Chapter 50: Feel Free to Uncover the Puzzles
Lariette lay on her back on the soft mattress, her luscious chocolate-brown hair splayed on the satin pillow sheet. Her chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm yet, showed no signs of sleepiness.
One part of the windows wasn’t concealed by the curtain, allowing the moonlight to filter through the glass. Its radiance illuminated the dimmed bedroom and the slender figure on the bed.
Lariette’s sapphire blue eyes lay on the ceiling, her thoughts whirling to replay the end of her conversation with Ruediger on the rooftop earlier.
“Lettie, you won’t have to worry about him again. He’ll leave this country soon.”
Ruediger’s voice, velvety and hoarse at the same time, reassured Lariette as if he was trying to diminish her lingering concern about the situation.
Under the soft fairy lights of the arch, his expression remained comforting and gentle—the same look she had been accustomed to from him.
Without hesitating, Lariette voiced her thoughts. Being surrounded by the calm night, she became truthful with Ruediger, a man she had been getting close to recently.
“You kept surprising me tonight, Eddy. From your close friendship with Mr. Nathaniel to your plan to chase Damien away. You seem a little more mysterious now.” ”
Lariette swiftly added after a long pause, her eyes remained on Ruediger’s face.
“Well, I guess it’s true I haven’t known you well. We immediately got married after all.”
Ruediger’s answer to Lariette’s frankness was a mellow smile, followed by soft chuckles. The melody blended with the faint echoes of vehicles moving around down below.
“Lettie, it’s true you haven’t really known me yet. If you think I’m mysterious, feel free to uncover all the puzzles about me.”
Lariette’s cheeks flushed upon listening to Ruediger’s words, spoken ever so softly. She simply nodded in response before telling him that they should return to the apartment.
“Aren’t you tired, Eddy? I feel sleepy now.”
“Yes, let’s go back.”
Only silence, saved for their footsteps, accompanied Lariette and Ruediger as they left the rooftop. The lights sprinkled on their backs, casting their elongated shadows on the floor.
Despite everything, the hush was comforting.
“Good night, Eddy.”
“Sleep well, Lettie.”
Upon arriving at the apartment, Lariette and Ruediger exchanged good night wishes, both seemed exhausted at the current hour. Midnight would grace the city with its presence soon.
The crimson-haired man promised another hearty breakfast to which the lady replied with an enthusiastic nod. She couldn’t ever say no to his delicious cooking.
Then, their backs faced one another as they turned around before disappearing inside their respective bedrooms.
Blinking slowly, Lariette returned her focus to the present. Speaking to herself, her voice a hush in the quiet bedroom.
“I start to think… Eddy isn’t what he seems to people.”
Aside from Madeline, her mother and the chosen people, no one would ever expect that Ruediger and Nathaniel Faulkner were sworn brothers.
The two men differed in age with Nathaniel being five years of Ruediger’s senior. They seemed to have nothing in common to lead them to cross paths with one another but, they still did.
‘I wonder how they met. Eddy said they had been friends for over one decade.’
Lariette still remembered her conversation with Ruediger from this morning. The man said he started working with Faulkner Investment once the base was relocated to Velondia.
It wouldn’t be too far-fetched to assume Ruediger returned to Velondia because of Nathaniel. He found a new family in the latter despite not sharing the same blood.

‘Maybe he will tell me someday. Will it be an epic tale or a simple one?’
For some reason, Lariette believed Ruediger was telling the truth about him actually holding more mysteries than what he showed on the surface. She couldn’t deny she was eager to find them out.
As long as he allowed her to.
But, Lariette wouldn’t pry into anything she thought might bring discomfort to Ruediger. For example, about his strained relationship with the Alvord family.
Vincent’s sudden appearance tonight surprised Lariette. She could sense how the air around both Ruediger and Madeline changed once the former showed up.
‘Maddie… She rarely lashed out like that.’
The few times Madeline reeked of hostility were when it involved her cheating father, Martin Alvord, including Stephanie. Thus, it was kind of shocking to see her friend do the same to another person.
The internal affairs of the Alvord family were as messy as the Elshers.
Lariette turned to one side, letting her gaze wander to the windows. The blanket rustled around her. Outside, the city lights shimmered in the backdrop of the night, casting shadows across the walls.
Avaloria City was very much alive even during the late nights but, Lariette missed the sky full of twinkling stars at Moonville Village more.
‘I better sleep. Today was exhausting.’
Pulling the blanket to cover her figure properly, Lariette closed her eyes. The thought that came to her mind before she drifted to sleep was about the man who shared the same roof with her.
Would he get to sleep well tonight?
After what happened with his younger brother?
Lariette’s thought ceased once her consciousness crossed the dreamland. Her breath was soft in the tranquility of the night.
On the following day, Sunday, it was rather peaceful for Lariette. The Elsher family had stopped bothering her, something she was grateful but, still cautious about.
Nevertheless, Lariette didn’t want to burden her mind with thoughts about Stephanie, Samantha and the others. She would spare the energy during the fake heiress’ wedding next week.
Lariette enjoyed the dishes made by Ruediger early in the morning. He made some tomato and feta baked eggs. She had to refrain herself from getting her third serving.
Lariette persuaded herself to move around after breakfast. She didn’t want to lie down as soon as she finished eating.
Before noon, Mr. Hayes came to meet Lariette. The apartment manager personally relayed about his investigation regarding Damien’s trespassing. What he said shocked her.
“Mr. Schuman threatened an old cleaning lady to give him access. She was scared of him.”
Lariette scoffed as she found out how trashier Damien could be. She told Mr. Hayes not to worry about the man again because she would handle him herself.
How dare he use his power to oppress the weak?
But, he wouldn’t get to do it for longer anymore.
Ruediger sat next to Lariette when Mr. Hayes came to visit. He reassured the older man, saying they would make sure no such thing with Damien happened again.
Once Mr. Hayes left, Lariette took some time to calm herself. Ruediger’s words helped to soothe her nerves.
“Nate will drop the bomb on Chairman Schuman this Tuesday. He’ll summon that old man and his son to his office.”
Lariette drew her lips into a smirk upon listening to Ruediger. She couldn’t wait to hear more good news from Nathaniel’s side tomorrow.
But, before that…
“Eddy, will we have tea time at the rooftop later today?”
Ruediger blinked before laughter slipped out his mouth. He was amused to hear Lariette could still focus on food at a time like this.
“Sure, milady. Look forward to it.”
Lariette grinned. She tossed every unnecessary thought about Damien far out of her mind.
