Chapter 294: Class Change Quest, Soul Sources
“For everyone here, it has been but mere minutes…”
Cassius was unable to properly describe how he was feeling upon learning of that information. But somewhere deep inside him, there lay… regret.
However, in the path of a Character Developer, regret was not an option.
“I should move on…” Cassius said while honing his sight on a particular skull-shaped island stranded at sea. “I’ve nearly prepared myself enough to account for anything that may occur during the Nexus Event. Yet, there is one more thing I must do…”
He glanced at the purple and blue illusory screen floating beside him, one that determined his next course of action.
{[Class Change Quest (??? Rank)]}
—[The destined Quest which will permit the Host to acquire a Class of his very own. The Class could end up being worse than trash, or it could be a Class so extraordinary that even the most powerful beings in the world could only look on in envy.]
[Would you like to accept the Quest and be transported to the Class Change Dimension right now?] – [Y/N]
Cassius clicked yes, then he emotionlessly watched as parts of his body faded upward. In mere moments, not a single piece of him was left on Earth.
He was gone and would remain so for a period of time that was yet to be known.
— Meanwhile, inside an extremely large moving birdhouse-like structure stilted atop two chicken legs that extended upward for hundreds of thousands of miles —
— Netherworld – Location: Unknown —
“A Young Soul Eater has died?” a voice asked, its tone both uncaring and sickly sounding. “Why is that any concern of mine? Even Lord Soul Eaters have died without you informing me.”
“Soul Emperor Salar, sire, the report that returned with this particular Young Soul Eater is not your usual case,” said a pale-faced man kneeling below a bone-decorated cage dangling above a green pit of lava. “This Young Soul Eater was one of the ones that was sent out to ‘that’ Dimension. It was part of the Mission focused on understanding that peculiar Dimension.”
“Understand that Dimension? A mission?” Soul Emperor Salar asked in bewilderment. “Was it that random nonsense I conjured up a few hundred thousand years ago when I was bored?”
With a bit of exasperation, the kneeling man answered, “Yes, sire… It’s that ‘nonsense’ you used to allocate a fourth of our forces toward accomplishing. Nonsense that is still ongoing, even today…”
“There’s no need to get so touchy, Morgol,” Soul Emperor Salar said with a yawn. “I’ll figure out how to ease your worries sometime or another. Perhaps I’ll talk with the lead members of that Mission to make myself recall why I created it in the first place.”
‘Sometime!?’ Morgol thought. ‘For you, that could mean hundreds of thousands, possibly even millions of years from now!’
Although the Primary Royal Advisor—Morgol—was more than a little annoyed with his Majesty, he concealed it well. For too many years to count, he had been serving by Salar’s side; he was used to his shenanigans.
“Anyway, Morgol,” said Soul Emperor Salar. “What about this Young Soul Eater’s death makes it stand out from the rest? Did one of the other Soul Eater Emperors make a move or something?”
“No, sire, nothing as extreme as that,” Morgol said with a hurried voice, sweat dripping from his brows. “If this involved one of the other Soul Emperors, then I would’ve already called for a state of emergency!”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Soul Emperor Salar said. “Those bastards are faring no better than me, so I guess there would be no possible way for them to directly interfere in that Dimension.”
The Soul Emperor briefly looked down at the bone-covered cage that bound him before returning his attention to his most trusted Royal Advisor.
Narrowing his lethargic eyes, he asked, “So, how about it? You ever going to get to the point that brought you here to me?”
“Yes, sire…” Morgol muttered while shaking his head. “The truth is that the Young Soul Eater I mentioned died not by another Soul Eater.”
“So?” Soul Emperor Salar asked. “I heard that there were numerous powerful beings in that Dimension. It’s no surprise that one of them would be capable of killing a Soul Eater—”
“That Soul Eater’s Origin Source is gone,” Morgol said seriously. “It didn’t return to the Origin Source Retrieval Area after the Young Soul Eater died. This means that—”
“The Soul Eater was permanently killed,” Soul Emperor Salar said as he nearly leapt through the unbreakable bars that trapped him. “For that to be possible… Well, it shouldn’t be! Quickly, Morgol, tell me everything you know about this event! I want to know exactly how an Immortal being like us is capable of permanently dying!”
“Yes, sire…”
Soul Eaters at first glance weren’t considered to be a forever-living organism; however, that was merely what the lower Soul Eaters and residents of the Netherworld believed. In actuality, every Soul Eater—upon dying—would have something called an ‘Origin Source’ bring their core existence back to the tether point.

The tether point for all Soul Eaters was the exact same place—the Origin Source Retrieval Area.
The Origin Source Retrieval Area was a large greenish-blue ocean located in the very middle of the Netherworld. The Origin Sources of dead Soul Eaters would swim around in this mystically-colored ocean, aimlessly wandering.
However, if one were to fish out an Origin Source from the Origin Source Retrieval Area—the Origin Sea—they could take it and convert its nature to one’s own. In a way, this was essentially having a neutral gray entity pick a side—your side—and become whatever color you were.
The Soul Emperors each had their own ‘color’ that they used to make Origin Sources convert to their side.
Yet, the Origin Sources had a special quality to them that made the faction war between the Soul Emperors perpetually ensue. A never-ending war. One that no longer possessed the same spark or appeal that it once had.
With the passing of countless years, the Soul Emperors—both old and new—became bored of it all. What was once a blood-pumping battle for supremacy over a greater number of Origin Sources became nothing more than an idle pastime.
As for ending this Soul War, that was impossible. The special quality of the Origin Sources wouldn’t allow it.
