Chapter 38: Cheers To Us
Jake arrived at Vanessa’s apartment just shy of midnight. The sound of his car pulling up made Vanessa glance at the clock with a smile. She was already in her silk robe, pouring herself a glass of wine when the knock came.
“Come in,” she called, a satisfied smirk tugging at her lips.
Jake stepped inside, looking impatient but pleased. “Well? How did it go?” he asked, closing the door behind him.
Vanessa’s grin widened as she gestured for him to sit. “Pour yourself a drink,” she said, swirling her glass dramatically. “You’ll want to savor this.”
Jake rolled his eyes but did as she said. “Quit stalling, Nessa,” he pressed. “What happened? Did you succeed?”
“Where should I start?” she asked, and he grinned.
“From the top. I want to know everything,” Jake said since it was obvious Vanessa had succeeded; otherwise, she wouldn’t be in such a good mood or even ask him over if she hadn’t.
Vanessa perched on the armrest of the couch, savoring his anticipation before diving into her story.
She started by explaining how she’d gotten Alex to help her inside, leaning on him more than necessary. “He was stiff as a board,” she said with a laugh. “The drug was working, but he was fighting it.”
Once they were in the bedroom, she said, Alex had collapsed onto the bed, making her anxious enough to call him.
“So, what did you do after the call?” Jake asked and Vanessa’s lips curled in a coy smile.
“Why don’t you take a guess?” she asked, winking at him.
Jake narrowed his eyes at her. “Don’t tell me you took what I said. You did it with him asleep?” he asked curiously, and Vanessa shrugged.
“That was what I intended….”
“Intended? Does that mean you didn’t do it? Oh, for fuck’s sake, Vanessa just spill it out. You’re frustrating me,” he said, and she giggled.
“After the call, I started undressing him,” Vanessa recounted, her voice lowering as if reliving the moment. “First his jacket, then his shirt. He was out cold—or at least I thought he was.”
As she described the scene, her expression shifted, becoming more animated. She explained how she’d reached into his pocket to remove his phone, only to find it slipping deeper instead of coming loose. Unbothered, she continued, assuming it didn’t matter.
“But then,” she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement, “I got to his pants. And just as I was about to… you know, take them all off—”
Jake leaned forward, his curiosity piqued as he cut in. “What? What happened?”
Vanessa’s smile faltered for a second, her irritation resurfacing. “That’s when he ‘woke up.’ The bastard wasn’t as out of it as I thought.”
Immediately, Jake frowned. “What did you say? He woke up?” he asked anxiously, and when Vanessa nodded, he whistled.
“What did you then do? Did he suspect anything? What was your explanation? Does that mean you didn’t succeed? Why did you call me over then…..”
“Just calm down and let me finish Jake,” Vanessa said, and Jake looked at her for a moment before nodding.
“Fine. So, did he suspect? Does he know what we tried to do?” he asked more calmly now.
Vanessa waved a dismissive hand. “No, no. He was confused, of course. He kept saying he couldn’t remember anything. I started crying, acting like I was devastated,” she said and grinned again.
“Crying? I don’t understand,” Jake said, confused.
“Well, I told him he’d forced himself on me.”
Jake let out a low whistle. “What? What did he do? Did he believe that? He must be a fool if he did….”
“What do you mean a fool? You wake up with just your briefs on with a lady crying next to you, knowing how much you had been horny while with her. Do you think you wouldn’t believe me?” she asked, irritated by his indirect insult.

Jake thought about it and nodded. “You’re right. I think I will. What did he do then?”
Vanessa laughed, her voice dripping with satisfaction. “He apologized. Over and over. Said he didn’t mean to. Begged me not to tell anyone, and when I just kept crying, saying I was ruined, he promised to ‘take responsibility,'” she said. Jake smiled, satisfied with the outcome even though it didn’t go exactly as planned.
“I’m glad we achieved that outcome thanks to your smart thinking,” Jake said, and Vanessa clinked her glass against Jake’s.
“I’d say he’s thoroughly trapped now.”
Jake leaned back on the couch, his grin matching hers. “You did good, Vanessa. Real good.”
“But,” Vanessa said, raising an eyebrow, “we’re not done yet, are we?”
“No, we’re not,” Jake confirmed, his tone turning serious. “The next part of the plan is critical.”
Vanessa’s brow furrowed. “You mean getting pregnant for real?”
“Exactly,” Jake said, nodding. “When Alex doesn’t ‘take responsibility’ at the end of the month, we’ll have proof to back up the story. A positive pregnancy test. And if they insist on a fresh one, it’ll still come back positive,” he said with a smirk.
Vanessa hesitated. “But what about a DNA test? What if they demand one after the baby’s born?”
Jake’s smile didn’t waver. “Don’t worry about that. I have it covered.”
Her gaze narrowed. “How?”
“Let’s just say I’ve got connections,” Jake said cryptically. “By the time they think of asking for a test, we’ll already have what we need. Alex won’t be able to back out.”
Vanessa’s smile returned, her confidence restored. She raised her glass in a mock toast. “To us,” she said. “And to bringing Alex to his knees.”
Jake clinked his glass against hers, the satisfaction of their shared scheming evident in his smirk.
“Cheers,” he said, the clinking sound echoing in the quiet apartment.
“Now, let’s go get you pregnant for real,” Jake said with a grin and Vanessa stood up, with a smile of her own.
“You’re so naughty. I’m sure that’s what has been on your mind all the while I was telling you what happened,” Vanessa said even as she followed Jake into her bedroom.
He laughed. “Of course. What else should I think when im with my smart girl?”
