Chapter 94: The Brothers’ Concern
Why did he feel this man possessed deep secrets?
‘…that’s not important now.’
Shaking his head slightly, Declan reminded himself to focus on the crucial matter at hand. His sharp gaze landed on the two men before he openly gazed at Ruediger.
“Our men will take them away. We’ll handle them from here on. What do you say, Mr. Alvord?”
“Sure,” Ruediger nodded. Shrugging, he smiled half-heartedly to Declan, “I believe you’ll investigate this properly. They acted weird. I think they’re under substances.”
“Yes. I’ll do that.”
Even without being told, Declan had planned to do so. No matter what the men’s motive was, also how they ended up here, he would investigate them thoroughly.
How dared they incite chaos here? In a place they didn’t belong, no less!
“Bring them to the boat.”
Raising one hand, Declan waved at the bodyguards, his voice stern. A few of them immediately came forward, hastily grabbed the two men to stand.
“Humph! Humph humph! HUMPH!”
The two men squirmed, once again begging for mercy. They almost stumbled to the mucky ground because of the ropes binding their feet. The impact made the mud splash on them.
The bodyguards didn’t let them waste anyone’s time further. Two of them procured a small knife from the inside of their jackets.
Slicing through the ropes binding them back-to-back and their feet, the men in black forced the two men to walk. They heavily guarded the assailants, not giving them any chance to escape.
Ruediger, Declan and Rafael watched them leave. In no time, the bodyguards and the men disappeared among the towering trees.
“Some will remain here to check the isle,” Declan muttered, his sapphire eyes darkening as a storm brewed in them, “Maybe they left some clues.”
“That’s certain,” Rafael grumbled, almost cursing under his breath, “Those idiots asked for it!”
Ruediger was unbothered by Declan and Rafael’s anger. He was just glad the intruders would be interrogated soon. Still, it was a pity he couldn’t torment them longer for what they did.
“Aren’t you going to check on Lettie?”
Taking a step forward, Ruediger glanced at the siblings behind one shoulder. His emerald eyes were unmistakably sharp under his crimson fringes.
Declan and Rafael froze before they nodded stiffly in sync. They indeed hoped to see Lariette but… only if she would allow it.
“…can we?” Rafael asked, his voice lacing with hesitancy, “I mean… she’s sick now. What if we just make her more upset?”
Declan said nothing but, he clearly thought the same thing as Rafael. Lines of concern marred his forehead.
Lariette accepted their sudden appearance at midnight on her birthday before but, it didn’t mean she wanted to see them when she was in a vulnerable state.
Still, Declan and Rafael followed Chairman Delaney here because they were too worried to wait on the island.
The brothers heard about the incident through their maternal grandfather.
Chairman Delaney contacted Declan, telling him that Lariette was in danger. The young man quickly pleaded to follow the former to the isle, which he was allowed to.
A worried Declan shared about what happened to Lariette with his family but, only Rafael shared the same concern as him. Both brothers rushed to meet Chairman Delaney at the port.
Ruediger quietly assessed the hesitancy on Declan and Rafael’s faces, lacing with fear. He understood what they meant, but…
Arching an eyebrow, Ruediger asked, “You won’t know unless you ask her.”

Without waiting for Declan and Rafael to reply, Ruediger strode toward the cabin. A faint smile hung on his lips once he heard them hurriedly following from behind.
Albeit hesitant, Declan and Rafael trailed after Ruediger. Countless thoughts about Lariette’s well-being were conjured in their minds.
How was she?
Did she suffer from anything else?
As the three men made their way to the cabin, a heartwarming yet funny scene was happening in the bedroom Lariette was supposed to sleep in.
“Lari… Oh, Lari…”
“Thank goodness, you’re alright…”
A helpless Lariette tried to calm the crying Chairman Delaney and Madeline. She was trapped in her grandfather’s hug while her friend stood by the bed, chanting incoherent words.
Chairman Delaney and Madeline’s appearances stirred Lariette from sleep. Before she could say anything, her grandfather had already hugged her.
“I’m fine. Nothing much happened to me. Hey, don’t cry! Grandpa!”
Laughing faintly, Lariette awkwardly patted Chairman Delaney’s back a few times. She felt bad for worrying him and Madeline but, the current situation seemed funny as well.
Chairman Delaney reluctantly loosened his arms around Lariette. Slightly pulling away, his teary eyes assessed his granddaughter from head to toe.
The cuts on Lariette’s arms and her bandaged feet fueled more into Chairman Delaney’s worries. Thankfully, his granddaughter didn’t suffer from more grave injuries.
Still…
“I won’t let them go easily,” seething with anger, Chairman Delaney hissed, “How dare they hurt my granddaughter! Do they think they’ve lived long enough?”
“True! True!” Madeline nodded her head, fully supporting Chairman Delaney’s remarks, “Don’t let them go! We should feed them to the dogs!”
Exhaling a soft sigh, Lariette was at a loss for words. She was amused by Chairman Delaney and Madeline’s behaviors, in sync with each other.
Lariette glanced at the wall clock, finding not much time had passed from when she began sleeping. Seeing Ruediger was nowhere, he might be in the backyard with the bodyguards.
“Anyway, I brought Dr. Larson along. Let him check you, okay, my dear?”
Even though both Ruediger and Lariette reassured Chairman Delaney that she was fine, the elderly man couldn’t rest easy until a doctor examined her.
More chuckles slipped from Lariette’s lips. Still, she nodded, agreeing with Chairman Delaney.
“Okay, Grandpa.”
Chairman Delaney sighed in relief. He quickly called Dr. Larson. The latter had been waiting outside.
Dr. Larson quickly appeared. He nodded lightly at Lariette, greeting her before he sat on the chair by the bed. He placed his briefcase on the floor.
“Miss Elsher, may I check your hands first?” asked Dr. Larson, his voice warm and comforting, “I need to remove the bandages.”
“Yes, you may.”
Despite feeling anxious, Chairman Delaney and Madeline didn’t fuss over Dr. Larson when the latter examined Lariette. He also asked her a few questions about her current condition.
In the end, Dr. Larson re-bandaged Lariette’s hands and feet. He brought his own set of first-aid kit.
“Miss Elsher only suffered from cuts,” was what Dr. Larson told Chairman Delaney after finished examining Lariette, “The wounds were treated and bandaged well.”
Dr. Larson continued speaking, saying how Lariette should get plenty of rest. Even though her wounds were not dire, going through such a frightening event might put stress on her.
“We’ll make sure she’ll rest well,” Chairman Delaney nodded a few times, pleased with the result.
“I’ll wait outside,” Dr. Larson picked up his briefcase while rising to his feet, “Once we’re back, I’ll prescribe some medicine.”
“Yes, yes. Thank you, Dr. Larson. Oh! My grandson-in-law is here!”
Chairman Delaney noticed Ruediger’s presence through the corner of his eye. Lariette and Madeline followed the direction of his gaze, seeing Ruediger approaching the door.
And…
He was not alone.
Blinking, Lariette stared at Declan and Rafael behind Ruediger. A question popped into her mind.
What were they doing here?
