Chapter 269: The Slayer Platoons
Even though he didn’t know much about the Nightmarescape or the Land of Beginnings, Cassius knew enough to understand that Yuna’s progression speed was insane.
The Vice Fortress Master, for example, was well into his 30s and yet only at the 2nd Stage, 2nd Class Slayer Rank. Furthermore, this was accomplished with his far above-average Slayer talent and many years actively defending the Mistalore Defense Nation against invading Nightmares.
And yet, in a meager couple of weeks, Yuna Mistalore advanced not just a single stage but two! Furthermore, to top it off, she was at least a fourth of the way through her current stage. This meant she wasn’t too far off from another breakthrough!
“It’s highly possible that within half a year or so, you’ll be knocking on the doors of the 2nd Class Slayer Rank,” Cassius said, finding amusement in how shy she became when being praised. “Have you thought about what sort of grand and noble Slayer Title you’ll have everyone in the Kingdom and Defense Nation call you by—”
“Jerk!” Yuna said with a punch, then added two more because three were better than one. “You really are no more than an incorrigible man.”
“Heh, thanks,” Cassius said, his nose haughtily upturned. “I do take pride in the level at which I’m able to reap—I mean, ignite the passion of others.”
He almost let it slip that he was using his conversations with the 12th Princess to farm the hell out of his Trolling System feature. The amount of AP rolling in only increased with every word that left his mouth and entered her ears.
Twas truly glorious!
Even now—as they spoke—Cassius was dumping more and more of his tens of thousands of AP into his Agility stat. It was essentially him passively becoming stronger!
— 30 minutes of ‘lively’ carriage travel later, Yuna practically kicked him out of the carriage and sent him on his way back toward his Platoon —
Cassius blew a flirtatious kiss toward the infuriated Yuna, only to really get kicked out of the carriage—by boot to his butt. She also shouted something about forcing him to lift the spell he’d supposedly placed on her. Moreover, she promised to do so no matter how many times she had to come back to him!
“Such a feisty woman she is,” he said, patting the dust off his pants and looking away from the receding carriage drawn by large monstrous horses. “And in the end, I wound up returning right back to this place.”
Filling the vision in front of him was a very large blackish-gray fort—one that contained within it various training grounds and every single ‘Suicide Platoon.’
If explained briefly, there were 100 Nightmare Slayer Platoons in the Mistalore Defense Nation. 1-39 were considered the newbie Platoons and typically consisted of Apprentice Rank Slayers, with 3rd Class Slayers being scarce, and 2nd Class Slayers nonexistent. These Platoons were all centered around the safest of the four Vanguard Fortresses—the West Fortress.
Slayer Platoons 50-89, on the other hand, were often referred to as the ‘Advanced Platoons’ and had only members in and above the 3rd Class Slayer Rank. Moreover, they had to be of at least the 3rd Stage of the Rank. There were only a few hundred Nightmare Slayers split across these Platoons.
As for Slayer Platoons 90-99, they were the ‘Veteran Platoons’ and had members only in the 2nd Class Slayer Rank. They numbered around 70 or so members total.
Then there was the 100th Slayer Platoon—the King Platoon—which changed its members based on the scores of the ‘Slayer Ranking Board.’
The 100th Slayer Platoon was made up of the Top 5 strongest Nightmare Slayers in the Mistalore Defense Nation. These Slayers were the best of the best, with even the four Fortress Masters being below them in strength and status. Their fame was naturally far higher as well.
But with them almost always being part of the ‘Exploration Team’ that explored and purified the ‘Endless Dark Fog,’ they rarely ever had the time to bask in the fame.
Slayer Platoons 40 through 49, however, were known as the Suicide Squads. These Platoons had Slayers ranging anywhere from the Apprentice Slayer Rank to the 2nd Class Slayer Rank. But even then, the 2nd Class Slayers in these Platoons were just as prone to death as the Apprentice Slayers.
These Platoons had the highest number of active members, but they also had by far the highest fatality rates. Yet, even with these statistics being common knowledge, up-and-coming Slayers were constantly signing up.
As the saying went: for wealth, man would do anything.
The people in this world were no different from those on Earth. They’d risk their lives if the pay was good enough.
“Look, Captain!” someone shouted from atop the fort walls. “That newbie has returned to EastWind Fort! He survived that ambush in the Boundless Gorge!”
“He what!?” An older man rushed to the ledge that a scruffy, armored man was pointing out over. “Well, I’ll be damned! That courageous brat actually survived! I heard something similar from the Fort Commander, but I never thought it’d actually turn out to be the truth!”
“Well, come on up, kid!” the older man shouted, a radiant grin plastered across his face. “Although I hadn’t thought you would make it back from a horde like that one, it’s good to see that you’re okay!”
In response to the boisterous words of the jubilant Captain of Platoon 42, Cassius merely nodded before entering through the ajar Fort Gates. He then ascended a flight of stairs that lined the inner fort walls. Before long, he was already standing in front of Platoon 42’s Captain and a few other miscellaneous members of the same Platoon. Members of Platoon 41 were also there.
This side of the Fort was watched over by these two Platoons, so their members were the only ones around.
“So you’re the one who tackled an entire horde of Rank 2 Nightmares, eh? I even heard you killed numerous Early Rank 3 Nightmares. Is that true!?”
“People talked of how you saved the lives of many Slayers of Platoon 42! That basically makes you a war hero!”

“He doesn’t appear all that impressive to me, though. He’s a bit scrawny, no meat on his bones.”
“You’re just fat!”
“Whadja say!?”
