Chapter 28: He Is My Husband
The unfamiliar navy blue truck, including the unfamiliar man walking by Laritte’s side, confused Chairman Delaney. Puzzlement ladened his initially joyful countenance for seeing his granddaughter.
“Brian,” Chairman Delaney called the middle-aged man sitting by his side, his eyes centering on the crimson-haired young man, “Who’s that guy? I’ve never seen him before.”
Brian Kingsley, the elderly chairman’s right-hand man for over three decades scanned the young man in the light blue suit. His eyes flickered with recognition.
“Well, seems like you have quite an interesting guest today, Mr. Chairman. I didn’t expect to see him here.”
“Huh?”
Chairman Delaney finally tore his gaze away from Lariette and the young man, looking at Brian. His assistant’s remark indicated that he knew who the guy was.
“Who is he?”
Frowning, the elderly man continued staring at his right-hand man yet, the brunette whose hair showed traces of gray said nothing until a moment later.
Arching his brows, Brian simply said, “Mr. Chairman, I think we should wait until Miss Lariette introduces him to you.”
Chairman Delaney held back from rolling his eyes. Brian’s mischievous grin told him that the young man’s identity was not a simple one.
Who was he?
Or, from which family was he?
Lariette and Ruediger noticed Chairman Delaney exchanging words with Brian but, they couldn’t hear what the two men were talking about. There was still a significant distance between them and the garden pavilion.
“I think Grandpa asked about you,” whispered Lariette, leaning her head slightly toward Ruediger, “I saw him looking at you.”
“I saw it too,” replied Ruediger, amusement glinting in his emerald eyes, “Your grandfather’s assessing me.”
“…aren’t you worried?”
Lariette unconsciously clenched the strap of her handbag, her sapphire eyes remaining on Ruediger’s side profile.
The man turned to look at her, his beaming smile radiated with conviction.
“I believe in my charms.”
Ruediger’s remarks almost made Lariette burst out laughing. Confidence oozed out from him. She couldn’t help but wonder how the crimson-haired man would win over her grandfather.
Chairman Nicholas Delaney possessed decades of experience ruling over Delaney Industries after his father’s reign. Despite being in his late 70s, his mind was still sharp.
The elderly man’s decades of experience in the corporate world has made him a tough opponent.
Lariette believed her maternal grandfather would spot something was amiss in her and Ruediger’s sudden marriage. Despite knowing that, she was prepared.
“Grandpa~” Lariette sweetly called for Chairman Delaney once she and Ruediger stepped into the pavilion, “I missed you.”
Chairman Delaney paid no attention to Ruediger once Lariette threw herself at him. Returning his granddaughter’s hug, the elderly man patted her back.
“This old man missed you too. My granddaughter looks healthy as always.”
Chairman Delaney’s merry tone resonated in the air, expressing his joy for meeting his granddaughter. He had been waiting for today from the time Lariette said she would visit him.
Lariette giggled before kissing her grandfather’s wrinkly cheeks. Visiting her grandfather had always brought joy to her.
“Hehe~ You look healthy too, even better than a young man.”

When Lariette and Chairman Delaney exchanged laughter, Ruediger and Brian nodded at each other before the men’s attention fell on the grandfather and granddaughter pair.
‘She looks happier than usual,’ thought Ruediger, his eyes softening. He was glad to see the joy radiating from her countenance.
Lariette seemed genuinely delighted to meet Chairman Delaney. Ruediger had heard about their good relationship from Madeline.
The lady might receive scorn from her parents and siblings but, her maternal grandfather wholeheartedly adored her.
“Oh, Grandpa,” Lariette placed one palm on Chairman Delaney’s back, smiling at him before looking at Ruediger, “I want to introduce you to someone. This is Ruediger.”
Chairman Delaney’s eyes sharpened in the next second. He scrutinized Ruediger like a hawk watching over its prey. Countless questions popped into his mind.
Who was this guy?
Another two-faced brat trying to fool his naive granddaughter?
Well, he looked far better than that Damien guy but, who was he?
Chairman Delaney didn’t even care why Lariette brought another man here, not Damien, her supposed boyfriend of two years. It would be better if she had gotten rid of the trashy scum.
The elderly man had always despised Damien but, he didn’t want to meddle in Lariette’s love life. Doing so might create a distance between him and his granddaughter.
Lariette and Brian noticed the menacing vibe Chairman Delaney gave off as the elderly man stared at Ruediger. Yet, the latter seemed unfazed by it.
Nodding in respect, Ruediger politely introduced himself, his voice steady, “Hello, Chairman Delaney. I’m Ruediger Alvord. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Eye-wide in surprise, Chairman Delaney replayed Ruediger’s self-introduction in his mind. His eyes wandered to Brian who kept smiling before landing on Lariette’s face.
“…Alvord?”
Alvord?
The family his son-in-law was in a feud with?!
Sitting by Chairman Delaney’s side, Brian held back from laughing. He understood why Ruediger’s identity would surprise the elderly man.
Everyone knew how much Jonathan hated Matthew Alvord, the current head of the Alvord family. This led to that man despising anyone being directly linked to that family.
“Hehe, that’s right, Grandpa. Ruediger is from that Alvord family.”
Lariette smiled sheepishly. Moving away from the shocked Chairman Delaney, she stood right next to Ruediger before hugging the man’s right arm.
Ruediger glanced at Lariette, honey dripping from his emerald eyes. He refrained from laughing at the sight of her bashful face.
Lariette’s action surprised Chairman Delaney further, his mouth gaping slightly.
“Well, there’s something else I want to tell you, Grandpa,” Lariette purposely softened her voice more. Without missing a beat, she said, “He’s my husband. We’re married.”
“W-what?”
Chairman Delaney hollered across the pavilion, his jaw dropped.
His granddaughter… was married?
To this unfamiliar man?
What’s happening?!
Biting her lower lip, Lariette felt a little guilty for surprising her grandfather like this. But, she didn’t regret her decision to bring Ruediger here.
This was one crucial step to be taken before facing her family tonight.
