Chapter 308: More Than A Forgotten Item
At eight in the evening, the deep navy sky with twinkling stars enveloped the northern countryside. Unlike how quiet Moonville was during the daytime, more noises echoed, carried by the passing breeze.
The wind rustled dry leaves against the windows of the cottages, and the scent of cinnamon and wood smoke drifted in the air.
A huge number of the residents headed to the festival grounds, mostly on bicycles. Because the weekend began tomorrow, parents brought their excited children to have fun there.
Lariette and Ruediger were already seated at the dining table in the Campbells’ home. They arrived shortly before seven. After an hour, all four of them were done with the main dishes.
“It’s dessert time!” Paul announced chirpily as he came out from the kitchen with a big tray, “Our delicious pumpkin pie and apple crumble!”
“Yay!” Lariette clapped her hands, beaming with excitement, “Uncle Paul, I haven’t forgotten how good your apple crumbles are.”
Paul burst out laughing. Placing the tray on the small oak table, he said, “Oh, stop it, Lettie. You always say that. We’re just glad you and Eddy came back to visit again.”
“We’ve promised you, right?” Lariette replied, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, “I wanna show Eddy the harvest festival too.”
Ruediger, sitting beside Lariette, gave her a gentle look, “It’s always good to see where Lettie grew up. She had been talking about the festival for weeks.”
Melissa chuckled after sipping her apple cider, “You two are lucky it’s just cold now. It usually snows much earlier here. Maybe in two or three more weeks.”
“Your Aunt Mel is right,” Paul nodded. He served Lariette and Ruediger the desserts first before placing a plate before his wife, “Lettie, remember that blizzard? I think the year before you moved away.”
“How could I forget,” Lariette chuckled while picking up a dessert fork, “Everyone was stuck inside for days. Hehe, my friends built a fake igloo in our backyard.”
“An igloo?” Ruediger was stunned, “Lettie, don’t tell me you and your friends froze in there?”
“I reserve my right to stay silent,” Lariette huffed, not too keen on sharing more of her embarrassing childhood memories.
Melissa and Paul laughed while Ruediger simply stared at Lariette, mischief flickering in his eyes. She pretended to ignore him, only to yelp when he quietly poked her waist under the table.
Not even ten minutes later, Ruediger placed his fork down. He glanced at Lariette before the Campbells, “I’m sorry, Aunt Mel, Uncle Paul. I need to go back to the cottage for a moment. I’ll return soon.”
Puzzled, Lariette turned toward Ruediger, “Did you forget something, Eddy?? Want me to come with you?”
Ruediger shook his head with a small, apologetic smile, “It’s fine. Just stay and chat here. I won’t be long.”
Lariette was still confused, but she didn’t think too much about it. She didn’t notice the knowing look exchanged between Melissa and Paul after Ruediger disappeared behind the main door.
The Campbells had a mission, to keep Lariette here until Ruediger came back. He asked for their assistance before dinner began when he came to help in the kitchen alone.
Melissa and Paul didn’t know what the young man planned to do but believed it might be some kind of surprise for Lariette.
“Lettie, have more cider,” Paul smiled as he poured apple cider into Lariette’s empty mug. He added teasingly, “Don’t worry about your husband. Why? Scared he’ll trip on his way back?”
“It’s not that,” Lariette’s cheeks flushed, her brow furrowed slightly, “Maybe he forgot his phone. I haven’t seen him holding it since we got here.”
Lariette could only think that Ruediger rushed to the cottage because forgetting something. Most likely, his phone.
“That might be true,” Paul nodded.
Melissa leaned forward, something conspiratorial glinted in her eyes, “He’s a polite one, your Eddy. We’ve said this before, but your uncle and I are glad you married a good man.”
Lariette laughed softly, warmth blooming in her chest. She couldn’t help but be delighted whenever the people she cherished praised Ruediger.
“My grandpa really likes him,” Lariette said after sipping the cider, “Hehe, Eddy won over Grandpa the very first time they met.”
Months had passed, but Lariette still remembered the day she introduced Ruediger to Chairman Delaney. Even until now, the two men of different generations maintained a good relationship.
While continued chatting with Paul and Melissa, Lariette occasionally glanced at the clock. Ruediger had been gone nearly fifteen minutes. She couldn’t help but worry.

Turning toward the window, Lariette saw the reflection of their cozy dinner gathering flickered against the glass. Beyond it, the darkened road led up to her grandma’s cottage.
‘Did he really forget something?’
Whatever Ruediger was doing, Lariette couldn’t shake the feeling that it was more than just a forgotten item due to how long he took.
The truth was, it was never about a forgotten item.
Ruediger was in the cottage now, moving with quiet urgency. He was busy lining the hallway, from the main entrance to their bedroom, with LED lights in the shape of flowers.
Then, Ruediger pulled out three bottles of reed diffusers. All were filled with golden liquid infused with notes of vanilla, amber and cedarwood.
For safety reasons, Ruediger opted for reed diffusers instead of scented candles. He placed one in the bedroom and two in the hallway. The slender reeds began to release a comforting fragrance into the air.
Then, Ruediger grabbed a box of fresh rose and tulip petals. With care, he scattered the soft reds, creamy whites and blush pinks across the hallway floor. The trail continued into the bedroom.
‘Gotta praise Edmund and his staff.’
Ruediger sought Edmund’s help for something he had never done before—get the items immediately and deliver them by helicopter.
To say Edmund was shocked was an understatement.
Still, the CEO of Edenia Avenue quickly arranged everything Ruediger wanted as he raced against time. Edmund also arranged for two men to send the boxes discreetly to the cottage once the helicopter landed in the northern countryside.
Once Ruediger was done, he stepped back to inspect the scene. A sense of thrill pulsed through his veins as his heart thudded with anticipation.
Ruediger couldn’t help but picture Lariette’s expression. Running a hand through his locks, he grinned at himself.
‘She’s going to love this.’
And then, Ruediger rushed out of the cottage to return to Lariette and the Campbells.
