Chapter 53: This Calls For a Celebration
“I really thought he was just a passerby. Hehe, isn’t it romantic to have your husband as the blood donor?”
“I didn’t see him anymore after that so, I didn’t remember until I saw him with you just now.”
The nurse’s words resounded in Lariette’s mind as she sat quietly on the bench. Clasping her hands together, she unconsciously straightened her posture, her face expressing doubts.
Drowning in the deep pool of her thoughts, Lariette didn’t notice people walking past the hallway. Only a few people waited outside Dr. Carter’s office. She also forgot about Ruediger going to the restroom.
The only thing that weighed in her mind was the newly discovered info from the nurse, about the mysterious blood donor she heard from the nurse once before[01].
The man who donated blood for her… when she desperately needed it… was Ruediger?
But, how did it happen?
And… why was he there when she needed the emergency surgery?
Aside from the paramedics, Lariette knew one of Madeline’s staff, Joshua was also inside the ambulance. The young man was on his way to work when he witnessed the accident that happened near the butler cafe.
Joshua recognized Lariette because she often met Madeline at the cafe. While contacting the latter, he accompanied the injured Lariette in the ambulance.
Joshua left once Madeline arrived at the hospital. There was no mention of Ruediger at all, not even from Madeline.
‘He donated blood for me.’
Blinking, Lariette slowly shifted her blank gaze from the floor to her left arm. She was still unconscious when the blood transfusion took place but, the mark left by the needle was ingrained in her mind.
‘I don’t think the nurse was lying, but… why didn’t he tell me?’
Lariette didn’t know exactly what she felt, but it was nothing like sadness or disappointment. It’s more to being confused.
‘It’s fine. Let’s ask him later.’
Putting a smile on her lips, albeit faint, Lariette calmed herself down. She believed Ruediger had his reason not to claim the credit as one of her saviors on that day.
Knowing him, he wouldn’t even think it was a big deal.
‘If he mentioned it when we first met, I’d immediately agree to take him as my partner.’
Lariette chuckled to herself, amused by her own thoughts. She recalled when Ruediger appeared out of nowhere, offering to be her partner in this contract marriage.
Instead of trying to score brownie points by saying he donated blood to her, he respectfully gave her time to think and decide about it.
“Lettie.”
Looking in the direction of where her name was called, Lariette saw Ruediger approaching with a wide smile on his face. He looked more cheerful than before.
Almost half-running in the hallway, Ruediger’s crimson fringes swayed above his forehead. The messy locks were tousled by the breeze from his quick movement.
“Eddy.”
Lariette stood up, happy to see Ruediger again. Despite wanting to ask about the blood donation, she decided to delay it for now.
“How’s your checkup? Are the results good? What did the doctor say?”
Ruediger asked as soon as he reached Lariette. His emerald eyes scanned her face, trying to find any signs of distress. Fortunately, she looked better.
Did the doctor say something that lifted her mood further? If yes, that was good.

“My results came out excellent,” Lariette tugged at a corner of Ruediger’s jacket sleeve, urging him to sit, “She said I’d recovered well so far. Still, I can’t do anything strenuous.”
Ruediger lowered himself on the bench right beside Lariette. The relief flooding in his heart was expressed on his face, lighting up his whole countenance.
“That’s good to hear. Well, I also have some good news to share with you,” Ruediger curled his lips into a grin, mischief flickering in his eyes, “Seems like today is a good day for you.”
Blinking, Lariette asked, her voice a low hum in the hallway, “…is it about Damien?”
Ruediger quickly nodded, admitting to Lariette’s guess before explaining, “Chairman Schuman will transfer him to a branch in Chile. He might stay there for three years at least.”
“That’s great! Really! Eddy, thank you!”
Unable to refrain herself, Lariette exclaimed out loud. Her voice was perfectly audible in the corridor, attracting several people’s attention.
“…sorry.”
Aware of how expressive she reacted, Lariette quickly covered her mouth and lowered her chin. Heat emanated from her cheeks, casting a lovely shade of pink on her face.
Helplessness imbued Ruediger’s smile. He knew Lariette would be happy to hear this good news.
Ruediger received a phone call from Nathaniel on his way out of the restroom. The latter informed him how the meeting ended. It didn’t take long despite Damien’s fervent protests.
“Chairman Schuman knew he couldn’t afford to test my patience anymore. That useless son of his will leave by this week.”
Nathaniel warned Chairman Schuman and Damien that they would face more dire consequences if he knew the young man sneakily returned to Velondia. He also demanded regular reports about Damien’s work at the branch.
“Doesn’t this call for a celebration?” Ruediger chuckled, still amused by the adorable look on Lariette’s face, “I think your grandfather will love to hear about this.”
“Oh! I really need to tell him!”
Lariette nodded repeatedly, fully agreeing with Ruediger. She was aware of how much Chairman Delaney despised Damien, especially after the trashy man cheated on her.
“Then, let’s go to him now. Shall we, milady?”
Standing up, Ruediger offered his right palm to Lariette, his smile remained ever so soft for her. Her sapphire eyes collided with his emerald ones, seeing the silent joy in his orbs.
“Hehe, let’s go.”
Lariette let out some chuckles before placing her palm on his, letting Ruediger envelop her hand in his much bigger one.
Hand-in-hand, the husband and wife strode toward the elevator. Her left shoulder almost grazed his right upper arm as they walked in close proximity.
None of them realized their interaction was monitored by someone.
“Huh…”
Stepping out behind the wall connecting two hallways, Alaric’s narrowed eyes landed on Lariette’s and Ruediger’s backs. Dissatisfaction was evident on his face.
“Too bad I couldn’t hear what they talked about,” murmured Alaric under his breath, his brows furrowing, “What made that bumpkin scream like that?”
Alaric had just finished his discussion with fellow colleagues when he saw Lariette and Ruediger sitting together near Dr. Carter’s office. He was itching to go closer but, the crimson-haired man’s silent warning from earlier stopped him.
If not for being in his workplace, Alaric wouldn’t think twice about approaching Lariette and Ruediger. He was still upset about what that pair did during the previous dinner.
“How could she look that happy after making Mom and Phanie sad? Haven’t she felt guilty at all?”
Stephanie and Samantha’s mood worsened the past few days because of Lariette’s cruel stunt. They barely ate and did the hobbies they loved.
Alaric persuaded Stephanie and Samantha to focus on the wedding instead of the ungrateful rascal. Thankfully, his beloved sister and mother’s moods seemed to improve albeit a little.
“She won’t be happy for too long.”
Turning around, Alaric quickly left the hallway. He had made up his mind that Lariette did all this to hurt their family, especially Samantha and Stephanie.
Even if Declan and Rafael sided with Lariette, Alaric wouldn’t ever do so!
