- Chapter 71 - 71 Lucas Didn't Show Up To Class
71: Lucas Didn’t Show Up To Class 71: Lucas Didn’t Show Up To Class He didn’t answer.
The car turned a corner automatically and slowed as the school came into view.
The parking lot was already filling up-students walking in groups, laughing, checking their phones, yawning into coffee cups.
Ethan tapped the dashboard, switching the car out of autopilot as it pulled into his usual spot.
He cut the engine.
Sat in silence.
And exhaled.
This wasn’t just another school day.
Not anymore.
He reached for his bag, slung it over one shoulder, and opened the door.
As he stepped out, a few heads turned.
Girls, mostly.
Some blinked.
Some smiled.
One or two whispered to their friends, stealing glances in his direction.
He kept walking.
Headphones in while his hands are in his pockets.
Face calm.
But inside?
He already felt the weight of the day pressing in.
Then-he felt it.
Two distinct energies are coming up fast on either side.
He didn’t need to turn his head to know who it was.
In perfect sync, two sets of arms looped through his-one on each side.
“Morning, Ethan~” Everly sang, flashing him a big, cheerful grin as she hugged his left arm.
“Good morning,” Evelyn said on his right, her voice softer but warm and her expression just as bright.
Ethan glanced between the two of them.
“You two look… suspiciously happy today.” They both giggled at the same time.
“Mom’s home!” Everly said.
“And she’s staying until we get into college,” Evelyn added quickly, her smile growing.

Ethan blinked.
“Wait-Elowen?
She’s back for real?” “Mmhm,” Everly nodded, leaning her head against his shoulder.
“She came back late last night.
And she’s not leaving again anytime soon.” Ethan’s expression softened.
“That’s great.
I know you’ve been waiting for that.” “We’re so happy,” Evelyn whispered, tightening her grip just a little.
He didn’t say anything right away.
He didn’t need to.
He just gave them both a look-calm and warm-and smiled.
A real one.
The twins didn’t miss it.
Evelyn’s cheeks turned a little pink.
Everly let out a small, happy hum.
And as they walked, arm in arm, more students noticed.
Some guys in front of the gates turned to stare.
One of them elbowed his friend.
Another whispered something under his breath.
A girl near the school entrance froze mid-step, her eyes bouncing between Ethan and the twins.
Her jaw dropped slightly before she quickly turned away, pretending she hadn’t seen anything.
Another group of girls shot the twins long, annoyed stares-like they couldn’t understand how they ended up clinging to someone like Ethan.
He wasn’t just the quiet adopted brother anymore.
He was someone they couldn’t take their eyes off of.
But Ethan?
He didn’t flinch.
Didn’t slow down.
He just kept walking with them, like this was the most natural thing in the world.
Because for him-it was.
“Everyone’s staring,” Everly said with a smirk, clearly enjoying it.
“Let them,” Evelyn added, eyes forward, calm as ever.
They passed through the gates and stepped onto the school grounds, heading toward the main building.
Inside the classrooms, things were different too.
Ethan noticed it as soon as they stepped into the hallway.
The noise dipped just slightly.
Conversations slowed.
A few students went quiet altogether as the trio walked by.
People weren’t just noticing them.
They were reacting.
Awe.
Curiosity.
Even fear.
Most of it was directed at Ethan.
Especially from the boys.
It made sense.
The news about his fight with Lucas had already spread.
Some people still didn’t believe it.
But those who saw it?
They remembered.
The calm way Ethan stood his ground.
The way Lucas lost control.
It is pretty much a social death scene, and for Lucas, who likes to be the center of attention, this is a major thing.
So when Lucas and his group didn’t show up, many understood why.
Some students whispered that he was planning to take revenge on Ethan, which many thought might happen, but not many believed that he would succeed.
Others said he transferred schools out of nowhere.
A few came up with wild stories-that he got scared and ran off, that he was hiding because he lost a fight.
As they walked into their classroom, all eyes turned their way.
A few students sitting in the back straightened up.
One of the popular girls in class wanted to strike up a conversation, but when she saw the twins, she just looked jealous and sat back down in her seat.
Mr.
Halden, who had been reviewing something on his tablet, looked up-and then looked down again, pretending not to notice the shift in atmosphere.
Ethan gently unhooked his arms from the twins as they reached their seats.
Everly slid into her spot with a smile.
Evelyn sat quietly, adjusting her notes with a smooth motion.
Ethan pulled out his chair and sat down, casually glancing around the room.
Most people looked away the moment their eyes met his.
The room had gone quiet again.
Too quiet.
He leaned back in his chair, sliding one hand into his hoodie pocket and resting his other elbow on the desk.
He didn’t say a word.
And yet-his presence filled the room.
A few more students slipped in as the final bell rang.
Still no sign of Lucas.
Or his crew.
Someone near the window whispered, “Guess he’s not coming back.” “Can you blame him?” someone else muttered back.
But none of the trio-Ethan, Evelyn, or Everly-reacted.
They weren’t interested in rumors.
Their focus was elsewhere.
Mr.
Halden cleared his throat and finally looked up.
“Alright, before we begin today’s lesson, here’s a quick reminder,” he said, tapping his tablet to project something on the screen behind him.
“College exams are just a few weeks away.
This means your final placement evaluations are coming up.
You’ll be tested not only on academics but on your superpower, the way you use your superpower, and how you react to dangerous situations.” A low ripple of chatter passed through the room.
Ethan’s gaze didn’t change, but his eyes sharpened just slightly.
He scanned the room.
“So make sure you’re prepared.
We’ll be rotating through mock exams and virtual drills with virtual beasts that will appear in the forbidden zone as it has been confirmed as the official location for the trials.” Ethan caught the small glance the teacher shot him right after he said that.
He didn’t react.
But he knew what it meant.
Everyone remembered what happened with Lucas.
That wasn’t going away anytime soon.
