into the van’s front, metal crunching on metal. The huge impact forced the van to come to an abrupt halt.

Several vehicles stopped. A few ran outside, trying to help. One took out his phone, making the emergency call.

Ruediger’s jaw dropped as he abruptly stopped behind the van, chest heaving. Without thinking, he ran toward the black vehicle when the rider dismounted the bike.

A man slammed the passenger door open, trying to run. Panic and rage flashed across his face.

“Get away!”

“You dare!”

Ruediger swept his leg before striking a swift punch, sending the man across the road. Gritting his teeth, he caught another thug running from the back, brandishing a knife.

“ARGH!”

The rider quickly disarmed the thug, twisting his wrist before landing a kick to the ribs. The thug fell pitifully on the road, clutching his hand and chest with a painful groan.

Ruediger rushed to the van. He saw the little girl curled in a corner, crying. Relief washed over him, his chest still heaving up and down rapidly.

“Come, you’re safe now,” Ruediger softened his voice, hoping to reassure the frightened child. He extended both hands, beckoning at the girl, but without any hint of pressure.

“Waaaa!”

Fortunately, the child slowly scooted away from the corner. Tears streamed down her cheeks when she ran toward Ruediger, throwing herself in his arms.

“Hush, you’re safe now,” Ruediger cradled the little girl, one hand patting her trembling back, “We caught the bad guys.”

The rider glanced from Ruediger and the child before sweeping his gaze at the two thugs, still groaning on the road. The passersby surrounded the men, not letting them run away.

The incident happened too fast. Most of them were just passing by the road when they were surprised by the superbike ramming against the van. Only then did they realize what actually occurred.

Even though they were enraged by the hoodlums’ malicious behavior, they held back from landing more kicks and punches on them. It was better to let the police handle these thugs.

“Child, are you okay?”

A woman carefully approached Ruediger, her concerned gaze fell on the girl he carried. The little one cried for her mother, still traumatized by the incident.

“I think she’s just shocked,” Ruediger exhaled softly, a weak smile hanging on his lips, “It’s lucky we got her back.”

“You two are mad lads! Brave, mad lads!” one of the passersby, a man, exclaimed.

“The police’s here!” another shouted.

Police sirens wailed in the distance, quickly approaching the scene. The passersby dispersed, making way for the police officers once they rushed out of the cars.

In the commotion, Ruediger caught the rider finally taking off his helmet, revealing the face of a young man, whose features were kind of familiar to him.

The realization sank in much later when they were in the police station to file reports.

He was the guy from the back alley[01]!
