Chapter 284: Accident Can Happen
The neon lights brightened certain parts of the city as it was still asleep before dawnbreak. The gentle breeze blew past, rustling past reddish leaves still hanging to the branches. The fallen ones were lifted from the ground and drifted further away.
Wrapped in the comfort of each other’s arms, Lariette and Ruediger lay entangled in bed. She stirred first, her eyelids twitching, but not because she had enough sleep.
‘…what… weird…’
An odd, uncomfortable sensation slipped past her unconsciousness, luring Lariette to wake up. It was warmth, but not the kind that brought her peace.
In the haze of fading sleep, she slowly blinked awake.
Lariette felt Ruediger’s arms around her, hugging her closely. His broad chest lay on her back as their limbs tangled under the blanket. The steady, quiet rhyme of his chest falling and rising told her he was still asleep.
‘…no!’
Lariette screamed internally when she felt it, the tacky dampness between her thighs. Frozen, a sudden realization ran through her. Her heart skipped a beat before she pulled away slightly from Ruediger.
Despite how badly she wanted to jump out of bed, Lariette still forced herself to act with rationale. She slowly pushed Ruediger’s arms from her before carefully slipping out of the comforter.
‘I didn’t… right?’
Lariette’s heart pounded rapidly in the confines of her chest. Kneeling on the bed out of instinct, she brushed her fingers against the sheets.
Lariette’s eyes widened in horror once she felt a wet spot. She also realized the prickly sensation coming from her lower abdomen, followed by a familiar gush from between her thighs.
Without thinking, Lariette switched on the table lamp on her side of the bed. In the low brightness of the orange lights, she saw it, her eyes flung open in horror.
Two dark smears on the sheet where she slept earlier. And…
Lariette’s heart stopped once her eyes drifted to Ruediger. A patch had transferred onto his joggers, the dark red obvious against the light-colored fabric, staining around the upper thigh area from their close contact during sleeping.
“Ah!”
Lariette let out a shriek, slicing through the peaceful early morning. Without meaning to do it, Ruediger stirred, eyes blinking slowly against the light.
“Lettie?” Ruediger rubbed his eyes, voice raspy as he propped up on one elbow, sitting up groggily, “What happened? Are you okay?”
Clarity returned to Ruediger once he saw the look of fright on Lariette’s face. His heart almost jumped, before his gaze caught the evident blood on the pastel sheet.
“Oh,” Ruediger murmured, finally realizing what caused Lariette to look so panicky. He didn’t expect to wake up to this, but an accident could happen.
Lariette’s lips trembled, “S-sorry, I didn’t mean to… It came earlier…”
“Hey,” Ruediger smiled softly, reaching for Lariette’s shoulders, “It’s okay, Lettie.”
“It’s not,” Lariette shook her head, her eyes darting from Ruediger’s face to the sheet and his joggers, “The bed and you… Sorry, I’m so gross…”
Lariette knew she did not mean it to happen, but she still felt terrible. In a second, she unconsciously recalled the same scene she had experienced back when she was still with Damien.
To say he was upset was an understatement.
“No, Lettie, you’re not,” Ruediger quickly refuted, his tone laced with care but firm enough for no room or argument, “This happens and it’s natural. Don’t worry, Lettie, it’s just a little blood.”
Blinking, Lariette turned her teary eyes toward Ruediger. Her emotions were in a mess as she stuttered, “B-but… I ruined the bed… and you’re…”
“Some soap and water can do magic,” Ruediger chuckled, hoping to calm the tensed Lariette. He gently tucked her hair behind her ear, the other hand patting her back.
Lariette sniffled, still ashamed of herself, “Sorry, Eddy.”
“No need to be, Lettie,” Ruediger leaned in, kissing Lariette’s temple softly, “Come. Let’s get you to the bathroom.”

Ruediger slid his arms under Lariette’s legs and back, lifting her with ease. She quickly clung to his neck, burying her face into his shoulder. Her embarrassment still burned hot in her.
Ruediger managed to catch the time shown on the clock. It was still early at half-past four, but already nearing the usual time he woke up.
Stepping inside the washroom, Ruediger gently set Lariette down. She stood before him, bare feet against the cool tiles. Wrapping her arms around herself, her eyes were still red.
“Take your time, Lettie. If you want, take a hot shower,” Ruediger murmured. He brushed his thumb under Lariette’s right eye, “Don’t worry about the bed. I’ll take care of it.”
“But…” Lariette trailed off, lips trembling.
“Worry not,” Ruediger chuckled, kissing both of Lariette’s cheeks, “I’ll go out now. Take your time, okay?”
Lariette nodded quietly, a slight smile finally leaving a trace on her lips. Ruediger grinned, squeezing her cheeks. Then, he walked out of the washroom, the door shut softly.
Following Ruediger’s suggestion, Lariette took a hot shower after taking off her dirty underwear and nightgown and cleaning herself. Steam filled the shower cubicle, curling around the mirrors.
Lariette stood under the stream of warm water, the heat helped as it soothed the cramps that were starting to form. She really didn’t expect to have her period one week earlier, even embarrassing her in front of Ruediger.
But…
The gnawing humiliation started to recede when Ruediger’s calm reaction echoed in Lariette’s memory. He didn’t show even the faintest sign of being grossed out by the accidental stains.
‘Calm down, Lettie. Calm down.”
As Lariette took her time showering, Ruediger moved with efficiency. Securing his locks into a bun, he stripped the bedsheet and the waterproof mattress topper.
The topper had done its job well, sparing the mattress itself. Even though no blood stained the topper, Ruediger still decided to wash it. Arms full, he headed to the laundry room.
Scrubbing the stains took priority, including the one on his joggers. Then, he could do laundry in peace before replacing the topper and the sheet and cooking something.
The sound of water hitting the floor echoed faintly from the washroom as he stepped out of the bedroom.
