Chapter 45: Middle School Snake Syndrome
“Master, what do you plan to do next? If you wish to go to that forest wouldn’t it be easier to fly ahead?”
Hikari patted her dragon. “What would happen if we failed the quest in that case?”
“Does a failed quest even matter? It’s just an adventurer’s guild.”
As the dragon snuggled up next to her master in the carriage, Hikari had an idea of what the girl wanted. Kurayami simply wanted to be alone with Hikari.
“Besides, that cat forced this quest on you. Why should you do anything that they say anyway?”
Hikari pet the dragon’s head. Her hand felt the base of Kurayami’s horn. It was a unique sensation, but the elf liked how it felt. The horn was hard but smooth.
“I understand your perspective. However, we’re almost there anyway. How about this…I won’t let things like this happen as much anymore. And when we get to the forest, we will spend some time together.”
Kurayami smiled and hugged Hikari’s arm. “Thank you, Master.”
After a moment, Kahleem climbed in the back, looking over the two girls. She looked far more relaxed than usual. Only her red eyes were visible, but they appeared clear and less sharp.
“Did Salazar say when he’d be back?”
Kahleem shrugged. “He’s left buying a few more things before we head out. There are things in this village that are treasured by the elves.”
“I see. Salazar is probably still angry about earlier. Speaking of him, how did you end up working for Salazar anyway?”
Kahleem’s looked at Hikari with sincerity. “I guess I can tell you some of it.”
She looked outside of the carriage towards the rising eastern sun. “Like Salazar, I came from Saladiin. My family is a clan that protected our kingdom directly. There’s a coming-of-age ritual, and I ended up failing.”
Kahleem continued. “I was lost inside of a deep and dark cave, but after traveling for a while, I came upon an oasis.”
“An oasis? Like the god you worship?”
“Hah, I wish it was, but no. I found myself somewhere very far from Saladiin. I don’t even know how it’s possible. I went from the desert to a tropical biome. The place was filled with fruits I’d never tasted before. I really did think it was the oasis at the time.”
There was a glint in her eyes as she recalled it. “There were beautiful creatures I’d never seen before. Birds with feathers that were green and blue. Turtles with the most gorgeous shells. The place was truly like a paradise.”
“If that’s the case, then why did you leave? Surely it would be easy for you to make a living anywhere.”
Kahleem chuckled dryly. “I felt that if I stayed in that place, I would be betraying my brothers and sisters in the oasis. It took me almost a year, but I made it back to the desert. After being gone that long, I couldn’t stay with my clan anymore. That was when I found out about Salazar. He had grown so much in size while I was gone, and it happened that he was hiring mercenaries at the time.”
“Hey, maybe Salazar will go to that paradise again? Where was it anyway?”
“That’s the craziest part about this whole experience. I hadn’t realistically traveled that far. Underground, I probably walked for about a day, but I ended up all the way in the west on a beach. When I got back to the desert, I tried to find that cave again. It was gone…All of it was gone. Ever since then, I have asked around, but I have never gotten an answer…” As if realizing something her eyes lit up and she grabbed Hikari’s hands. “You know a lot of things right? Have you traveled to many places?”
Hikari waved her arms and shook her head. “I don’t know much. I probably know less than you about this world. You’re more well-traveled than I am.”
Kahleem sighed and lowered her head. “Maybe it’s useless after all?”
Kurayami kicked Kahleem’s foot. “Stop being such a coward. If Master knows she will know. If Master doesn’t know she will figure it out.”
Hikari looked awkwardly at her dragon. The faith she placed in the elf was too high. If it was something related to light or healing magic, Hikari would probably know about it. At least, as long as it was something coming from the game. But, Hikari also believed that if there was a healing magic difference, she’d still be able to learn its principles.
Kahleem tentatively nodded. “Then Miss Hikari, do you know about a large blue serpent?”
“A blue serpent?”
“Yes, and it’s one that has a mucus membrane. I am not sure on the details of that part though. However, this is no normal monster. It’s huge and can talk!”
Hikari placed a hand on her chin. A huge snake that can talk? Wait! I have seen something like this before.

The elf remembered a monster from [Gensuba]. There was a slimy serpent. In terms of levels, they were when players had started getting to mid-game. The snakes could range anywhere from level 300-500. Hikari recalled that many players had actually tamed them. Some snake lovers in the community drove the developers to include some in a gacha event.
Snakes from that event were much higher leveled, but there was a cap. She remembered the highest level serpent from that event was level 900. Wasn’t there a player who always had that snake?
An image of annoyance popped into her head. Yes, there was a brat with a slimy serpent. She was one of the most chuuni people she had ever seen. The girl modeled her character after snakes. She was a beast person with a forked tongue. Hikari remembered that the girl had blue frills on her arms. The rest of her body was mostly human besides some scales on the sides of her neck and slit pupils.
What aggravated Hikari the most was how this girl would act. The elf had met her a few times, and every time, it was an embarrassing experience. The snake girl would roleplay, saying she was part of the Eastern Snake God Sect.
No matter what, she would keep up this act. Even if it came into serious settings. Well, it wasn’t that Hikari hated her, but going with her into dungeons was always a cringe inducing experience. Ah! It reminds me of my own dark times.
Hikari briefly remembered her middle school years when she stood out in the rain and swung an umbrella round. She pretended it was a staff and used it to repel the rain droplets, calling herself the true god that can dispel rain.
“Master, what’s wrong?” Kurayami asked and tentatively poked Hikari’s face.
The elf coughed into her fist. “It’s nothing! It just so happens that I might know about this monster…”
Kahleem widened her eyes in disbelief. “Really?”
“Seriously. Wait, you said that the cave was gone after you went back, right?”
“Yeah, is that some clue?”
Hikari shook her head, her eyes opening in astonishment. No, it’s impossible! A snake that talks, is slimy, and can use a form of spacial, magic?
The elf knew it could only be those snakes from the event. Moreover, all of these details were in line with what the elf remembered of that silly girl. She was always a trouble maker.
“Did the snake say anything in particular?” Hikari asked.
“‘Someone intrudes into my chambers…’And I believe the other thing was something about smelling it on me. Most likely it was referring to that slimy substance.”
Hikari felt a sudden pain in her chest. The first line was something all chuunis would say. You venture into their little larping cave, and then they chase you with sticks.
“Miss Hikari?”
“Master? Are you okay? Did something happen?” Kurayami looked around and used her sensing skills searching for a potential enemy.
But it was all useless, the enemy was only the emotional damage. Did that person also turn her pet into the same kind of species? Are they both stricken with the middle schooler disease?
However, it was strange. Why would the snake randomly appear somewhere and then hide the cave? Also, if it was really the same snake, was the master somewhere in this world, too? None if it really made sense. Yet, the elf hadn’t met anyone from the game since transferring over. Moreover, she hadn’t found things she would call remnants of modern society. There were oddities, but nothing that would signal to someone “hey, I am a reincarnation from Earth!”
Noticing that Kurayami and Kahleem seemed to both be worried, Hikari shook her head. “It might not be the same snake I know. However, if it is, I do know a way to lure it’s master out.”
“It’s master?”
Hikari didn’t get the chance to answer as Salazar climbed into the carriage. “What are you women talking about?”
Kahleem shook her head. “It’s nothing that should concern you.”
For some reason, Hikari felt that Kahleem and the snake master would probably get a long as two peas in a pod.
