Chapter 108: …Do You Still Want Lilith Nocturne?
The study was quiet again.

Not the cold, oppressive quiet from before. This was different.

This was the kind of quiet that settled in when a plan failed completely—when there was no one left to blame, no excuses left to make.

Mr. Grayson sat behind his desk, in the same spot where he’d once given orders, with full confidence, where he’d planned the downfall of the Nocturnes, piece by piece, through subtle infiltration and slow manipulation.

Now, all four pieces he had moved onto the board had crumbled.

Vincent lost a corporate partnership.

Darren nearly sparked a military response.

Thomas was humiliated by a girl half his age in the underworld.

And Lucas—his last card, the golden son—had lost not just a fight, but the illusion of control. He didn’t even know he’d been beaten until hours later.

It was a full sweep.

A complete, perfect defeat.

And the worst part?

The boy at the center of it all—Ethan Nocturne—hadn’t even broken a sweat.

Mr. Grayson stared down at the half-empty glass of scotch on the desk. His fingers circled the rim slowly, thinking.

They had underestimated him.

That much was clear.

This wasn’t just a boy adopted into power. This wasn’t some side project by Lilith. The Nocturne family revolved around him. Protected him. Cared for him. And even more than that—

They feared what he might become.

Mr. Grayson didn’t know why yet. But he intended to find out, as that could be an opening he could use to his advantage.

He leaned back in his chair, closing his eyes for a brief moment, trying to force the pressure in his temples to ease.

The plan had to change.

They couldn’t use charm or manipulation.

They couldn’t win through influence or slow control.

If he still wanted a path into the Nocturnes—if he still wanted a shot at Lilith—then he needed to change the story.

He needed to be the hero, and not just any hero, but someone that she could not ignore or brush off.

A sharp buzz broke the silence. His desk phone lit up.

Unknown number.

Mr. Grayson’s brow furrowed. He rarely got calls on this line—never from numbers he didn’t recognize.

He stared at the screen for a second longer, then picked it up.

“Grayson,” he said, voice even.

A few seconds of silence.

Then a voice came through.

Raspy. Low. Rough like gravel rubbing against iron.

“…Do you still want Lilith Nocturne?”

Mr. Grayson froze.

The question wasn’t a greeting. It wasn’t vague. It was too direct, and he didn’t know anyone with a voice like this.

“Who is this?” he asked slowly.

The voice didn’t change. “Answer the question.”

Grayson’s mind raced. Could it be someone from the Association? One of Lilith’s enemies? A setup?

Or someone from Lilith or one of her daughters’ sides who wants to use this to get definite proof?

But even then… curiosity flickered in his chest. A dangerous curiosity.

“Yes,” he said finally. “I do.”

Silence again.

Then the voice replied, “Good. I can give you a chance.”

Mr. Grayson sat forward slightly. “What kind of chance?”

“A way to earn her favor. Directly. Publicly.”

The words were slow and deliberate.

“You’ll save her son’s life. In front of everyone.”

Mr. Grayson’s hand tightened slightly on the receiver. “That sounds… convenient.”

“It will be during the college exams,” the voice continued, ignoring his tone. “A small ‘incident’ will happen. Ethan will be isolated. Overwhelmed. Near death.”

Grayson’s heart picked up.

“And you,” the voice said, “will arrive just in time. You’ll protect him. Pull him out. Bring him back safely.”

“…And Lilith will owe me,” Grayson murmured.

“She’ll see you as the man who saved her son,” the voice confirmed. “And the rest will follow naturally.”

Grayson narrowed his eyes. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Because I want to see her fall,” the voice said simply. “And the best way to ruin a throne… is to break the bloodline from the inside.”

There was a coldness to it. A blunt, unshaken hatred that even Grayson didn’t fully understand.

“You want me to manipulate her through Ethan.”

“No. I want you to get close. What happens next is up to you.”

Mr. Grayson exhaled slowly. “…And what do you want in return?”

There was a beat.

Then the voice replied, “I’ll send a list.”

“And if I say no?”

“Then I’ll find someone else.”

Click.

The line went dead.

Mr. Grayson stared at the phone in his hand for several seconds before slowly placing it back down.

Then the device vibrated once, and an encrypted message appeared on the screen.

No name.

Just a file attachment.

He opened it.

A list.

Names. Materials. Coordinates. Items he didn’t fully understand, but all were written in plain language. Simple, actionable tasks. Nothing impossible.

Grayson leaned back again.

His mind was already moving faster now. This was dangerous. Risky.

But… brilliant.

If he could pull it off, he wouldn’t just recover from this mess. He’d win everything.

Lilith’s attention.

A seat in her world.

And eventually… influence over Ethan.

That last part stirred something darker in him.

That boy had embarrassed his entire family.

But if he saved him, if he played the role right… Ethan might never even know.

He’d thank him.

Trust him.

And once that happened—

Grayson smiled.

A slow, calculating grin that hadn’t appeared in days.

Finally, a new path had opened.

A path through fire and lies.

But at the end of it?

He saw her face.

Lilith Nocturne.

And now… she wasn’t just a dream.

She was a target.

And this time, he wasn’t sending anyone else.

He’d go himself.

Even if it meant stepping into a trap.

Even if it meant playing hero.

Because once he held that boy’s life in his hands, the balance would shift.

And he had no intention of letting go.

Not until she looked at him.

Not until she thanked him.

Not until she saw him—not as a failure—but as the man who saved her world.

Even if he was the one who helped break it first.
