Chapter 35: They’re Not a Bright Bunch
Lariette didn’t know what got to her but, Damien’s continuous accusation snapped the thin thread of her patience. She flung the knife to the trashy man without a second thought.
Well, it seemed like her fondness for throwing darts, and the occasional archery, paid off. She managed to scare the trash with her skill.
Ah~ How satisfying.
Damien was still scared shitless. His mouth gaped open as he tried to retort but, no words came out of it. Colors had yet to return to his face.
Shrugging, Lariette spoke without filtering her words, “I feel sorry for your mistress so I didn’t aim for your puny dick. Well, she’ll run off to another man soon. You don’t have much to offer, to be frank.”
Lariette’s remarks scandalized Damien. The red color of shame heated his previously pale face. Shaking in anger, his chest rose and fell at a rapid rate while his finger pointed at her.
“Y-you! How vulgar! You…”
“HAHAHA! Wow~ That’s so funny!”
Rafael’s laughter blared across the dining room. Raising both arms high, he clapped his hands loudly, the echoes offending Damien.
“Rafael, behave,” Samantha hissed, annoyed by what was happening, “Lariette, you too. Shut your mouth if you have nothing good to speak.”
“Aren’t you ashamed to cause such a commotion?” Jonathan sternly told Lariette off, his gaze blading with fury, “Why are you even here if this is how you behaved?”
Mr. and Mrs. Silvera stared dissatisfiedly at Lariette, thinking what Jonathan and Samantha said was true. Despite being the real heiress, her attitude still reeked of a country bumpkin.
Matthias and Alana said nothing. They simply watched the chaos unfolding.
Jonathan and Samantha’s angry remarks didn’t even put a dent in Lariette’s calm look. After almost a decade, she was already used to their biased treatment.
Well, despite being used to it, her heart still hurt.
‘It’s fine, Lari. You’ll be fine. You’ll be fine eventually.’
Sweeping her gaze across the dining room, Lariette uttered, “I’m sorry for causing this commotion openly. I should’ve done it when he’s alone.”
Damien flinched, understanding what Lariette meant. He timidly clenched his legs, afraid of being the next victim of her knife-throwing.
All thoughts about begging Lariette to take him back vanished from Damien’s mind.
“My husband and I will take our leave now. Resume your chit-chat.”
Ruediger rose to his feet. Smiling, a look of admiration glinting in his emerald eyes as he stared at the composed Lariette.
“Go! Just go!” Samantha hissed, “You just came here to ruin this dinner, aren’t you? You’ve made Phanie upset!”
Samantha tried her best not to lash out when the Silvera family was here but, Lariette’s continuous defiance made her reach her limit.
Never once did she expect to see this useless and meek daughter of hers pull such a stunt!
“Your mother is right,” Jonathan chimed in, his gaze clouded by suppressed anger, “Why came here if you wanted to ruin the dinner?”
Tilting her head, Lariette’s cold gaze fell on Jonathan. She was already used to seeing her father—the sperm donor—getting mad at her whether for valid or invalid reasons.
“I have to stand up for myself because you’ve never done it for me. What were you doing when someone degraded your daughter into a whore? You did nothing.”
Lariette shifted her eyes from Jonathan to Stephanie. Tears pooled in the blond lady’s eyes, waiting to trickle down her face.
Stephanie stared at Lariette as if the latter had wronged her terribly. Seeing the innocent look irked her but, Lariette was in no mood to further this fight.

Spinning on her heels, Lariette turned to Ruediger, “Let’s go.”
Today was very long and exhausting. Lariette hoped to keep the genuine bliss that dawned on her from this morning to when she spent at her grandfather’s house.
Staying here longer would just eradicate the last piece of her happiness.
Ruediger simply nodded. He reached out for her palm to which Lariette gladly linked their hands together. As usual, his grasp was comforting and gave a safe vibe.
Lariette and Ruediger headed to the dining room entrance, leaving the oppressing atmosphere behind. Pairs of eyes watched their departure until their figures disappeared.
Finally…
Lariette exhaled a long sigh. Her initially squared shoulders slumped down as the tension constricting her heart gradually faded, allowing her to breathe easier.
Now that she didn’t feel pressured, Lariette glanced at Ruediger, throwing a sheepish smile as they walked down the hallway. Their hands were still interlinked.
“I should call my grandpa tomorrow morning. He must be surprised. I’ve never acted unruly like that before. We even have guests around.”
Ruediger gazed meaningfully at Lariette. Squeezing her hand, he replied, “You did well. If they’re afraid of causing trouble in front of the guests, they shouldn’t start anything foolish.”
Lariette placed her sapphire eyes on Ruediger’s emerald ones for a moment longer. His last remark tickled her heart, causing her smile to soften.
“They’re not a bright bunch. Especially…”
“STOP!”
The sudden yelling hollered across the hallway, coming from behind. Lariette and Ruediger halted their steps, confusion flickering in their eyes.
Once they turned around, Lariette and Ruediger saw the wrathful figure of Alaric. The latter came chasing after them, his face twisted in anger.
“Are you happy now? You’ve ruined this dinner! You’re jealous because it’s to celebrate Phanie’s wedding!”
Alaric’s voice flooded with frustration and outrage. Lariette and Ruediger’s actions pissed him off terribly, pushing him to chase after them.
Lariette scoffed, thinking she had just heard the biggest joke for today. The incredulous way she stared at Alaric expressed how stupid she believed he was.
“Jealous? Alaric Elsher, think whatever you want. Don’t you hate me? So, don’t go out of your way to bother me. Leave me alone.”
Lariette didn’t give Alaric any chance to speak. She better fired continuously instead of letting this stupid oaf of a man irritate her.
“Just admit that…”
“Alaric!”
Another voice echoed in the hallway. Lariette was surprised to see Declan and Rafael appearing behind Alaric. Both wore the same look of frustration on their faces.
Lariette groaned inwardly.
Oh, gosh. She didn’t want to deal with them any longer. She just wanted to go home and crawl into her bed.
Lariette retracted her hand from Ruediger’s grasp, changing to holding his arm. Looking at her three brothers, she said loud and clear, “We’re leaving.”
“Lari…”
“Eddy, run!”
“…huh?”
Before Rafael or any of her brothers could say anything, Lariette dragged Ruediger along, half-walking and half-running.
The crimson-haired man simply quickened his pace, following her action. The lady’s luscious hair tousled behind as she ran on her kitten heels.
“L-Lari! Don’t go yet!”
“Lariette!”
The loud and hasty echoes of their footsteps rang above Declan and Rafael’s yelling. In no time, the newlyweds were out of the manor. All the callings be damned.
Lariette swiftly climbed into Ruediger’s truck despite not seeing any shadows of her three brothers behind. Pulling the seatbelt, she latched it to the buckle.
“Ha! Hahaha! Hurry, drive!”
Ruediger glanced at Lariette as he switched on the engine. Her sudden laughter earned an amused smile from him.
“Okay, we’re going back.”
To his new home, with her.
Lariette exclaimed, her tone sounding a tad bit happier, “Yes!”
Pushing the gas pedal, Ruediger reversed before driving the navy blue truck smoothly down the long driveway, leaving the imposing manor behind.
