Chapter 309: Shall We Continue?
Ruediger finally returned to Melissa and Paul’s home about thirty minutes after he first left. His chest rose and fell slightly faster than usual, and his crimson locks tousled. He sprinted through the chilly night air.

It couldn’t be helped. Even though the Campbells agreed to keep Lariette there for him, Ruediger didn’t want to raise more suspicions. He sprinted as if his life depended on it.

“I’m back.”

As Ruediger stepped inside, he brushed a hand through his hair in an attempt to tame it. His reappearance led three pairs of eyes his way.

Lariette looked up in concern, her eyes widening slightly. She quickly asked, “What happened? Did you just run? Chased by a ghost, en?”

Ruediger simply smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he closed the door, “There’s no ghost. Just something I had to take care of.”

Blinking, Lariette narrowed her eyes, mild suspicion flickering in her sapphire orbs. Before she could ask more, Melissa chimed in, telling Ruediger to come and warm himself up with some hot drinks.

“We still have apple cider left. Eddy, come. You look cold.”

“Thanks, Aunt Mel. I’m almost freezing.”

Distracted by Melissa, Lariette said nothing. Ruediger shot the older lady with a grateful look. Melissa and Paul refrained from laughing due to how funny the young man acted in order to hide a surprise from his wife.

Then, the four of them chatted and laughed over another serving of desserts and apple cider. The warmth of Melissa and Paul’s home wrapped around them, but eventually, the hour grew late.

“Thank you for the great food~”

“We’ll drop by again tomorrow.”

Around nine-thirty, Lariette and Ruediger began to leave. Melissa and Paul sent the couple to the door, all smiles.

“Come again.”

“Let’s have lunch together tomorrow.”

Walking out of the door, Lariette and Ruediger were greeted by the cool northern village night. They waved at Melissa and Paul before walking side by side down the quiet lane.

A thin veil of fog clung low to the ground. With each passing breeze, the fallen leaves rustled gently, some were crushed under their feet.

“What did you do?” Lariette asked, tilting her chin to look at Ruediger, “I thought you forgot your phone. Did you misplace it? Or was there something else?”

Lariette’s questions earned chuckles from Ruediger. Pulling her closer by the shoulders, he winked, “You’ll find out soon.”

Lariette eyed Ruediger suspiciously, only to receive more laughter from him. In the end, she simply nestled closer to him as they walked. She wouldn’t say no to additional heat in this cold weather.

When they reached the cottage, Lariette slowed her steps, feeling something strange. She looked around, then realized only the garden lights were on. The interior was dimmed.

“That’s odd. Why is it so dark inside? Eddy, did you turn the lights off?”

Before they left for Melissa and Paul’s home, Lariette was certain they only switched off the bedroom lights, leaving the rest on. Now, the interior was dark, saved for a few faint glimmers of golden light reflected to the windows, covered by curtains.

Ruediger turned to Lariette, giving her a small yet anticipating smile, “Lettie, why don’t you go see for yourself?”

Blinking, Lariette furrowed her brows. She stepped forward, followed closely by Ruediger from behind. After unlocking the door, she gently pushed it open.

What greeted her inside stole her breath.

“Eddy…”

The hallway was dim, lit only by small flower LED lights, lining the path. A warm, subtle fragrance hung in the air, rising to the tip of her nose. Velvety petals of tulips and roses had been scattered on the floor, creating a gentle path that led further inside.

“Did you…” Lariette breathed, turning back to the smiling Ruediger, “Did you do this? How?”

Ruediger stepped in behind Lariette, closing the door quietly. Once he replied, his voice was low with a hint of worries, “I hope you’ll love this surprise. Tonight should be a special occasion, yes?”

Lariette’s cheeks flushed, understanding what Ruediger meant. As she smiled at him, her sapphire eyes glimmering in the soft light.

“Yes. You make it more special, Eddy. Hehe, tho I don’t know how did you pull this off.”

Where did he get all these items? Did he already bring them from the city?

The questions popped into her mind, but she deemed they were not important now.

Just seeing how tenderly Ruediger gazed at her was enough to quicken Lariette’s heartbeat, more so when she remembered what would happen between them tonight.

“That,” Ruediger smirked, “I’ll answer you later. Let’s go in.”

“Oh… okay,” Lariette blushed.

Ruediger held Lariette by the waist before they stepped further inside. The scattered petals crunched beneath their home slippers.

Following the soft trail of petals to the bedroom, the glow from the flower lights bathed the hallway in a dreamy warmth. The floral, comforting and rich scent of the reed diffusers drifted through the air.

Once they reached the bedroom, Ruediger gently nudged Lariette to open the door. Once again, a beautiful and dreamy scene welcomed her.

Stopping at the doorway, Lariette’s lips parted slightly as she took in the sight. Her heart thumped, louder this time.

“This is…” Lariette whispered, her voice caught, “Thoughtful and beautiful, Eddy.”

Ruediger stood beside Lariette, his eyes not on the room but on her. He smiled, “You’re beautiful, Lettie. Always. Inside and out.”

Lariette turned to Ruediger, her lips melted into a smile. Standing on her tiptoe, she wrapped her arms around his neck. He rested his forehead on hers.

“You deserve everything beautiful and special, Lettie,” Ruediger whispered, his voice imbued with unyielding affection as he hugged her waist, “I love you.”

Leaning in, Ruediger seized Lariette’s lips. They held each other quietly, then kissed, slow and unhurried before it deepened. The tenderness of the night wrapped around them.

Without breaking the kiss, Ruediger swept Lariette into his arms before carrying her to the bed. He sat her down on his lap, one arm around her waist while the other secured the back of his neck.

“Lettie, my love,” Ruediger breathed over Lariette’s lips, then pulled away slightly to look into her eyes, “Still alright? Shall we continue?”

Lariette met Ruediger’s gaze, her palms cupping his face. She saw the overflowing affection and care as he smiled at her.

“I’m fine,” Lariette murmured, her gaze softened, “I want you, Eddy.”

Ruediger smirked, “I want you too, Lettie.”

The golden glow of the flower lights illuminated them as their lips met again.
