Chapter 393: May and Cassius
“W-Who are you!?” May questioned, squinting as she tried to make out the appearance of the shadowy figure sitting on a chair beside her bed. “Have… Have you come to kill me…?”
“Kill you?” The shadowy figure chuckled as he moved out of the darkness, shedding his ungodly facial features to the faint beams of moonlight dripping into the room. “My dear, if I wanted to kill you, then you’d already be dead.”
The aura he passively emitted held back a level of killing intent that threatened to devour May whole. However, before fright could bubble up inside her, Cassius cracked a joke, saying, “What with the defenseless, chick-like way you sleep, taking you out for good would’ve been too easy, haha.”
‘He’s… He’s actually laughing right now…?’ May thought to herself with an estranged expression, though she couldn’t stop herself from staring at his every minute facial movement for as long as she could. “He’s pretty…”
Hearing this, Cassius’s smirk widened. “Say, girl, aren’t you going to ask me who I am? Did your parents never teach you about stranger danger?”
May shook her head but avoided the touchy subject of her parents by saying, “I already know who you are, though.”
“You do?”
Cassius’s amusement grew.
May nodded. “I’ve seen you in a dream once,” she said as she lowered her head, struggling to meet his intense stare. “I lived an entire lifetime, one that took many unexpected turns. But… even after becoming the strongest and most influential in the Kingdom, I still found myself in the same strut that I’m in right now… I just… I just wished it all would end.”
Gathering the courage to look up, May continued, “But then you appeared. And everything in the dream started to break apart after that, sending me back to… reality.”
She had no idea why she was telling this strangely attractive man all this, but for some reason unbeknownst to her, she felt like she could confide in him what she’d never even dare tell her family.
“Ho?” Cassius’s brow arched as he mumbled to himself, “So it’s true then; her ability… Perhaps then she’ll really be able to help me alter fate…”
“What was that, Sir Cassius?” asked May.
“Nothing, nothing,” replied Cassius, helplessly smiling. “Also, you can drop the honorifics. Just Cassius is fine.”
“Oh…” A warm smile blessed May’s delicate features as she held her hands over her heart. “Okay then, Cassi… Cassius.”
Once again, she did something that was totally unlike her. If it were anyone else she was interacting with, she’d politely refuse and continue using honorifics.
Not to mention if they were a regular Grand Slayer!
“What’s got you so lost in thought, dove?” Cassius inquired while leaning his chin against his hand in a casual yet charming manner. “You know what, you don’t need to answer that. Just tell me one thing—”
“Would you like to run away with me?”
*Whooosh~*
Cool midnight air blew in from May’s bedroom window, sending her long silky black hair into disarray. The scar she considered hideous was shown to the world, emitting an ever-so-faint golden glow that sparkled under the faint moonlight seeping in.
Then her thoughts began to spiral as she doubted her hearing. There was no way that in any universe, someone like Grand Slayer Cassius would ask her something as ludicrous as that. It simply made no sens—
“Well?”
And yet…
“Do you require some time to think it over?”
Cassius just kept on talking, giving May a sense of hope that she didn’t know she needed this badly.
That was when it fell.
*Drop*
A tear. A single crystalline teardrop that rippled across the wooden floor.
“Oh… Did I say something wrong again?” Cassius awkwardly scratched his neck, flashing an apologetic look her way. “If you’d like, then you can just forget I ever offered you such a thing. In fact, we can forget this ever happened if that’s what you—”

“No!” May interrupted, her emotions surging far higher than normal. “That’s not what I… Not what I want…!”
“Then what?” Cassius asked seriously. “What is it that you want, dove?”
“I…” May froze up, the question so simple yet so difficult to answer. “I just… I just want to live a life like everyone else… B-But… But I can’t… I know I can’t…”
With a nasty scar like hers, who would be willing to take her in?
What Grand Slayer Cassius proposed just now was surely said in jest… A mere joke…
No one would want someone like her by their side…
Cassius smiled kindly.
Rising off his chair, he approached her and knelt down on one knee beside her bed. One of his large hands pushed her bangs up, revealing the entirety of the ‘hideous’ scar that those in the Castle had been raving about since he arrived.
“Geez,” he said, startling her into realizing that his face was too close to her own. “I can’t believe this is what you’re so worried about. For the Protagonist to actually be so blind to true beauty… Well, I guess it fits the part, haha.”
May had no clue what this man was talking about, but his smile… it was enough to send her into cardiac arrest…
Averting her gaze, a scarlet blush formed for the first time since they met. Her fingers fiddled with one another as she frequently glanced in his direction, seemingly attempting to understand what was happening right now.
“You truly are a weirdo,” Cassius chuckled in a light-hearted manner as he pulled away from her, appreciating the teary-eyed, gerbil-like expression she was making.
“A-A weirdo…?”
May looked so sad now, with imaginary ears drooping dramatically.
Cassius ruffled her soft hair. “The good kind of weirdo, dove,” he laughed. “But on a side note, have you considered my offer? I won’t force you to come with me, but I also won’t lie and say that I don’t need you.”
“Need… me…?”
That might just be the first time she’s ever heard those words spoken to her.
Cassius gave a few more head pats, doubling down by saying, “I need you more than you can imagine. After all, in all of existence, you’re likely the only one who can help me with this. You’re special.”
