Chapter 291: Captivated by Me?
“Now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Awards and gifts!”
More excited gasps and applause filled the air. Without delay, winners from various events were called up to the stage. The lowly-hanging sun still shone brightly on them.
A group of sixth-graders climbed onto the stage to receive small medals and gift bags. An eighth-grader proudly hoisted a plastic trophy above her head, receiving cheers and applause from her parents and friends.
After announcing the top winners for each grade, Principal Smith gave a heartfelt speech. He thanked the teachers for their hard work, the parents for their support and the students for their cooperation.
“Sports Day is never about winning or losing,” Principal Smith said, his voice warm and filled with pride, “It’s about spirit, community and coming together. I’m proud to say that’s exactly what we did today.”
A wave of applause followed. Lariette clapped her hands softly, a satisfied smile tugging on her lips. She glanced at Ruediger who stood beside her. They exchanged a cheeky smile.
Before Principal Smith left the stage, he cheerily announced the cleanup session. The students groaned, eliciting laughter from the teachers and parents.
Still, everyone moved, working side by side. Some picked up litter, others dismantled tents and stacked the plastic chairs high.
Lariette nudged Ruediger’s arm, “It’s your favorite chore, Mr. Househusband.”
Ruediger laughed, amused by Lariette’s remark. He nodded with one brow arching, “Time to redeem my defeat.”
“Hahaha! How are they related?”
While Ruediger assisted the logistics team, Lariette and Nora headed to the sales booth. They worked steadily while helping the students there. They separated the trash into different bags.
The sun had dipped closer to the horizon by the time the last foldable table was packed away. All the garbage bags were lined neatly in an area, waiting to be collected by the garbage disposal team tomorrow.
“Bye bye! See you this Monday!”
“What are you doing tomorrow? Do you celebrate Halloween?”
“Aaaa! I just wanna be lazy in bed!”
Students and parents slowly left the schoolyard. The field, once blaring with shouts and games, now stood still and quiet. The fading orange sky cast a glow across the path.
Lariette and Ruediger waved goodbye to the remaining teachers. Exhausted but content, they made their way back to the truck. Only a very few were still left behind.
“We survived,” Lariette exhaled slowly. She dragged her aching feet, forcing herself to walk, “I can’t wait to shower and sleep.”
“Should I order food now?” Ruediger fished his phone out of his cross-chest bag, “Anything you crave?”
“Any hot soup is fine. I don’t feel like eating anything heavy,” Lariette replied. A yawn escaped her lips, signaling how tired she was.
Lariette and Ruediger got into the truck. The drive home was filled with soft music. They didn’t speak much aside from a little conversation here and there.
When Lariette showered, the food delivery arrived. She emerged from the bedroom, welcomed by the sight of Ruediger in comfy clothes serving the dishes on the table.
“Lettie,” Ruediger put a hand around Lariette’s waist as she approached him, “Is chamomile tea good? You might have had enough of ginger tea today.”
Ruediger’s remarks earned laughter from Lariette. Smiling at him, she nodded, “Chamomile. Thank you, Eddy.”
“Anything for my wife.”
Lariette’s smile softened. She waited at the dining table as Ruediger brewed the tea in the kitchen. Her lower abdomen still ached, sometimes less, sometimes more painful.
“Sports Day is off the list now,” Lariette brought up during dinner, mirth gleaming in her eyes, “The harvest festival is next!”
As planned, Lariette and Ruediger would head to Moonville this coming Friday. Principal Smith had already granted her one day’s leave. Ruediger said he could take time off work on that day as well.
“Are you that excited?” Ruediger smiled, infected by Lariette’s merry joy, “Well, I’m the same. So, shall we proceed with our plan? Leave before dawn?”

“You’re the driver so, as long as you’re okay with it. I like the idea of an early morning trip.”
“Then, it’s decided. Let’s do that.”
To save more time, Lariette and Ruediger discussed departing from the city at three or four in the morning. If they did that, they would reach their destination before ten.
Lariette had already notified Melissa and Paul about their visit. The Campbells eagerly welcomed her and Ruediger back.
Instead of immediately heading to bed after dinner, Lariette and Ruediger decided to unwind in the living room. A movie was played on the TV, but their focus wasn’t particularly on it.
Lariette curled up on the couch, leaning against Ruediger as he hugged her from behind. A heat pack nestled on her tummy, providing more relief. She let him play with her hair, occasionally receiving kisses on her head.
After accepting his confession, one of the things Lariette learned about Ruediger was he liked physical affection. She joked about him being her cuddly bear to which he replied with a huge grin.
Tilting her chin up, Lariette stared at Ruediger. Lines of exhaustion marred his face. Even the way he smiled was less spirited than usual.
Lariette’s lips quirked into a grin. She raised one hand, stroking along Ruediger’s jaw with its back. His mellowed countenance was reflected in her eyes.
Ruediger arched one of his brows, joy gleaming in his emerald orbs. Lariette saw the corners of his eyes crinkled as he laughed.
“Why? Captivated by me?”
Ruediger’s remarks spilled chuckles from Lariette’s lips. She replied teasingly, “You can say so. You even captivated me when you lost in the tug-of-war.”
“Ouch. Don’t remind me of my defeat,” Ruediger faked being distressed. He exhaled a sigh, “I won’t sleep well tonight. I gonna have a nightmare.”
“Hahaha! Don’t be so dramatic!”
Ruediger smiled seeing Lariette laughing merrily. Without saying anything, he leaned down and began peppering her face with soft kisses. His action elicited more chuckles from her.
“Eddy! It tickles!”
“No, it’s not.”
As Lariette and Ruediger bantered on the couch, the same thing happened to Nathaniel and Lorianne, witnessed by a laughing Elsie.
Why?
Because the little one was too excited for their aquarium trip tomorrow.
