Chapter 174: What it takes to place in the Yggdrasil Tournament
But with the Dimensional Tournament of Yggdrasil beginning soon, the Aluria Family might just be able to make a comeback—that is, assuming they’re able to place high enough in the Tournament Rankings, hopefully in the Top 100. If they’re able to accomplish that, then most of their political issues will be resolved.
However… with Amaris not eligible to participate and all her daughters too young to make any difference, she could only rely on those affiliated with her family. And to be honest, she didn’t feel the least bit assured with the candidates she currently had available to choose from.
There were several Beyond SSS-Rank Awakeners in the Aluria Royal Family, and there were even more SSS-Rank Awakeners. But of those SSS-Rank Awakeners, very few stood out among the crowd. None of them seemed like Top 100 material—possibly not even Top 200 material.
‘If only my daughters had been born hundreds of years earlier… If that were the case, then by now, they would have long since developed enough of their latent bloodlines to fight for a place in the Top 100…’
Amaris sighed under her breath while thinking of the unfortunate what ifs. Moreover, she also sighed at the whole ordeal involving her innocent eldest daughter.
As Succubi, it was best if they never fell in love.
Many years ago, Amaris made the mistake of catching feelings for a dashing male Incubus. However, as their species thrived on taking in exorbitant amounts of Yang, her Incubus husband just couldn’t keep up, and he unfortunately… died.
Some men suffer from dehydration, whereas others drown.
That man died from snu snu…
The only plus side to that whole predicament was that the male Incubus went out smiling. He sure was a happy dying man, even if his cheeks were sunken in.
Thousands of years later, Amaris finally decided to procreate and have some descendants of her own. In total, she went through nearly a dozen Incubus candidates until they succumbed to the embrace of death the same way her late husband had. But from all those happily dying men, three different variations of her pride and joy came into creation.
And right now, the eldest of those bundles of joy was going through a rough patch with her human… boyfriend…? Was he her boyfriend?
Deciding to ask straight up, she said, “Hey, honey, that Cassius is your boyfriend, isn’t he?”
“B-B…Boyfriend…??” Steam puffed out from the top of Grace’s head as she averted her eyes from her mother and began fidgeting with her hands. “…N-No… We aren’t dating… Why would you think that…?”
Amaris tilted her flawless head in confusion. ‘She did say that this boy saved her life just a moment before the guardians I set up could make a move, didn’t she? And then she told me that the boy recently vowed to find a cure for her… Haiz…’
The Succubus Queen felt her heart clench while thinking about the mysterious illness that ailed her eldest daughter—or, rather, the… curse…
It was primarily because of this curse that Amaris put so much emphasis on the Dimensional Tournament of Yggdrasil. Placing high in that Tournament would not only elevate their standing among the Seven Dimensions, but it would also make it far easier to acquire one of the Lesser Tears of Yggdrasil. The real deal, which would completely cure Grace, was something only the Gold Winner of the Tournament could obtain. But the residual essence of the genuine article—the Pseudo Tears of Yggdrasil—was more than capable of keeping Grace’s curse at bay until a more permanent solution could be found.
And to acquire one of these Pseudo Tears, the easiest way was to place within the Top 100 of the Dimensional Tournament of Yggdrasil…
Shaking her head, Amaris took her mind off that depressing subject and stared at her daughter.
Under the intense stare, Grace struggled to maintain eye contact. But when her mother softly commanded her not to look away, she once again found herself on the opposing end of that serious gaze.
“This boy—you know that it’ll never work out, don’t you?” Amaris asked in all seriousness. “The lifespan of even the strongest among the human race is nothing in comparison to our own, not to mention that this pretend boyfriend of yours is from the Trial Gate Floor. This also means that he’ll never be able to become strong enough to increase his lifespan or make a difference in the Dimensional Tournament of Yggdrasil.”
Exhaling sharply, she added, “It may be cruel what I’m about to say, but this is just the way of the world. That boy—his resolve to help you is admirable, and under any other circumstances, I would allow whatever you two are to continue, but unfortunately, that boy is weak. And in our society, weakness is a sin. His determination means nothing if he doesn’t have the power to back it up. Let alone winning the entire Tournament, that boy will not even be able to obtain a spot that’ll enable him to enter Yggdrasil for the Tournament.”
“The Tournament itself is open to all who feel themselves worthy enough to participate, but getting into the Heart of the Ascension Tower is another matter altogether. Even our family only has three spots, and that is on the better side.”
Grace bit her lip in frustration. She knew all of this already, but something… something inside her was telling her that if it were him, then he’d be able to do it. Her gut and her heart were telling her that he could do it.
She just had to make her mother understand.
She had to! There was no other option!
“But, Mother, Cassius… His power is able to—”
“That’s enough!” Amaris silenced her with a sharp shout. “We’ll not speak any more on this matter. My word is final, and for the next three months or until we obtain a Pseudo Tear of Yggdrasil, you shall be put under house arrest. You’re not allowed to leave the bounds of the palace anymore.”
