Chapter 279: The Chamberlain Duke
“The one who did all this to you and me is somewhere within that encirclement of Nightwalkers,” Cassius said to the cat-girl clinging onto him for dear life. “Do you know why he’s over there? I can’t properly discern everything with the aura interference of those behemoths getting in the way.”
Opal further tightened her soft white tail around Cassius’s waist, only now realizing they had stopped moving. She looked up with watery eyes, clearly on the verge of tears.
“That was scary, wasn’t it?” Cassius asked, his expression softening. “I’m sorry that I moved so fast, but could you nod your head if you know why he’s over there?”
Opal lowered her head in deep thought, a scarlet blush beautifully painting her features.
After a couple of seconds, a light bulb flashed inside her mind. Her crystal-clear blue eyes sparkled as she stole Cassius’s gaze. She fervently nodded, performing the action so quickly that her head almost popped off.
Cassius chuckled. “No need to say anymore,” he said while softly petting her. “But unfortunately for us, I do not possess the necessary strength to safely take on those Rank 4 Nightwalkers and that William Chamberlain.”
Opal’s fluffy cat ears drooped.
Did this mean that perverted scum would be getting away with the things he did? What about her big sis? If William was allowed to live, then Yun Yun would be forced to… with that scum…
“Don’t worry,” Cassius said with a reassuring smile. “I only told you I couldn’t do it safely. I never said I wasn’t going to still do it anyway.”
“???”
Opal shook her head repeatedly, not allowing what he was proposing.
Nice people like him shouldn’t—
*Thwack*
A swift karate chop knocked the adorably kind cat-girl out cold. Cassius cradled her in his arms.
Looking down at her passionately displeased expression made his smile grow fonder. “You really are so much like your sister,” he whispered. “Then again, you aren’t nearly as tsundere as that dolt is. Ha…”
After a brief pause, Cassius’s smile returned to neutrality. An icy cold gleam passed through his piercing eyes as a shadowy energy pulsated off of him.
“Nyxvoldar, Raijin,” he said without looking back. “Take away this girl and keep her safe in EastWind Fort’s personal room. The room has a protective barrier around it, so she and you two should be fine until I return.”
Shadows swished around behind Cassius’s figure, and from those shadows formed the shapes of an assassin-type humanoid and a small dragon. Raijin, however, almost immediately started increasing in size. He only stopped growing once he became the size of an appropriate mount.
Before gently laying Opal on Raijin’s back, Cassius took one final look at her. Sympathy nearly surfaced, but before it could fully form, it was erased by a chilling sensation that pervaded his bones and insides.
“Time to go and die,” he said, turning toward the Goliaths wandering in the distance. Uncontrollable tremors emerged in his hands, causing them to tremble.
Emotionlessly glaring at his open hands, Cassius’s nerves steeled as he clenched them tight. “There is no room for weakness in Character Development,” he said coldly. “Being afraid of death is natural, but running away from it is unacceptable.”
FWIP!
He blurred forward, heading in the opposite direction that Nyxvoldar and Raijin were traveling in.
After a couple of moments, he found himself hovering over a thousand feet off the ground. Facing him at the same altitude was the creepy, spiraling-eyed head of a Rank 4 Nightwalker. It eerily tilted its head while staring at Cassius. A long, forked tongue fell out of its countless toothed mouth, with acidic drool ominously trickling down it.
“Well,” Cassius said, his smirk widening. “How about you and I get the party started?”
Just then, the massive Nightwalker’s sharp, tooth-filled mouth opened disproportionately. It didn’t stop opening until one side of its mouth could make a straight line to the other side.
A soul-shaking howl then followed, one that alerted every Nightwalker in a thousand-mile radius of Cassius’s presence.
“Now we’re talking,” Cassius said as his face and fist blurred forward so quickly that sound and light lagged behind. “Struggle with all your might! It’s no fun otherwise!”
The scene cut off with his atomic-powered fist preparing to make contact with a miasma-covered fist hundreds of times his size.
Zooming out, then moving through dimensions, the Land of Beginnings appeared. Zooming into a tiny part of a much vaster world, the Azure Archipelago came into view. Within a very large and luxurious mansion located inside one of the numerous Island Kingdoms, an old man with mixed black and gray hair shot open his eyes. Flames of fury shot out of them as blood leaked from his lips and ears.

The grating sound of teeth being gnashed further emphasized the old man’s rage. In his immense anger, he crushed his throne to bits, then flew through the walls of his mansion. In an instant, he arrived in a small, well-lit room that held more than a dozen shining crystals.
One of the crystals, however, was broken.
These crystals—they were Life Crystals, and each one represented a life. This meant that if a Life Crystal was connected to someone and that person perished, the crystal would crack before ultimately falling apart.
“My grandson…” The old man’s anger reached all-time highs as his heart bled red. “Whoever killed my grandson… Whoever dared kill him… YOU’RE DEAD!!!”
His fury brought his aura to new heights, with its raging power enveloping the entirety of the mansion as well as most of his expansive territory. Outside the Mistalore Capital’s western side, this man was akin to an Emperor. And, at that moment, nearly all of his subjects felt his oppressive aura. Their hearts shook and their complexions paled.
All feared the wrath of the Chamberlain Duke—one of the strongest Slayers in the Mistalore Kingdom.
And his wrath… It would surely arrive. Without a doubt, it would arrive.
But when it did… Well… May the God of Beginnings bless that poor bastard’s soul…
