Chapter 210: Killing Thousands of Nightmare Triants
“Is this the secret ploy devised by the System…? Clever…”
[Teehee… (─‿‿─) ♡]
‘Again with the teehees,’ Cassius thought in exasperation. ‘Sometimes, I love this System, and sometimes I just want to, ya know? Bart Simpson Strang—’
[Ahh~ The System loves you, too, Dear Host~!]
[( ˘ ³˘)♥︎]
A vein bulged in Cassius’s forehead, forcing him to vent on the nearest Nightmare Treants.
*Thud, Thud, Thud!*
Massive trees fell in every direction, leaving many of the Nightmare Slayer Examination Participants in disbelief. Looking toward the source of this repeated occurrence, they were even more shocked to find that the one killing so many Treants and destroying the trees was… none other than the unknown hooded man who had been the last to appear in the Colosseum!
Christopher and Diana—who weren’t faring too well right now—were most surprised of all. While fending off the erratically lashing vines of the Nightmare Treants, their eyes always found their way back to the shadowy figure weaving in and out of black vines. That same figure cut down Treants like they were common everyday yard weeds, doing so without remorse or hesitation.
A few of the more cowardly among the Participants thought to rally behind the hooded figure and walk along the path he carved out for them. However, even with that hopeful notion pushing dozens of people toward Cassius, they quickly came to realize that fending for themselves was a far safer alternative. Not only was he moving incredibly fast and bouncing from one place to the next, but countless Nightmare Treants were also focused on him.
The total number of black vines crisscrossing through the skies—gunning for Cassius’s throat—amounted to tens of thousands!
It was insanity!
Christopher and Diana were quite proud of having taken down two or three of the Nightmare Treants, but they could only dream of comparing to the monster that was the 12th Princess. She had so far killed a little over 30 of the Treants, and for them, that was already ludicrous!
And then there was the handsome hooded figure…
Hundreds upon hundreds…
After more than 40% of the Trial Participants had fallen in battle, Cassius had already slain several hundred Nightmare Treants. And from the looks of things, he appeared to be becoming more efficient with every certain number of kills.
“Just what sort of freak is he…?” Christopher murmured to himself, feeling an awful amount of regret over how he had previously acted toward the freak in question.
Diana—who was covering his ass while he was lost in thought—let herself be pushed back by multiple black vines. Once she was less than a few inches away from the blonde-haired Christopher, she angrily shouted, “You better get your head out of the clouds, you idiot! Start fighting harder!!”
“O-Oh, yes!” Snapping out of it, Christopher wielded his longsword. He slashed at a few black vines trying to stab Diana in the back. Then, with a newfound level of focus, he placed his back against Diana’s. “You handle that side while I get this side!”
“Already on it, you idiot,” Diana spat back.
Emitting a dazzling green light from her two short daggers, her 5th Stage Apprentice Slayer power exploded outward.
Christopher revealed a small smirk before fixing his stance and encasing his longsword in a unique energy of his own. In front of him was an incoming lot of roughly fifty razor-sharp vines, all aiming to jam themselves up his bum and disembowel him.
“First one to die has to pay for the next round of drinks!” Christopher shouted, to which Diana replied, “Deal!”
SHING! SHING!
Blades clashed with the sharp vines on that front. Yet similar events were occurring all over the wide-open forest space that placed them in the middle of thousands of Nightmare Treants. Some had tried slipping through this encirclement, but every attempt ended in the near-instantaneous fatality of the one who tried.
To successfully make it through the Nightmare Treants, they would have to kill well over a thousand of them in a straight line. This meant they not only needed to bulldoze through a ridiculous number of Late-stage 1st Rank Nightmares, but they also had to fend off the joint attacks of countless more Treants.
Frankly, it was impossible.
And for this to be part of the Nightmare Slayer Examination Trial was just… straight-up crazy.
Many lost hope once they calmed their minds enough to survey their surroundings and confirm this common hypothesis. From their elders, they had learned that the Nightmare Slayer Examination Trials were always different from the ones that came prior, but they had all been told the same thing: the Trial would seem virtually impossible to accomplish.
If it wasn’t that way, then it was highly likely that the true Trial hadn’t even started…

For Christopher, Diana, and any other promising Slayers, this was indeed an impossible task. It was one where they couldn’t even make use of their brains; they could only fight.
Fight after fight, then more fighting… It was not only exhausting but made everyone feel hopeless. Despair began to settle in the hearts of everyone still alive and fighting. And in their despair—watching as hundreds of people just like them were brutalized—more than forty minutes had flown by unnoticed.
Yuna—who had been constantly thinking about the mysteries centered around a man she knew almost nothing about—just exceeded the 150 total kills mark. This astronomical number placed her at 2nd among all of the Participants.
Altogether, the Trial Participants—excluding Cassius—had a cumulative Nightmare Treant kill count of well over 3,000.
But even with such a number to serve as proof of their immense efforts, they had barely put a dent in the Nightmare Treant population. And because of mass panic, they weren’t able to focus on sweeping out the Treants in a singular direction. This meant they were still a long way from breaking through the tree monster encirclement.
Or, at least, that was what they believed while stuck in an endless cycle of desperate, mindless killings…
However, once someone opened their eyes to reality, everyone else quickly followed.
And what they saw—it was mind-boggling.
