Chapter 137: Impasse
On boarding the girls were given the high class seats at the front of the plane. Luckily, these seats came with ample leg room. Though, it’s not really like Hikari needed the extra space with her small frame. Three seats were lined up in each row, so the six of them took up two rows across from each other.

Hikari sat between Syndra and Ayase. Apparently, the group had played a game to decide who would sit next to the elf. Hikari was curious what game it was, but she didn’t ask. Either way, her two arms were grabbed, so the elf had no way of escaping, not that she wanted to.

Both Syndra and Ayase were wearing revealing clothes that accentuated their nice figures. Their beautiful chests were pressed up against Hikari’s sides, giving her a nice view of the valley between their twin peaks.

Ayase grinned at the elf and kissed her shoulder. “I’m so used to you wearing those robes that I didn’t even consider you could look like this.”

Hikari looked down at her own outfit which were clothes fit for the Summer. She wore a white tank top speckled with flowers, and on the bottom she had a cute little purple skirt that ended before her knees. Hikari’s delicate and fair legs were exposed almost entirely, ending in a pair of white sandles, and on top she wore a purple hat that matched her eyes—a small feather affixed to it.

The elf grinned. “I wanted to change into something like this. I figured that it would attract less attention.”

Syndra widened her eyes, her cute little fluffy ears twitching. “Before you looked like an elven cosplayer playing as a mage. Now you look like an elven cosplayer playing as a Summer beauty. Rather than attract less attention, you might end up as the whole show like this. I am surprised you wanted to change before the flight.”

“Well, you all changed too!”

It was just as Syndra said. When people started boarding the plane, they couldn’t help but stare at Hikari in her outfit, and the other girls were getting appreciative looks from men and women passing by. Some even stopped to say they loved their cosplay.

As this was a flight to Japan, a lot of Japanese people boarded to return home, so some of them asked if they were Japanese influencers.

When the flight finally took off from the runway, Syndra clasped tightly to Hikari’s hand. “I hate flying in airplanes!”

The startled kitten looked so cute that Hikari couldn’t resist rubbing her fluffy ears. She patted her lap, allowing the kitten to curl up and rest her head there. Syndra purred as flight grew higher.

“I haven’t been on a flight in thousands of years,” Ayase said. “The odd thing is that my ears aren’t popping at all. I don’t really understand it myself.”

Hikari noticed the same thing with herself and shrugged. “It probably has to do with the magic in our bodies. Maybe our ears are constantly pressurized by magic power or something?”

The witch nodded her head. “I feel good. I expected that I would be slowly drained of magic power here, but that’s not happening at all. I don’t really understand it. It makes a lot of the questions the scholars asked pointless.”

Hikari nodded and continued petting Syndra’s hair, a small smile playing over her face. “The truth is there is magic power in this universe. Only, it’s a very small amount of it. I can sense it, but it’s not enough to replenish any that you lose. Naturally, I’m supplementing you all.”

Ayase’s eyes widened. “Is that the warm feeling? I’ve been wondering why there was this small sensation surrounding me like a hug.”

“Exactly! Though, you aren’t losing much magic power by idling, but it’s good we’ve not used mana here to begin with. I don’t like to think what will happen if we use a bunch of spells here. Mizuko had already been using magic, but what happens when all of it dissipates into the atmosphere?” Hikari paused at her own question and smiled. “Though, thinking about it, the results could be fun and interesting. Imagine that everyone on Earth suddenly had the ability to use magic. What would the changes here look like? I’ve thought of planting a world tree here…”

“You can’t be serious. If you do that, people will definitely worship you forever. I don’t know if that would be a great idea, given your usual refusal to be worshiped.”

Hikari sighed. “I could plant it without anyone knowing, and then just observe the chaos from afar.”

Ayase giggled. “I thought you were supposed to be a goddess of order, but you’re a very bad girl.”

Hikari raised an eyebrow at the way Ayase emphasized ‘bad girl’. She thought back to her Despair personality. The dark elf that was no nestled inside of her filled her with alien memories, but one thing was for certain. It gave the elven goddess a unique perspective, and it allowed her to consider her own life on Earth.

There was a curiosity building within her about her old life. It was something that had always been present, but she never cared as much to learn before. If she did, she would’ve come to Earth a long time ago. The Despair memories had given her enough of a push to return here, but why was that? Were the memories pushing her to discover herself?

She could definitely remember much of her life on Earth. She knew that she was a baby once, and she knew that a foster parent had raised her and allowed her to live at a game store. The idea that Hikari would go back there made Hikari unsure how to feel. What would the woman who raised her think about her? She wondered if that woman had some idea of what she truly was.

Ayase clutched Hikari’s hand tightly. “You don’t need to worry about a thing.” The witch grinned and laughed. “I should be the one more worried about all of this. For me, it’s been nearly a thousand years since I’ve seen any of our classmates. Do you think they would recognize us? Haha, probably not.”

Hikari smiled and shrugged. “You never know. Sometimes people can pick up on the smallest of things. A name. A person. An aura. What is it that makes you yourself?”

Ayase frowned and pinched Hikari’s arm. “Don’t go getting philosophical on me. These kinds of questions are ultimately useless. What really matters is how your heart feels right here and now. If you’ve got guts, you better spill them.”

“I guess I’m just worried about what will happen when we get there. I’ve been hoping that my adoptive mother would not forget me. I think this was only a recent development.”

Ayase nodded thoughtfully. “In a sense, I have no one to return to, so I kind of envy you for this Hope that you have. I wonder if my mother is watching me right now, and I wonder what she thinks about me.”

Hikari marveled at the idea that Ayase had never forgotten her mother. It seemed like a foreign idea for mortals to forget the person that raised them, but Ayase was different. She’d lived a thousand years in another life with different parents. After all that time, she never once forgot the mother that truly cared for her, and she never gave up on her love for Hikari.

You’re the one that I really envy, Ayase.

Hikari checked inside of her inventory, searching through the list of names, and arriving at her goal. There it was. The elf couldn’t believe it. She’d found Ayase’s mother inside of her own domain. Moreover, the girl’s father was right under it.

Tear drops fell from Ayase’s eyes as if the wound was still fresh in her heart. “The only thing I wished was that she would see me be so happy. I wanted her to see me get married. You might find this dumb, but I searched for her. When I was reincarnated, I hoped to find a version of her that was brought to that world, and I also searched for you. Seeing as I found you, I had the thought that maybe…”

Hikari swallowed hard on Ayase’s words. She knew it deep within herself. She had the power to make Ayase’s wish come true. She looked back at the two little seeds. They seemed to glow in a vibrant white hue of happiness. Just their daughter talking about them was enough to make them feel even better. The elf was at a complete impasse with herself. Bringing them both back to life was within the confines of her abilities, but what would that do? What kind of chain reaction would that set off?

Ayase clasped both of her hands to Hikari’s cheeks. “You don’t need to do anything for my sake. You’ve already given me the greatest thing I’d hoped for.”

Hikari choked down her own feelings that started bubbling beneath the surface. She struggled to keep her eyes fixed to Ayase. Instead, she focused on the gentle purring kitten in her lap. What should I do, Syndra? What would anyone else do?
