Chapter 48: He Doesn’t Need Snakes to Bring Him Down
When Lariette led Ruediger to the rooftop garden of Lumina Spring, Vincent had just left Suit & Tie. His luxury sedan glided down the expressway, heading to his private residence.
The passing street lampposts illuminated Vincent’s troubled face. A deep frown marred his forehead as he recalled the event that had just happened outside Madeline’s cafe.
‘I knew the courthouse data is true but… I really didn’t expect him to marry someone from the Elsher.’
Vincent tapped one finger on the steering wheel, the quick rhythm conveying the unrest in his heart. He had been feeling uneasy from the moment he discovered Ruediger’s marriage to Lariette Elsher.
Vincent tried to keep the news from reaching Matthew, his and Ruediger’s father. He hadn’t prepared himself to face the older man’s hellish fury once he discovered this marriage.
Well, anything his elder brother did would just elicit an inferno of wrath from their father, so…
Shaking his head, Vincent tried holding back the threatening headache. Sooner or later, this news would definitely reach their father.
‘Did Maddie set them up? Surely, she did.’
Vincent had always known Madeline was friends with the returned heiress of the Elsher family. If he was not mistaken, the two ladies met in one of the national universities where they studied.
Vincent rarely met Madeline because the latter mostly avoided the Alvord family gatherings. Even if they saw each other, his cousin usually ignored him.
“Haaa…”
A heavy sigh escaped Vincent’s lips as he recalled the heated argument between him and Madeline after Ruediger and Lariette left.
His cousin, although younger than him, didn’t hold back as she told him off.
“You’ve ignored Rudy for decades! Why bother now? Stay the fuck away from him!”
“Maddie, I came here for an explanation. He…”
“He doesn’t owe you any explanation! He’s an adult! Let him marry who he wants!”
Vincent tried to calm Madeline down but, she didn’t want to hear anything more from him. More words ladened with curses came out from the petite lady.
“So what if Rudy got married to my friend? He’s not important to you guys, doesn’t he? Keep your hypocritical ass to yourself.”
“Rudy is happy and doing fine without you. He doesn’t need snakes to bring him down.”
Driven by frustration, Vincent stopped centering their argument over Ruediger. After all, Madeline was being extremely protective of his estranged elder brother.
Well, it was nothing beyond expectation.
After all, Ruediger lived with Madeline together for decades before they returned to Velondia. Surely the cousins became even closer than blood siblings during the long years.
“Maddie, are you happy staying away from our family? Even helps to stir some mess. So much so that you let Rudy marry someone from the Elsher family?”
Madeline didn’t hesitate at all as she quickly answered Vincent. The look on her face showed how disgustingly stupid she thought he was.
“My mom and Rudy are my only family. If not for her, I’d have already ripped the Alvord name off me. Scram!”
Vincent had no other choice but to leave. Madeline made it clear how much she despised him that she didn’t care to behave within the close vicinity of her cafe.
‘Father is away right now. I can only hope Mr. Langston will keep his promise.’
Matthew was currently out of the country, traveling to a few different places for work purposes. If there were no changes, he should return early next week.
Today, Vincent reached out to Matthew’s close aide, Bernard Langston. He told the middle-aged man to stop the marriage news from reaching his father if Mr. Langston heard about it.

“I’ll tell my father myself once he returns. Please, Mr. Langston.”
The loyal aide of Matthew promised he wouldn’t say a word about Rudiger’s surprising marriage to the chairman of the Alvord Corporation.
Unfortunately for Vincent, Mr. Langston’s next remark stopped him from breathing out in relief.
“Young Master Vincent, I won’t bring the issue up. However, I’ll be truthful to the chairman if he ever asked.”
Vincent begrudgingly agreed. Mr. Langston’s full loyalty was to his father, not him. He could only hope his father wouldn’t ever hear anything about Ruediger’s marriage until his return.
Vincent forgot the last time Ruediger and Matthew crossed paths with one another. Perhaps, right after his elder brother’s return from Norvonna.
This meant… five years had passed. Or, had they met in secret?
He doubted it.
As Vincent slowed down the speed at an intersection, his mind was reminded of Lariette. Tonight was the first time he saw the returned heiress of the Elsher family up close.
“Lariette Elsher… When did their relationship start?” Vincent uttered, his voice a low murmur in the sedan, “I should look into this.”
The marriage news hit Vincent all of a sudden. He didn’t have the chance to investigate the relationship between Ruediger and Lariette yet.
For now, Vincent assumed the two people were connected through Madeline. The young lady was the only mutual link between them.
Or… Was there something more?
Frowning, Vincent lightly shook his head, rejecting the idea.
“My work list is already long. Now I have to care about this too? I still couldn’t meet him yet.”
Another sigh left Vincent’s mouth. He couldn’t imagine the extent of his father’s anger upon learning this news.
Vincent was tasked with approaching the master of Edenia Avenue, the luxury mall. Even after years, its ownership remained a mystery.
But…
Each of his attempts failed! The most he could get was meeting the CEO! Everyone knew that he was the only link between the secret chairman to the outside world.
Edenia Avenue quickly rose higher, allowing it a spot among the top malls. People had been guessing who the chairman was but, so far they couldn’t even get a glimpse of his shadows.
Mr. R. That was what people called him.
Unknown appearance, unknown background and even unknown citizenship.
Some said Mr. R was from another country while the others guessed he was from Velondia.
Vincent inadvertently recalled his latest meeting with the CEO of Edenia Avenue, Edmund Knowles. The latter’s words echoed again in his mind.
“Our chairman prefers how things currently are. Please don’t make this difficult for me, Mr. Alvord.”
Edmund clearly insinuated to Vincent that it was pointless to try looking for Mr. R. The enigmatic figure was content living far away from the limelight.
“Everything’s a mess.”
Mumbling under his breath, Vincent sped up down the road. The taillights chased after the car. The loud buzz of the engine blared in the air.
