Chapter 307: What If You Can’t Wait Until Tonight?
A hush fell again once he registered the meaning of her words. The stream still flowed and the breeze still stirred the leaves, but everything in his world narrowed to her.

Her, Lariette. His beloved. The one he held at the apex of his heart.

Ruediger silently took in the way Lariette looked at him, with her quiet determination, trust and… growing affection.

“Lettie…” Ruediger breathed, voice barely a whisper, “Are you sure?”

Lariette’s cheeks pinkened but she gave Ruediger a small, certain nod. Lifting a hand, she settled her palm on his face, her thumb brushing on his skin.

“Yes. Eddy, I want you. I want you more than before.”

Ruediger studied Lariette, searching her expression. The same resolute gaze seemed to peer into him.

When he thought this fleeting moment was a dream, her familiar warmth grounded him to reality.

“I want you too, like always,” Ruediger whispered back, his heart pounding loudly, “But only if you’re completely comfortable, Lettie. Ah… I don’t mean to sound like I do not trust you.”

Blinking slowly, Ruediger felt the rapid beating of his heart. His body shivered, but not from the cold of being in the middle of a cold autumn stream.

Soft chuckles slipped from Lariette’s lips as she understood Ruediger’s concern. Tiptoeing, she pecked on his lips.

“I know. You wanna make sure I’m comfortable. And I appreciate your thoughts.”

Emotion stirred in Ruediger’s chest, so raw and overwhelming that for a moment, he didn’t trust himself to speak. He leaned down and kissed Lariette’s forehead, down to the tip of her nose and then a soft kiss on her lips.

“You can tell me to stop at any point, okay?” Ruediger whispered.

Lariette’s eyes softened, glistening faintly as she smiled, “I know. That’s why I’m not afraid. You’ve been showing how much you care about me, Eddy. I trust you.”

She believed in himself. He wouldn’t force her into anything she was uncomfortable doing, giving her a sense of security which she lacked in her previous relationship.

Exhaling, Ruediger rested his forehead on Lariette’s, “You don’t know how happy you make me with just those words.”

They stayed like that for a moment longer, two silhouettes in the stream, surrounded by the last of autumn leaves and fading sunlight.

When Ruediger spoke again, his voice was warm and light. He brushed his fingers over the back of Lariette’s hand.

“We should get dry. What if you get a fever?”

Lariette laughed, soft and delighted, “You can be so protective sometimes. You know that, Eddy?”

“I know,” Ruediger smirked, “If you allow me to, I plan on taking care of you for a very long time.”

Lariette leaned up to kiss Ruediger again, quick and playful this time. Squeezing his hand, she said, “Then let’s go back.”

The pair dried their feet before slipping into their socks and shoes. Ruediger placed a shawl he brought over Lariette, trying to shield her from the cold breeze despite she was bundled in layers already. Then, they made their way down the hill, slow yet steady.

“It’s already this dark, huh?”

Ruediger glanced at the surroundings while flashing a torchlight. The last rays of sunlight streamed through the skeletal branches and remaining leaves, weakly illuminating the hillpath.

“Can’t be helped. Days are much shorter in the north,” Lariette chuckled, mindful of her steps, “It’s not even four yet.”

The path was dimmer because of the towering trees of the small hill. Once they neared the cottage, they wouldn’t need the flashlight. The sun’s rays still sufficed.

The residential area of the village was quiet as Lariette and Ruediger trailed back to the cottage. One by one, the houses were lit up as they greeted the darkness, including the Campbells’.

Mrs. Evans’ cottage was already bright by the time Lariette and Ruediger walked past the gate. They didn’t turn off the lights and heating system before leaving for the graveyard.

Lariette and Ruediger had a dinner plan with Melissa and Paul at seven. There were still three hours before the scheduled time.

Ruediger stepped into the cottage first, pushing open the wooden door as the cool late afternoon breeze followed. The warmth of the interior welcomed him, the lights showered the entire hallway and living room.

Then, Lariette followed, walking past the threshold with a light step. After closing the door, she looked up, seeing Ruediger staring at her.

Once their eyes met, an unspoken thrill sparked between them.

Laughing, Lariette asked, “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I want to kiss you again,” Ruediger replied in honesty.

Giggles bubbled on Lariette’s lips. Ruediger stepped closer and pulled her into a tight hug, lifting her slightly off the floor with his strong arms.

“Too eager to kiss me, en? What if you can’t wait until tonight?” Lariette teased, arms circling instinctively around Ruediger’s shoulders. Her warm breath fanned against his neck.

“Just treat this as the prelude,” Ruediger murmured, laughter lacing his tone as he held Lariette’s gaze with her, “So, is it a yes or no?”

“Yes~”

With just one word from Lariette, Ruediger’s lips captured hers. It began slow and playful, tasting the remnants of laughter between them.

Lariette’s fingers brushed through Ruediger’s locks as she kissed him back eagerly, letting herself melt into his embrace.

Then, Ruediger suddenly slipped his hands beneath Lariette’s thighs, lifting her up. Startled and amused, she gave a small yelp, instinctively wrapping her legs around his waist.

“Eddy!” Lariette laughed breathlessly, smacking Ruediger’s back with one hand, “You could’ve warned me.”

Ruediger chuckled, chin tilted up to meet Lariette’s sparkly eyes, “It won’t be fun then.”

Laughing, Lariette cupped Ruediger’s face between her hands, brushing her nose against his as they kissed again. More passionate before the kisses slowed over time.

“You’re so ridiculous, Eddy. I didn’t know that,” Lariette whispered after breaking the kiss. She gently brushed a thumb under his eyes, “Still, I love it.”

Before Ruediger could say anything, Lariette tilted his face to hers again for another long, lingering kiss. His heart pounded rapidly against his chest as he struggled with his desire to carry her immediately to bed.

No.

Not yet.

Despite her sudden wish, he already had plans on how to turn tonight special.

In the end, Ruediger lowered Lariette back to the floor, winning against his raging desire. She chuckled when he hugged her tightly before letting her go.

They exchanged warm, tender gazes before making their way to the living room. The lingering chill had long dissipated.

While Lariette was in the kitchen to brew some hot tea, an anxious Ruediger quickly vanished into another room with his phone. He made sure to close the door before going much farther, to a corner of the bedroom.

“Edmund, I need you to do something.”

Without Lariette’s knowledge, Ruediger called the CEO of Edenia Avenue, all because he hoped to make the night more special for them.

Thus, when they headed to the Campbells for dinner right before seven, a helicopter landed not far from Moonville Village, startling everyone who witnessed it. Then, a black sedan made its way to the particular cottage.

Of course, Lariette knew nothing about it, until much much later in the future.
