Chapter 289: Always So Pretty
After lunch, only a few games were left, including tug-of-war. Sports Day would be concluded at three-thirty in the afternoon, giving the teachers and students time to clean up the field area before sunset.
The sun had softened as Lariette and Nora left the cafeteria. The giant ball of light cast a warm golden hue across the school compound.
The smell of grilled corn, sweet waffles and hot chocolate wafted in the air, coming from the sales booths. Some students and parents went from one stall to the next while the others remained at the field.
“Oh, that’s your dear hubby.”
Nora nudged Lariette’s elbow once she saw a man whose crimson locks shone under the sunlight coming their way. His tall height and striking good looks made him easily spotted among the crowd.
Lariette beamed, her cheeks flushed. She playfully smacked Nora’s back, “Hehe, I gonna drag him to the photo booth. Later, Nora.”
Lariette rushed toward Ruediger. Nora’s laughter followed from behind. She chuckled when Ruediger sped up while trying not to bump into the children. Then, they met in the middle.
“Where are we going?”
Ruediger arched his brows, referring to Lariette’s latest message. She said she wanted to bring him to one of the stalls. A gleam of mischief flickered in her sapphire eyes.
Lariette grabbed Ruediger’s hand, laughter bubbling up her lips, “Hehe, you’ll see. It’ll just take a few minutes. Come!”
Ruediger narrowed his eyes, “Seems like I don’t have any say in the matter. Why? Gonna sell me now?”
“Hahaha! Who says that?”
Clutching Ruediger’s hand, Lariette dragged him to the instant photography booth. They were lucky because only a few people queued there.
Ruediger stared at the modest but charming photography booth, adorned with handmade paper flowers, garlands and bunting. Previous snapshots were glued to a board, while some were hung from strings above.
“Lettie,” Ruediger lowered his gaze from the rows of hanging snapshots to Lariette, his lips curling into a smile, “You wanna take photos? Of us?”
“Bingo!”
Lariette turned to face Ruediger with both hands on her hips. Her whole countenance beamed with excitement when he stated the obvious reason she dragged him here.
Ruediger raised a brow, and then laughter spilled from his lips, “Sounds great. I’d love to have more photos with my beloved wife.”
Lariette rolled her eyes, though her cheeks flushed and the corners of her mouth twitched, “What a smooth talker. Come on.”
Lariette and Ruediger joined the queue. The instant photography stall had different backdrop stands behind the counter, but both with signs of Sports Day. The assigned students had an instant camera each, ready to capture the snapshots.
After a few minutes of waiting, Lariette and Ruediger finally reached their turn. The students warmly greeted the couple before giving some instructions.
“Ms. Elsher, which backdrop would you like?” asked one of the students, “We offer two, four and six snapshots. We give discounts if you choose the third package.”
Lariette glanced at Ruediger. He simply wiggled his brows, eliciting laughter from her. They looked at the backdrop stands.
“Let’s get the third package. As for the backdrop…”
One was designed like a finish line, complete with mock trophies. The other featured a giant cartoon sun wearing big sunglasses with ‘Go! Team! Go!” written across the fake blue sky with white puffy clouds with eyes.
“Let’s pick that one,” Lariette pointed to the sunny sky backdrop, “The sun looks cute and cheesy.”
Ruediger exhaled a sigh, “I think the clouds judge me.”
“Hahaha! They’re not!”
Lariette dragged Ruediger to the backdrop. They fixed their hair and shirts from the mess of walking and running around. The student with the camera stood before them.
“Do I look okay?”

Lariette looked at Ruediger. She ran her palms on both sides of her head, hoping she didn’t look too messy. Thankfully, she didn’t forget to reapply her lipstick before leaving the cafeteria.
One corner of Ruediger’s lips raised high as he stared at Lariette, his gaze gentle. He lifted one hand, gently tucking hair behind her ear.
“Always so pretty.”
Blinking, Lariette glared at Ruediger, her cheeks were as red as his crimson locks. She shrieked internally when she noticed the student smile sheepishly. A few people nearby also glanced at them.
“A-anyway! Photo time!”
Ruediger held back from laughing when Lariette pulled him closer to the backdrop stand. The student grinned while adjusting the lens.
“Ready! One… two… cheese!”
Lariette and Ruediger posed a few times before the students, and most of them were funny. After paying for the instant photos, they left the booth with happy smiles.
“Hehe, why did you puff up your cheeks like that?”
Lariette laughed as she looked at the photos. In one of them, Ruediger crossed his arms, glaring at the camera while puffing up his cheeks.
“You did it too,” Ruediger pointed to the next photo. Lariette posed exactly as him, “You copied me, lady.”
“Hahaha!”
Ruediger’s heart melted into a puddle of honey upon hearing Lariette’s hearty laughter. Her countenance improved than this morning, something he was grateful for. In their last text chat, she did say she felt better.
Ruediger returned his gaze to the photos held by Lariette. Raising one hand, he pointed at one, “I like this one best, Lettie.”
Lariette’s eyes fell on the photo. Without having to ask why, she understood why Ruediger said he liked this particular one the most.
They looked happy in all photos, but this one gave off a quiet contentment vibe. Soft gazes and gentle smiles, their expressions were relaxed in a way rarely caught by a camera.
“Yeah, I like this one too,” Lariette smiled, “We should decorate our living room with these. Should we hang them from fairy lights?”
“Certainly a good idea,” Ruediger hummed, easily agreeing with Lariette. He especially loved her suggestion because it reminded him her cutesy apartment was also his safe haven.
Lariette slipped the photos inside her card holder, afraid of leaving even a wrinkle on them. Then, she tossed the purse into her backpack.
“You’ll play tug-of-war, right?” Lariette asked, glancing toward the field ahead of them. She asked teasingly, “Will it be another win for Mr. All-Rounder?”
Ruediger laughed, amused by Lariette’s remark. He replied with a grin, “Let’s see. This Mr. All-Rounder isn’t omnipotent so…”
Lariette chuckled. She couldn’t wait to witness Ruediger giving his best for the game.
The question was… would his team win?
