Chapter 285: Raijin and Nyxvoldar
— Meanwhile, at a time roughly a few hours ago, in the Land of Beginnings, at the Chamberlain Duke’s Mansion —
CRACK—
A crystal sitting beside Charle’s crystal in the Life Crystal Hall cracked. Then, with a loud, violent explosion, it shattered. What was once a vibrantly glowing crystal grayed out, its broken shards now reflecting the extremely livid face of the Chamberlain Duke.
“I’LL KILL YOU!!!” he roared at the top of his lungs. “I’LL KILL EVERY ONE OF YOU!!! ARRGHH!!!”
It was said that after the shattering of his two eldest sons’ Life Crystals, the Chamberlain Duke rampaged through his territory and even beyond it. Many spread rumors that he had lost his mind. And to an extent, those rumors weren’t too far-fetched.
Nonetheless, once the Mistalore King became involved in this mess, the Chamberlain Duke finally had some sense knocked back into him.
A good punch never hurt anyone, someone wise once said… probably.
However, in a land far, far away, another punch was sent spiraling, and for a similar reason to boot.
“Stop trying to get into my room,” Cassius said while half-heartedly slapping and punching the Slayers huddled outside his door. “Just because you bunch are deprived of female interaction doesn’t mean you should be following the trail of a girl like perverts.”
“Ahh—!”
“Pl-Please don’t hit me!!”
“N-Not in the face—Gah!”
The Suicide Slayers were lucky that they hadn’t gone any further than curiously stalking his door, or else they’d be missing more than just a couple of teeth.
“Now, now,” Cassius said, his voice as cold as ice. “Get lost. And don’t bother trying to understand my Evomon. Also, it would be in your best interest to forget everything you saw today. If not…”
“!!!” “!!!” “!!!”
Just a sliver of the devilishly handsome man’s killing intent was enough to make their legs tremble. Their knees buckled, forcing them to stare down at their toes with shaky pupils.
None even so much as dared match the devil’s gaze.
“Does every single one of you understand what I’m trying to tell you?” asked Cassius, wearing an expression bereft of compassion.
The Nightmare Slayers furiously nodded, then skedaddled. Large beads of sweat flew off their pale faces as they retreated to their respective Platoon Quarters. Not even one of them dared to report this matter to their Platoon Captains, the Vice Fort Commander, or the Fort Commander. Doing so would only lead to them needing to explain why on God’s green earth they were waiting outside of Cadet Cassius’s room like dogs in heat.
In times like this—when faced with someone substantially stronger than oneself—it was best to simply keep quiet and suck up one’s grievances.
Though, in the hearts of many, they couldn’t—for the life of them—comprehend how a new Nightmare Slayer had become powerful enough to pressure all of them. Such a massive incline in strength—what had brought it about? Was it his time in the Boundless Gorge?
Trapped for weeks in a cursed place like that… the Suicide Slayers assumed that could do magical things to someone as long as they were capable of surviving.
— Back in Cassius’s room —
He had just creaked open the door to his room when, from the corner of his eye, a shadowy blade arm cut through the air. Crackling blackish-yellow electricity lagged behind the blade arm’s advance, leaving the isolated space a conflagration of dazzling elements.
“Ho?” Cassius mused.
Lifting two fingers, he effortlessly caught the blade’s lethally sharp edges. “You’re doing well to protect Opal, I see,” he said with a satisfied smile. “That attack just now likely could’ve killed a weaker 2nd Class Slayer. I see now that all those Rank-up shards weren’t a waste.”
Only now realizing who had entered the room, Nyxvoldar’s eyes widened in alarm. He immediately ceased his attack and hit the ground with a thud. Entering a devout kneeling stance, he appeared extremely regretful, nervous even.
Cassius cracked a small chuckle as he lifted Nyxvoldar with his telekinesis. He then patted him on the shoulder before walking ahead. After passing a short corner wall, he was welcomed with the sight of his tiny, simple room. Sitting toward the far side of the bed in a frightful manner was the meek Opal—a girl whose beauty had no right being so immaculate.
As for Raijin—who was also supposed to be keeping a vigilant watch over the adorable cat-girl…
“…Raijin,” Cassius said to the miniature dragon sleeping upside down in a corner, with its long body leaning up against the very same corner. “You lazy… Haiz…”

Seeing as his dragon was still peacefully immersed in the world of dreams, Cassius slapped out with the palm of his right hand. Raijin—quick as ever—instantly shot his eyes open and swerved out of the way. He then transitioned into a defensive stance, ready to beat up whoever dared slip past his extremely vigilant watch—
‘Master…!? Oh, no…’
Raijin’s confidently sinuous expression drastically changed as he slithered over to his master and bowed in utmost forgiveness.
Veins bulged all over Cassius’s face as his smile turned crooked, eerily friendly.
Yet, after a pause and a deep breath, he shook his head and turned away from Raijin. “Stop being a bum,” he said while already slowly walking toward Opal. “We both know you don’t require sleep. Be more like Nyx; he’s much more industrious.”
Nyxvoldar wore a proud, almost smug look upon hearing his master’s kind words. Raijin, on the other hand, was left to sulk and cast hateful glares at the haughty bastard beside him.
‘You told me you’d warn me beforehand if Master returned, just like I was planning to do for you during your nap!’ Raijin seemed to think. ‘You backstabbing bastard!!’
Nyxvoldar’s lips curled up in amusement as he gloated in the dragon’s direction.
‘Why, you…!!’
If not for Master’s presence and orders, Raijin would be having Nyx meat for dinner!
Meanwhile, on Cassius and Opal’s side, both seemed ignorant of the growing feud between dragon and monster.
“Have you been well while I was away?” Cassius asked, slight concern flashing in his irises. “I know I’ve been gone a bit longer than expected, but—”
Just then, a soft feminine body collided with his. Opal Mistalore’s body.
“???”
