Chapter 44: Her Only Best Friend
Ruediger’s new home office was finally set up properly around one in the afternoon. After unpacking and arranging, the place took on a sleek and modern look.
Aside from the huge desk, books and a few other equipment that belonged to Ruediger, other items were also placed in the room.
Two plush chairs in the color sage green were tucked in a corner with a white table standing between them. The sunlight filtered through the white lace curtain, illuminating the office.
Lariette hoped Ruediger would treat this room as the place he could relax, including the bedroom during the duration of their marriage.
“What do you want for lunch? Something light or heavy?” asked Ruediger, already imagining the dishes he could make for lunch.
“Takeout for lunch, is that okay? We’re both tired. Let’s just relax while waiting for the delivery. Oh, what do you wanna eat?”
Lariette and Ruediger had just walked out of the home office when she suggested ordering takeout. His response earned laughter from her.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to cook? I can whip up something quick.”
Ruediger asked while taking the tie securing his hair into a ponytail off. Raking his fingers through his hair, the crimson locks draped messily below his shoulders.
Lariette glanced at Ruediger’s hair, silently thinking how shiny the strands were under the sunlight. Somehow, his hair looked better than hers.
Should she go and pamper herself at a hair salon soon?
Cough.
Shaking her head, Lariette once again refused the offer, “Really, no. You can cook tomorrow’s lunch tho. I’ll look forward to it.”
“Then, let me order our lunch,” Ruediger fished out the phone from the pocket of his pants, “I won’t take no as the answer, en?”
“Hehe, okay~”
The newlyweds ordered some Chinese food. Like during breakfast hours ago, they chatted over the meal. Fortunately, no disturbance happened this time around.
The little chaos caused by Damien this morning no longer bothered Lariette. She also kept his number under her blocked list.
If he used unknown numbers to get to her? All would be screened and rejected.
“When should we go to the cafe?” asked Lariette after taking a sip of her iced tea, “Six-thirty?”
Ruediger nodded, easily agreeing with Lariette, “That’s fine enough. We’ll arrive right before the dinner.”
Lariette received a text from Madeline, reminding her about the celebratory party that would take place tonight at Suit & Tie. She still put her phone on the Do Not Disturb mode.
Lariette didn’t bother herself with the tens to over one hundred angry messages and voicemails she received from Stephanie, Samantha and Alaric. They were still very upset over what happened during dinner.
Jonathan was quiet while Chairman Delaney, including Declan and Rafael, told Lariette not to worry about the aftermath of the chaotic dinner.
Lariette called her maternal grandfather to check on him. As for Declan and Rafael, she only sent a quick thank you message.
Despite still feeling uncomfortable with her first and third brothers, Lariette couldn’t deny they did step up to defend her last night.
Unlike how they behaved in the last decade.
Lariette swiftly shut the thought down. Even though she noticed Declan and Rafael started treating her better in the past year, she was still reluctant to approach them.
Putting down the iced tea on the dining table, Lariette said, “I think it’ll be just us, Maddie and her staff. I have friends but, they mostly still live in the village where I came from.”
Lariette occasionally kept in touch with her friends and neighbors from the village she lived with the late Mrs. Evans. They earnestly took care of her and her granny back when they lived in poverty.

Thus, Lariette repaid them for all of their good deeds. She wished the small village Moonville would prosper more.
Ruediger lowered his chopsticks as Lariette brought up Moonville. Without showing anything was amiss on his face, he asked, “How about the friends you made here? Is Maddie your only friend?”
Madeline often talked about Lariette to Ruediger but, it didn’t mean he knew everything about her. Seizing the chance to do so, he brought up his own inquiries.
Jonathan and Samantha enrolled Lariette in the same private school as Stephanie upon her return to the Elsher family. Unfortunately, she didn’t have much fond memories of that place.
Most of the students adored Stephanie thus, they distanced themselves from Lariette. Some of them, for example, the lofty Amber, looked down on her and called her a country bumpkin.
Lariette tilted up her head, recalling her days in the private school before shifting to her university days.
“I don’t have friends in high school. Not many in the uni either. Oh, have Maddie told you we met during one of our lectures?”
A chuckle slipped out between Ruediger’s lips. Nodding once, he said, “Yes. She called you her savior.”
Lariette laughed along. The memory of that day was still clear in her head.
Despite not being active in high society, the current circulating rumors still reached Lariette. She had already heard about the return of the Alvord family’s heiress before she began her new semester.
Madeline enrolled in the same language course as Lariette. Somehow, they found themselves sitting together during one of the classes.
On that day, Lariette noticed how uncomfortable Madeline was. The lecture hall was mostly empty because the students and the lecturer hadn’t come.
Turned out, that her period suddenly started and…
“Wear this and take this. Go to the toilet. I’ll handle your seat.”
Lariette tied her cardigan around Madeline’s waist before secretly handing her a pad. After shooing the lady, she cleaned the little stain left on the plastic chair.
“T-thank you! I don’t know how to repay you. Please, is there anything I can do for you?”
Once Madeline returned, she profusely thanked Lariette. The latter cheekily asked Madeline to buy her iced chocolate.
The ladies ended up going to a cafe after class.
That day marked the beginning of their friendship. The two ladies slowly grew closer until nothing could tear them apart, not even the animosity between the Elsher and the Alvord family.
“Well, I do have a few friends in uni,” said Lariette with a smile, “But, I’ve never been close to them. Maddie is my only best friend.”
Ruediger simply nodded. He couldn’t help but think if this was all due to fate linking them.
If not for Madeline, Ruediger doubted he would ever find Lariette again.
But, that story was for another time.
