Chapter 52: No Innocent Scapegoat
Lariette didn’t let her chance encounter with Alaric bother her, unwilling to ruin her morning. She knew the man wouldn’t risk causing a ruckus in his own workplace.
Alaric had more to lose if he decided to shout and taunt Lariette like how he often did in the Elsher family home. He wouldn’t ever let his colleagues and subordinates see him as a bully.
“Miss Lariette Elsher, please come in.”
Lariette and Ruediger had just sat on the bench chairs lining one side of the hallway when the nurse called for the former, addressing the lady using the name registered on the hospital record.
“Yes, I’m coming.”
Rising to her feet, Lariette glanced at Ruediger while saying, “Wait for me here. The checkup shouldn’t be long.”
Even though Ruediger himself offered to accompany her today, Lariette felt bad if he had a long wait. He said he took the day off work just to chaperone her to the hospital.
Well… even if Ruediger was good friends with the company CEO, he still shouldn’t take advantage ah.
“Nah, don’t worry about it,” Ruediger chuckled, helplessness imbuing in his eyes, “The doctor will decide on that. Surely she has to be thorough when doing any checkup.”
Ruediger didn’t mind whether the wait would be short or long. It was better than having the doctor doing the examinations half-heartedly and causing issues for Lariette next.
“Hehe, I’ll buy you a drink later. Either coffee, tea or something else,” Lariette smiled softly, understanding the concern beneath Ruediger’s words, “I’ll go in now.”
Waving at Ruediger, Lariette hurried to Dr. Carter’s office. Her figure vanished once the door was closed, leaving Ruediger alone on the bench.
“Treat me to a drink, huh?”
Ruediger smiled, satisfied with the simple promise from Lariette. Leaning comfortably against the back cushion, he fished out the phone from the pocket of his khaki jacket.
‘The meeting should be ongoing now.”
Tapping and swiping a few times on the screen, Ruediger opened his private chat with Nathaniel. He reread the previous exchange between them.
[Nate: Nothing to worry about. That cowardly old man won’t dare to defy me]
[Nate: I’ll make sure he leaves by this week]
Ruediger let out a faint hum, hoping this issue would be settled as soon as possible.
Following Damien’s appearance at Lumina Spring last Saturday and Ruediger’s discussion with Lariette, Nathaniel would have the crucial meeting with Chairman Schuman and his garbage son this morning.
The meeting was actually a continuation of the one Nathaniel had with them before the dinner at the Elsher family’s home last Friday[01].
In the first one, Nathaniel chewed the father and son out, also warning them to come up with a satisfying answer for him.
Nathaniel’s intention was clear. He wanted to put the blame on the person responsible for this mess—Damien Schuman. He refused to accept an innocent scapegoat.
Following the allegations of Damien misusing the funds, Nathaniel pressured Chairman Schuman to demote his son from his current position in the company.
And, now…
Damien wouldn’t just be demoted from his senior managing role but, he had to start from the bottom at a branch abroad.
Such a punishment would blow his inflated ego to dust.
‘I can’t wait to share this good news with Lettie.’
Tearing his emerald eyes away from the phone, Ruediger looked at the closed door of Dr. Carter’s office. He hoped the examinations of Lariette’s checkup would be nothing but good.

Inside the room, Lariette sat comfortably facing Dr. Carter. The female doctor did a few examinations before reviewing the former’s new charts. The process took time but, not too long.
“Well, Miss Elsher,” Dr. Carter began with a reassuring smile, “Everything looks good. I found no signs of lingering issues from the accident.”
“Really, doctor?”
Lariette’s eyes glinted in delight, her happiness brightening her whole face. Even though she could tell her body had recovered, hearing it from the doctor gave her more reassurance.
Dr. Carter nodded once before gently adding, “I’ll still recommend that you continue taking it easy for another week or two, Miss Elsher. If you want to do exercises, please pick light activities. And the most important thing, always listen to your body.”
“I will!” Lariette exhaled a sigh of relief. A sheepish smile was drawn on her lips, “Dr. Carter, thank you. I was actually worried if there might still be some complications.”
“Fortunately, nothing of the sort,” replied Dr. Carter as she closed the file, “Either way, it’s always good to check. You’re on track to a full recovery, Miss Elsher. Just make sure to avoid anything strenuous.”
“I will. Thank you again, Dr. Carter.”
Lariette was scheduled for another appointment, dated in two weeks. Dr. Carter said if the results were excellent again, she didn’t have to continue coming for a routine checkup.
“En? Where is he?”
Lariette came out of the doctor’s office, expecting to find Ruediger but, he was nowhere to be seen. Thinking he might step away for a little, perhaps going to the toilet, she waited for him on the bench.
Lariette’s guess was correct. She had just noticed the new text Ruediger sent her, saying he would be in the toilet for a moment.
“Excuse me, Miss Elsher?”
Looking up from the phone, Lariette’s eyes widened in recognition. A young nurse stood opposite her, the same one who used to attend to her during her hospitalization.
“Good morning, nurse,” Lariette rose to her feet, happy to see a familiar face, “Busy with morning rounds, en?”
The nurse nodded, pleased to know Lariette recognized her. She glanced in a direction before asking, “Seems like you have a company today? I’ve never seen you two together so, I didn’t expect you to know each other.”
“…what do you mean?” Lariette blinked, confusion swirling in her eyes, “My company? Are you talking about my husband?”
Lariette’s confusion deepened when the young nurse suddenly exclaimed excitedly, her eyes glimmering with joy.
“Your husband? Gosh! That’s why he readily donated his blood for you, en? Ah, but you’re not registered as married. Did you two just get married?”
Taken aback, Lariette’s eyes widened further.
“…huh?”
What did this nurse mean?
Donated blood for her?
…Ruediger?
